  1. Re:Perhaps ... on Company Uses DMCA To Take Down Second-Hand Software · · Score: 1

I remember reading about this a year or so ago, and Vernor had bought the software from an architectural company which was going out of business (first sale from Autodesk to Architectural firm here and here. However, I think part of what Autodesk is bitching about is that it was a subscription upgrade (upgrades are free for software on subscription), so that it was (in their lawyers' eyes) a "free" copy, tied to the original version purchased. But first sale? Of course. The architects payed good money to get next year's version free, Autodesk provided it to them (at a one-time cost without limitation on how long the next copy can be used), and it was resold. If anything, Vernor should not be held responsible for the resale- the no-longer-existent architectural firm should be. Of course, corporations don't have family members or estates to fleece after they are gone. People do.

If the enemy decides to attack after seeing a robot, let the enemy get ambushed by the Marine fireteam around the corner. Read about the shit that happens when we send Marines into fortified houses. Since this was StrongWebmail's contest, they make the rules. Even if the rules prevent a common method of hacking from taking place. What about my mother, if she were to buy one of these PCs... How would she know which one to download? "I bought a computer with Microsoft Windows, I see that Microsoft Internet Explorer is on the list, so this must be the choice" would be her logic. And people buying a PC expect it to function out of the box... not to spend the next hour configuring it. At least with the current Windows, we only need to spend about 10 minutes answering questions. Have a user on Dial-Up need to download a browser... I bet the vast majority of the time they would rather have had IE installed. The people who care what browser is used have the ability to install their choice; those that don't care will use whatever is available. And let's see the EU try to tackle all the MS apps which require IE to function... how is that explained to the user? "You didn't want IE, so you obviously didn't really want to run these applications".

So, this was probably a hit from the heuristics of the program- a similar signature. Hell, if I was writing malicious software, and I needed a way to crack weak passwords, would I worry about "licensing" or using open source software?
