This is not the first time that writers have been accused of creating codes in their books. Let's assume that this is true, just for the sake of consideration. Given that assumption... what knowledge is being "hidden" now by authors that will come to light in the future, hidden now for fear of ostracization or somesuch?
Uhm... okay. So please demonstrate how else they could do it without calling out the company and product by name?
"The next product version of the Operating System that the government agencies run, hereafter referred to in this document as Company M, product to be referred to as Product V?"
XP's only natural upgrade path is Vista. To say that they are not upgrading is to explicitly stop purchases or installs of Vista.
This isn't singling out a company or product. It is an IT department simply stating, in a governmental bureaucratic setting, that they are not confident in the upgrade-ability of the software.
Sorry, but I'm glad that it is stripped down. Consider that your web traffic is flowing from your box to their server farm, going out to make the HTTP request, and then displaying it to you from the servers.
I wouldn't want a full-featured browser in Eve, else it contribute heavily to the lag as people browse heavy sites while mining/trading/whatever.
You're right. You mastered walking on birth, and simply lost the 35mm projectors vids your parents took?
Please. Amazing? It took you YEARS to master walking, and that is with a LOT of brain activity and non-automatic compensation training caused by your mistakes (falls, trips, tumbles). Yet people are stumped why this robot can't figure it out. How well could it walk in a month if given learning capability?
I thought most stations were chains that were owned by the recording labels anyway. No, I'm serious. People joke/gripe about that being true, but I was sure that this was the reason behind 'Hit' stations and 'Top 40' stations having to stick to specific song lists, certain play rates, etc. If they aren't owned outright by the labels, they are certainly acting like they have very tight contractual agreements.
So 'taxing' the stations they own/have in their pocket would go counter to their business agreements, yes? The stations would rebel (those that aren't legally obligated or owned).
The basis of the game seems to come from that movie/book, yes. It is about a man penetrating a guarded, dangerous area (the Zone) in order to reach a wish-giving room. This is the main plot point of both the movie and the game.
From IMDB: "Near a gray and unnamed city is the Zone, an alien place guarded by barbed wire and soldiers. Over his wife's numerous objections, a man rises in the dead of night: he's a stalker, one of a handful who have the mental gifts (and who risk imprisonment) to lead people into the Zone to the Room, a place where one's secret hopes come true. That night, he takes two people into the Zone: a popular writer who is burned out, cynical, and questioning his genius; and a quiet scientist more concerned about his knapsack than the journey. In the deserted Zone, the approach to the Room must be indirect. As they draw near, the rules seem to change and the stalker faces a crisis."
Spoiler alert: The game has you working your way to the Nuclear Power Plant of Chernobyl, which houses a psionic item called the Wishgranter. The ending of the game is based on what you achieve and how you make your way.
I like it. I wish I could watch the movie.
Begin the Revolution. Revolt. We are going to dump the tea in the harbor and make them understand exactly what we think of their government without the will of the people. Spread the word to everyone you know.
Someone please explain where we can get on the new boats. This country has become everything that it stood against, everything that it was formed to oppose. The rich and the religious now completely govern without the mandate of the simple majority. Show me the New World.
Mod me down, please. I am thinking more and more that I want to be seen as someone who doesn't "go with the flow" of Slashdot.
Recommend you read the TurnItIn site before you run off with this opinion. As has been stated by students required to use the service, THEY are the submitters to the site, and yes, they have to click through a EULA when registering.
Wrong. I was in an AV company for a while, and this is like the Oscars to them. Everything rides on their reputation, and this rating (along with The Pundits Choice Awards: Garner reports) can make or break a small company trying to break into corporate clients. Their sales people now face a HUGE uphill battle that they may never surmount, even if they make the VB100 next test phase.
You must be looking at a different poll than the one that appears on their Vista launch story page. I was just there, and out of three choices ('Yes, immediately.', 'Eventually, but no rush.', and 'I dont use Windows') given, there are only ~12,500 votes total. The answers are at 6%, 78% and 16%, respectively.
I don't care *why* they chose to put it in there. They have, now twice, admitted that this is being copied from prior offerings on the market... and they are patenting it! I'd even go so far as to say patenting it illegally! They are knowingly breaking the rules of the patent submission process by submitting a patent to which they have proof of prior art without even having the excuse of ignorance on their side! They've done the plantiff's lawyer's job for them!
Hey Schroeder, don't try to be a smart ass. I did extensive research before I wrote my article and the last thing I want is some nobody to tell me that I am wrong.
Just STFU already!

This in response to a lengthy comment posted with plenty of meat to it as a counterpoint. This is the author's way of defending his article?
This should be filed under "Stick-Your-Tongue-Out-And-Scream-Until-The-Others -Stop-Talking" department.
Slashdot is a tabloid. You haven't caught on to that yet? How naive are you, again?;)
They get paid for their ads, and they drive clicks/views to those pages, just like every other drivel site. Only thing is, sometimes there is actual news on here.
It is quite obvious. They post the stories, and don't even comment on them. Hell, I bet that they don't even read the comments!
All of the platforms are going to have (or do have) problems. 360 has its overheating and supply issues. Microsoft rushed it to market like a madman, and has been playing catch-up since. They released how many bug patches the first few months? Has anyone heard anything about how many games are slated for Wii? Seems like every game commercial or trailer I see says "Coming to PC, XBox360 and PS3." or some subset of those three. Hardly ever is Wii mentioned.
My guess is that the PS3 will sell fine, just like the 360 is doing, and as the Wii will. The hype alone is driving the drool value for most console gamers up, and let's face it: in the American crowd, drool value is driven by marketing, which rarely has any realistic connection to the engineering or manufacturing departments. How long have we put up with "trailers" that are CGI animations, not actual game-play, or are heavily post-production doctored for venues like E3? Oh, and E3 alone has become the bane of the industry itself, many would say. It used to be about games and innovation. Now it is about marketing droids driving interest, mailing lists so they can spam you, and click-through ads. They'll do everything in their power to grab the gamer's attention, because some idiot released that gaming is the next largest industry after movies, so all of the droids came running.
Don't be fooled. For every "outspoken" gamer activist with an opinion, there are 10-20 gamers who are not die hard Slashdotters, don't give a rat's ass about sites like Gamespot, and they buy their games at Walmart or Target (American chain stores) instead of dedicated gamer stores. That segment of the market is much more powerful than the 5% that are ranting or bitching here or there about this or that. That segment is the mindless drone that is swayed by meatless marketing driving the market right now.
Sorry, pal, but the PS3 really has earned it's bad news.
This is compared against the "good news" of the other consoles? As a relatively disconnected gamer who is intentionally keeping away from the hype wars that the current generation of consoles is generating, haven't every one of them had bad news?
Xbox 360: Overheating. Rumors of catching fire? Tons of bug patches in the first few months? This does not lend me to say "Wow, very stable and something I'd want to buy for my child's room."
Wii/Revolution: The ridiculous name change fiasco aside, has anyone even heard if it will step up and just play DVDs? If so, have they announced which HD-DVD format they are using? Also, in comparison, I haven't heard squat on how many games are slated for this platform at all.
PS3: Overpriced. Late. Hardware issues? Maybe, but compared to the other two, it doesn't seem any worse.
Honestly? In regards to the money thing, most gamers might pay for it if it is to truly take the place of a gaming computer, without the constant updates, copy protection eating your media drives, malware, etc, etc, etc. And, I am betting that many gamers are waiting on the PS3 for two major reasons: More games, and proven track record with the PS and PS2.
Oh, you'll get flamed. This is Slashdot, the last bastion of trolling on the net!*
The point people are trying to make is this: The files "exist", but not in the way you seem to understand them "existing". The files depict the form of the character's body, likely painted in flesh tones. This makes it so that changing your character's armor to "short sleeve" style shows lower and upper arms correctly. The way the game is programmed is 'realistic', in the idea that removing the upper armor meshes will reveal the character body form with nothing on it.
Now, the argument that you are seeing is people disagreeing that this game is "providing pornography", as asserted by the ESRB. By default, Oblivion shows the 'base' female torso as wearing a bikini. This "pornographic image on the CD" you are defending is actually a player going into the files on their harddrive and hacking out that bikini top. You can see this yourself if you own the game.
Don't confuse the situation here just because some of the trolling commentary on the subject is just that, trolling. The Fact of the Matter is that the ESRB is forcing a game company to reclassify a game rating (which will definately hurt their sales) because the players are playing the game in a way that was not intended by the designers.
Given this information, and endangering this post as being seen as a troll: I recommend that you get the facts for yourself before taking sides on any issue. Doing so is simply responsible parenting. I am sure in your young years, had your parents made decisions based on misinformation, that you would demand they get the whole story?
I see. So it's a numbers game? When the US gets up to 62 killed dissidents, then we will be allowed to speak as the person you are replying to has?
Killing people for political reasons is no worse than stripping them of all of their freedoms, I don't care who they are. Killing one makes your country just as guilty of the crime as a country that kills 100.

What about the Conflicker worm? Possible host/source in that DC?
What if this is actually, say, that they found the host/source of the April 1 worm we all laughed at two days ago?
Uhm... okay. So please demonstrate how else they could do it without calling out the company and product by name?

Metal Gear Solid just looks freakin awesome on the PS3 that it almost made me cry when I saw the demo videos.
