It's the only answer. Form them into at lease 3 grous, O/S, desktop apps, content and make them 3 completely separate companies with clear rules and guidelines as to how they can interact.

It's good for the industry as other technology will have a chance to flurish, it's not really bad for M$ (it never hurt standard oil) or their share holders as they start with a huge lead over all their competators.

This is the only solution that will solve the problem, which is that M$ can and does use it's two monopolies to support each other and drive competition out of the market place.

The firecracker (CM17A) is not the same thing as the CM11A! It uses a protocol that depends on toggling the wires such as DTR. The CM11A uses a serial protocol where you send and recieve bytes from it. Most of the software for Linux such as heyu, x10d, ... do not currently work with the CM17A. There are early versions of programs that do work (eg. bottle rocket) but they are still very new.

This has been available for a while now. The "freebee" kit is a good bargain but watch out, you only get one lamp module and will want to buy more. The good news is that X10 is really reasonably priced and they always throw in free stuff. Be warned though that the firecracker controller is nothing more than a simple remote for X10 devices, it does not include most of the features of the more complex controllers, including builtin macros, being able to query devices, etc.

There is a couple of packages for linux that control the firecracker. You can find links at freshmeat. I've tried this one and it works ok.

Ok, i'll give you a factor of 10, the rest of the machines had local drives for compilers and object files. I think that this is also offset by the fact that the Sun is a heavily used multi-user machine and the others were entirely stand-alone dedictated to the build.

  8. I'll take the Sun anyday on The root of all eBay's troubles · · Score: 1

I work for a software company and did time as build captain for a while on our product. I was amazed at the difference in speed between various systems. The product is a fair size with a mix of C and Java and here are the relative speeds of a build on the various machines. (this was over a year ago and from memory :)

    - nt on a 200 mh intel 128MB standalone - 140 minutes
    - nt on a 300 mh alpha 256MB standalone - 130 minutes
    - Unix on some sort of AIX ~40 minutes
    - Sun Ultra with 2 160 mh CPUs 500 MB - 50 some odd users developers pounding on it, over 400 processes - 6 minutes

One major point in the Sun machine's favour was that the code was on local file systems, the rest of the machines had to go through a 100 mb ethernet to get it.

It was unbelieveable the difference in speed. Next look at the absolute pain it is trying to set up automated builds on an nt machine, not to mention the fact that both the nt machines would be dead half the time when you try to launch the builds. Microsoft has nothing to brag about.

Think about it, if Yahoo, a company that really has no product at all, can hit the $200 mark, why not RedHat. Heres why:

    1) They've already had pretty good success selling a product they also give away.
    2) They are synonymous with Linux and Linux is the current darling of the trade press.
    3) People are looking for another Yahoo, Amazon or Ebay and will jump on it.
    4) The Linux community will buy it because it gives us a real chance to own a piece of the pie and put our money behind something we believe in.

It doesn't matter that products like Apache are better than ours. If some one creates a better product we just bundle our inferior one with the next upgrade that they are forced to install. We know most people are lazy and will not bother to download and install a better product if one comes with the system."
