poor code commenting; I am a proponent of well written code. If code is too complicated or hard to understand such that is needs commenting, I say re-write it. Of course there are exceptions. A good ol' fashion code review process could fix this. And I am not talking about a heavy weight CMMI process here.. Simply print out the damn code and hand it to a seasoned developer who owns a red pen.
You are soooo wrong. I deal with code every day that is well written but uncommented and therefore unmaintainable and in my mind it should be thrown way. To say that code that is well written, does not need comments, is basically saying that you should be able to understand evething from the variable and function names. This may work if the code is so simple and self contained such that every thing is obvious from looking at a single source file. In the real world, especially the Object orientented world, this is simply not the case.
The fruits of the labour of professional programmers is the code they write, it should be clean, tidy and commented, otherwise it is indistinguishable from the hacks of amatures.
I'm not exactly sure of the name but there used to be a site called adcritic that hosted commercials. Now I know that everybody is proprietary about their stuff, but isn't the purpose of a commercial to get itself infront of as many eyeballs as possible? Youtube certainly has problems with copyright issues, but I have to wonder, does maintaining some sort of ownership for your work always have to mean scraping a few pennies from everyone that views it? Or is is possible to let people enjoy what you''ve done with the understanding that you made it, and still own it.
Pretty much all implementations of Linux follow the same layout,/bin,/etc,... Yes it's different from windows and yes there are some slight variations, but once you learn the concepts and discover that ascii configuration files are vastly superior to binary registries you will find that it is much easier to deal with. Most distributions also provide a set of simple and easy to use gui interfaces for configuration that make everything accessible to those who do not like to deal with ascii files. windows on the otherhand is a nasty complex beast that tries to hide any advanced configuration in layers of of ui and non-intutitive organization.
The bottom line is that it boils down to what you know, and whether you can be bothered to learn a different system.
It seems that the problem here is that they were brought down by the spammer's huge number of bots running on compromised machines. Why has no one tackled this problem? It seems to me that this should be the responsibility of the ISP's. I'm no expert but I believe that if someone reports to an ISP that a particlular IP address is running a bot, that it should be a simple process for the ISP to do some tests to see if that is true by checking the nature of the traffic coming out of the machine. If they decide that the machine has been compromised, they should shut down it's connection and redirect port 80 requests to a web page explaining to the owner that their machine has be compromised and how to fix it.
This does not seem to me to be a difficult technical problem and it is in everyone's interest to get the compromised machines off the net.
But to believe that one lawyer in Iowa is going to bring them down, when the full weight of the U.S. Department of Justice couldn't do it, and the E.U. is still trying to do it, is wishful thinking.
Actually if i remember correctly the DOJ did bring them down, had them up against the wall and could have done anything they wanted. Then the administration changed and they were let off.
Yes microsoft's success stems entirely from how well they have managed the monopoly that IBM granted them. Gates has proved to be very good at monopoly.
Well he has many several billions more than he could ever possibly spend. So what is the next best thing, leave it in his own name to be doled out so that he will always be remembered. Gates clearly wants to be a Rockefeller, this is his way of doing it.
I found it quite interesting. Not surprising but interesting. I'm not sure why you would consider this flamebait. Unless you just happen to not like microsoft being shown in a bad light. Get used to it, they are evil.
Yes exactly, the SciFi channel is the right place for Firefly, not fox. Firefly on SciFi would be huge and get them lots of extra interest for other shows.
If anyone thinks that Mono will allow applications that were written on windows to the windows implementation of.net will somehow run seemlessly under linux, think again..net is largely a scripting front end for native windows C++ dlls. Yes there are some implemenations of some of the.net libraries for mono but there is no way that 90% of the code written for.net will ever work under linux. Even applicatons written specifically for mono, like paperboy or beagle are shakey at best.
I suppose mono is interesting if you think the.net framework is useful, but if you want to get/write/use cross platform applications, say away from propietary M$ technology.
Strange that Bill Gates didn't make it.

I have it on good authority that he does not in fact exist. As as evil corporation Microsoft decided early on that having a whiny nerd as a leader would help make them seem harmless. The guy that plays Bill Gates is actually a Second City alumn from Toronto.
As a Canadian living and working in the States, I wish the Canadian government would have done more to keep skilled citizens rather than attracting skilled immigrants. Unfortunately it is really just too easy to max out in the Canadian market place and the only option is to move south.
Exactly, I wish I had mod points to mod you up. Each new generation of Microsoft operating system is suppose to fix the problems of the past, but each new generation continues to have them. The reason of course is that they simply can't throw the old crap away because they want backwards compatibility. M$ should really take a lesson from Apple when they switched to OS X. Toss the old code base and start new with a tried and true Unix kernel. Provide an emulation environment if you have to but toss it all out and go with what is known to work.
Every Maxtor drive that I've bought in the last few years has died. Now buying Seagate due to their 5 year warrentee, raid 1ing them and will see what happens.

firefox seems to consistently hang on the engadget site. I think it is related to the flash ads.
Anyone else see this?
Not to mention all the extra take while the thing bluescreens.

Sadly the ogg stream for Radio2 has been broken for a very long time.
Isn't Vista already virtual
I've heard good things about zfs, event that apple may adopt it, does any one know how it compares to ext4?
Google Earth next please!

Back up your take. Cringely claims to have actual sources, do you?

They don't have 401(k)'s you insensitive clod. They have RRSP's (hence the reason that they are homeless).
After all they don't call it windows for nothing.

The reduction is do to the very effective CANSPAM legislation (snicker).
