  1. Gravity Does Matter on Medicines Lose Effectiveness In Space · · Score: 2

Radiation and other such environmental factor certainly would affect the "shelf life" and effectiveness of all molecular compounds., so in this case packaging and storage would have to be controlled. Apart from these concerns the way molecules travel through the GI tract, the blood stream , the blood brain barrier and in fact all cells is most likely affected by gravity, so that micro gravity certainly would cause these factors to be different and likely produce unpredictable results. It should also be noted that drug metabolism and cell signaling pathways are also likely affected by microgravity and increased CO2 levels.

The simple answer is that we just don't know because the data set is very limited. The real solution would be to do more research in these environments because it is just as likely that while negative effects may be observed positive beneficial results are just as likely and may lead to a new and fundamentally different understanding of drug and cellular function.

I used to use a program called ACD sketch I see its still around http://www.freechemsketch.com/ its was fun to play with for molecular modeling.FTA I kinda had to chuckle at the accounting reference, I am a chemist and that is how I see chemistry as "electron accounting". In my experience as a tutor students need to be shown how spreadsheets can be used to interpolate data for everything from balancing equations to plotting curves for kinetics, spectroscopy, pH titration ect. and even for keeping notes formally scribbled on paper towels.."shudder as my former profs heads spin"

This argument relies on two assumptions:

The RFID technology= what is available to Joe average corp. i.e the chips are likely to have a higher power output

That sensors are not located virtually everywhere.

But before we get out the tinfoil hats it would be interesting to see the specs on the chips.

I am also confused...I live in Mobile AL what is MTA? Multiple Tax Assessment?

It is true that you pay different rates if you purchase goods outside the Mobile incorporation limits, such as Tillman;s corner where sales taxes are 6% versus 9% in Mobile Corp limits, to make it even more confusing, there is a restaurant and hotel tax @ I think 12%. This is the real reason for the attempted annexation of communities in western Mobile county that are indeed gerrymandered to provide the greatest tax income while denying the the goods and services that would come with annexation. I am perfectly willing to be educated but I do not think that there are different rates per zip code but will certainly agree there are different rates at the county versus city limit lines and the goofy hotel/restaurant thing. But hey we do have some of the lowest property taxes in the country the downside is you do have to actually live here:). I can also buy things from Newgegg on a regular basis tax free versus the alternatives Lest Buy and Sukit City @ 9% a pop.

I just wonder if there is some sort of kick back or mutual money changing going on? IMO this smells of management getting large bonuses.

Firstly your points are spot on. The unfortunate truth is when I walk into a room filled with management types I am usually the smartest person in the room when it comes to tech and where it could led to real change and future cost avoidance and profitability. This may be redundant but most management I know of take the path that leads to largest cost savings bonuses at the end of the year (based on an already inflated budget) this leads to "strategic" planning that at best has a 3 month "visionary" window and new cars, boats, stock options, condos etc. for the management team. Leading to division or company sale to other corporations due to non profitability. The management team is then out-sourced with huge severance packages and the cycle begins anew. I have seen this happen 4 times in my company. The company manages to survive because fortunately we provide product that people would rather not do with out toilet paper, soda bottles, aluminium cans and clean drinking water. That being said no one is management is going to be visionary enough to tackle an infrastructure shift away from Windose. It is beyond the 3 month visionary window and certainly counter productive to the annual cost savings bonus. Even though 5 years from now an infrastructure shift would led to real growth and profitability. In this case the needs of the one do far out weigh the needs of the many. ---stepping off soap box...

  11. Re:cheating vs. really wanting to learn on Cheating Via the Internet at College · · Score: 3, Insightful

I am now about 20+ years from college and I am currently in a position where I hire the current crop of college graduates. In my experience the internet has created a "fast food" mentality for knowledge. In my career, hiring the average to above average student has always been more beneficial than the candidate with the golden scroll (4.0 GPA, published papers etc.), inferring that the average to above average student really wanted to learn and for the most part has better people skills. I think the issue here is that for the most part cheating is probably about the same as it always has been ~10% I would guess, maybe higher However, the ability to deliver poor quality work has increased dramatically. It is generally accepted that the more processes that are involved in learning, auditory, visual, tactile etc. the better the retention of the learning gained-->knowledge The ability to cut and paste information versus having to create note cards, handwritten papers or carefully thought out documents itself retards the learning process. This coupled with the fact that there is a pervasive undercurrent in American society that states "It's OK to fail" will lead to a further lowering of standards. It is occurring in corporate America today where it is more important to deliver charts, reports and graphs than it is to do the actual work necessary to improve the product and or the processes involved, in effect cheating. The sad thing is this type of behavior is rewarded at least until the company closes its doors in the face of real competition from the global market.
