No. They will just arrest you when you stick your neck out and speak up. If everyone's a criminal, selective prosecution against your political enemies becomes easy (whether they be the enemies of the RIAA or the Republicrats).

I was driving home from work today when KQED aired The California Report. They had a segment on E-Voting. See link above for audio stream.

    E-Voting

In the November election, nearly a third of California voters will cast their ballot on a touch screen voting machine. And virtually every vote cast in California will be counted electronically, even in those counties using punch card ballots. County officials often praise the machines. But electronic voting activists warn e-voting technology can't be trusted.

The report was fairly critical, but balanced.

While I do think that the defecit it somehting that needs to be taken care of, I don't think this method will work. A family with that kind of income usually will have a mortgage and at least a car or school loan to pay off.. hundreds of thousands of dollars.

US Consumer debt rose to $1.98 trillion in October 2003 - this number includes credit cards and car loan debt, but excludes mortgages. The average family has about $18700 in this kind of debt. Taking credit card debt alone, the average family has $12000 in debt.

Perhaps that would make a better comparison?

I agree and disagree. Yes, its a money racket. Yes, you'll enjoy the freedoms of being off campus. However, I highly recommend you spend at least a year or two on campus. Its a lot easier to meet people in the dorms. Socially, it provides a much richer experience. Also, its nice to be able to roll out of bed and walk two blocks to your class instead of dealing with traffic and parking. YMMV.

There is nothing to prevent those abuses, except that absentee ballots are typically a small percentage of the votes. Even if you buy 100% of the absentee ballots, it often won't change the outcome of the election. The margin of victory is often larger than the number of absentee ballots outstanding. (Florida and New Mexico not withstanding)

This is why it is important that our primary voting method (in-person polling) remains a secret ballot.

Do not abuse absentee ballots. Let them be used by those out of the country, away at college, or too sick to go to their local polling station.

The following year, the cars came with airbags.
