This. If you need any indication of how much people hate change...just check the statuses after FB makes a change. People go nuts! People want what they're used to. The way FB made it simple was looping them in young and bright (college students). They became the evangelists of FB then spreading to the mainstream.
Until everyone is on Google, nobody's going to Google - Even though I find it to be a superior product...I find myself using FB because that's where the people I care about are.
The point is, they do good and they do bad. If you sum up any person, corporation, group, ect. by just their failures/screw-up then nobody is worth a damn. If that site gets made, or exists, then add the good. Like you said, the MD player had it's good and it had it's bad.
Same with me. Same with the parent. Same with Sony.
That's true...didn't think of it that way. I suppose if a person had a website with their screw-ups, that person could take it as a personal attack or look at it objectively and say "there's a pattern to my screw-ups, perhaps when I'm faced with X situation, my response shouldn't be Y because it never works out for me". Same with Sony.
The Betamax and Mini-disc, I wouldn't necessarily call screw-ups. In fact, I'd say those were good things...they innovated and it never stuck (of course, it could be a screw-up if you consider lack of proper marketing as such) but they took a risk for the better and it never panned out. Root-kits, removing the other OS feature, suing GeoHot...those are in a different realm. It's like they went from no follow-through, to too much follow-though.
This has been an interesting exercise. Thanks for not taking my post the wrong way, I was worried that others would think I was just trying to be an ass.
Someone really needs to consolidate all the bad stuff YOU have done onto one web page. That way next time someone questions my adversity to all things you, I can just point at it.
I'm not trying to troll or whatever...this is a thinking exercise. Think about how much bad that you've done in your life where forgiveness was given. Sure, the scale my be smaller...but the badness is there. I'm not a Sony fan by any means...and I'm very upset about this, but think for a moment of how much bad you've done in your life and how people still give you a chance. In reality...none of us are really worth a damn.
I don't code for a living (with the exception of the occasional batch script to automate certain tasks) -- but I maintain that if I didn't need the money, I'd do my job for free. I love it.
...and THAT is why I can relate to your post. I've taken staycations and after a few days of doing hobbyist things that I'd been neglecting, found that I get bored REALLY easily.
Maybe once I reach the golden years (currently 29) -- I'll have found more things that I find as interesting hobbys, but until then...I'll just keep making my office a better place, one server/computer at a time.
I didn't RTFA, but the summary sounds like it could end Apple's App store. At which point do you draw the line between cell phone and computer? Internet service and phone service? I mean, they're not REALLY all that different anymore.
Apple will care because it's one more feature that helps sells a competitors product/hardware. If I was in the market for new phone/carrier, Apple would want me to buy the iPhone AND use iTunes for music...not just using iTunes for music.
If easy music management is something that I would like on my phone, then the iPhone would be the only choice (other music phones aren't nearly as intuitive about putting music on the phone).
I disagree. The staff of the hospital should be trained to be able to treat patients WITHOUT computers. Just like accountants, they need to be able to balance the books without the use of software if something happens.
The only reason a hospital shouldn't be treating patients is if something happens at the hospital (disease outbreak/quarantine, hospital is out of order due to explosion/terrorism/etc.) "Computers are down" SHOULD never be an acceptable excuse to NOT treat patients.
I think this car is neat-o burrito in concept, but in reality...all that's going to happen is that Volvo is going to get sued all to hell when the system fails and a collision occurs. Calling the car "collision proof" is just a bad idea since we live in a society that tries to avoid accountability at all costs (excluding lawyer fees).
I don't think there is a slashdot reader who would willingly choose Comcast over anything other than dial-up or abstinence. Most Comcast users just don't have any other choice. THAT is the problem...
Yeah, but what if there were poison police out searching front yards for poisoned candy and these hypothetical police found the poisoned candy on your yard...is it illegal that the poisoned candy was there?
THAT is the question here...
But with all of the delays of Vista they could have made it more stable before they released it. I think that's the problem with Microsoft is that they release everything before it's ready.
I, personally, am an OS X user simply because I fix Windows machines all day, and don't want to go home and look at Windows. I do have XP SP3 on my MBP (boot camp/parallels) and have no issue with SP3
My problems with Vista have been minimal. The fact that it took 10 minutes to move even a small file from one location to the next was my only complaint at first. After SP1, it's been much better.
I agree with a lot of what you say...given time, they'll fix more things making it more stable...but they definitely should have known about A LOT of the bugs before it was released.
The more notices they sent out, the more it pads their numbers. If they only send out 10 notices, then how can they convince the legislators to back up their failing business model. If they sent out 10,000 notices in a matter of months, then the downloading music thing seems way more dangerous to the music industry.
It's a numbers game so they can lobby the higher-ups and get laws passed in their favor.
In other words, all Microsoft has to do is open a hardware division of PCs they build that run Windows and they instantly have the moral high ground on more or less everything?
I doubt anyone would agree with that, but if that's not what you're saying, then I can't understand how what you are saying would make any sense. If Microsoft opened up a hardware division of PCs that they build to run Windows AND made Windows incompatible with ANY other computer but their own branded computer...then I would agree.
I would definitely be more willing to purchase music if it was $.10/song, sorta like I did with allofmp3.com before they got shut down. The problem is; that isn't going to happen. Never, ever will that happen. iTunes is far too successful with their $.99/song and $9.99/album. Until people stop purchasing music at a buck per song, it'll never make it to $.10 a song.
I don't know how I feel about this. It could be good, but at the same time, it could just be more fear mongering. I don't watch the news, it depresses me. All they show is bad news. Being from the DC area, I really don't want to have to have the same bad news that I avoid, flashed in my face while I'm driving down the road. I know people do bad things...I don't need to be constantly reminded of that.
Microsoft has a monopoly by consumer choice at this point. Don't get me wrong, this comment is sponsored in part by Apple, Inc., but we can't even give alternative options away. Linux is growing, but it's still not "there", and Mozilla is gaining ground also.
If OS X was made for x86 (without jumping through hoops to make it happen) then you could say that Microsoft had competition. Until someone decides to step up and market an OS (Apple markets their computers), people are just going to keep using what they know.
Anatomically Strange Dinosaur Vacuumed Up Food
I was just reminiscing about a girl that I once dated. Replace "dinosaur" with "girl" and you've hit the nail on the head.

A corporation's screw-ups are just a collection of personal screw-ups.

It's ok, it balances out since laughter is the best medicine!

No. Then the foot wouldn't be self-cleaning, now would it?!
