Why does wikipedia need so much money? Isn’t most of the work done by unpaid people? I get there are servers and power etc, but they could have donated use of AWS. If they had free servers they would have to constantly be running a fund raising campaign.
He is not a private businessman. Tesla is a publicly trade company, which comes with rules. He shouldnt have done an IPO to raise money if he wanted to be a private busniessman.
Not were I live, but most jurisdictions dont have the same laws. Where i am at, stop signs are yeild signs and stop lights are stop signs for cyclists. Its written into state law. Its called an Idaho Stop, see here https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wik...
It isn’t nannyland when your behavior has the risk of injuring an uninvolved party. Almost certainly the actual regulation wont be as vague as the article, but the determination of overkill depends on what they actual mean by “use”.
I ride a lot. I find that many drivers dont understand the actual traffic laws as they pertain to bikes on the road. Granted there are differences between jurisdictions.
I hope they are researching and planning for large capacity storage solutions. They are a couple intriguing ones that could be tried. Personally i like hydro storage because it can be done with all existing tech (two reservoirs, pipe, pumps, generators). These already exist but it would be cool to see them on large scale to see if it is practical on a huge scale.
I watch a TED talk by the head of googles driverless car project. He said in the talk that you cant partially automate a car for exactly this reason. Has to be all or nothing. Google new this years ago. See here https://www.ted.com/talks/chri...
The way to keep markets regular is to have punishments as deterents for unwanted behavior.
Citizens of various jurisdictions and socio-ecomomic classes will be punished by Apple forfeiting $16B too, you have just made value judgments about who its ok to punish for this and who it isn’t.
I get that, but Ireland was complicit in the deal. Their punishment, get $16 Billion. I just think the money should go somewhere else so both sides in the illegal deal are punished currently, not just by the los of future jobs. For example, make Apple estimate where the sales came from in the EU and give proportional payments to those jurisdictions.
How does making apple pay “back” taxes to Ireland punish Ireland for making an illegal tax agreement with Apple? Not that I agree with the ruling, but shouldn’t the money go to EU coffers or charity? This just sends a message to countries to cut whatever deal you want, if you get caught the worst that happens is you get the money anyway.
I dont live where I have to worry about those kind of storms.
Serious question. How often do poeple call 911? Or is it just a fear of needing it? I am 40 and have never called 911 for an emergency at my house as an adult or child. Am I just an outlier?
I just dont feel like it is warranted for almost 500/year.
When I lived in South America (years ago), there were extra costs to call a cell phone from a land line. Not sure it would be a good idea, but the only reason telemarketing works is because the economics are there to support it. Want to stop it, change one of the inputs in the equation.
Just because a government institution is providing help doesn’t mean there arent market forces at play.
No markets are actually free, I use it as a short hand for the idea that maximizing people’s choices tends to provide better results. Instead of me telling someone what they need to improve their lives, let them decide.
The study was looking at international poverty, not pimps. A better discussion might be should we give abused wmen cash to escape the situations they are in.
I didn’t say there was a problem, you are obviously free to do what you want. I wouldn’t even say that sending food is bad in any way. Maybe it isn’t the best way to maximize improvement in their lives. However, maybe that isn’t what people are going for.
I agree dealing with adicts is a different kind of problem, the study appears to be focused on international poverty. Maybe they aren’t comparable topics.
I also agree there are places where putting cash out there might not be the best idea, but warlords can just take the food, water, cows etc. too.
General question is what is the point of charity. Everyone can have thier own answer, I would just like mine to provide the maximum benefit to improve lives/minimize suffering.
Isn't this one of the basic ideas behind free markets. The invisible hand at work. Why should we assume that what someone from a third world country needs is a cow. I think avoiding cash is based on people's general tendency to want to control others. Don't want them to do something with their charity that they don't approve of with the money.
*wouldn’t

If the bird flu goes airborne we could be in trouble.

Or listen to music. Hard to tell what they mean by use in the article.

This is about life insurance policies not health care policies. Many people carry life policies outside of work.
You are opting in when you select them as your provider and sign the contract.

I do have young kids and they know how to use the mobile phones in the house.
You still have a land line.

I didn’t attach any morality to my post, just observation on behavior. However, you just seem to have admitted to the point I was making.

It isn’t even a different news outlet that was linked to. Both the same cnbc story. The original /. story is here https://developers.slashdot.or...
