You speak the truth! At least with MS you get statements like "Internet Explorer [X] coming soon: Improved security, better protection against phishing". This kind of statement makes you feel much better than "We found a crapload of bugs and now we're trying to build a new release to fix them all." I for one value feeling good about my software rather than knowing that the developers are actually aware of and working on removing exploits/vulnerabilities.
Remember, software should make you feel safe and secure, even if it isn't =) . Microsoft has sure nailed that.
As a student who is paying his own way through school, I do not see why my college should decide for me what I do and do not have access to (in terms of gaming in particular). Obviously the legal implications of file sharing networks justify blocking p2p traffic, but my school (and many others) see fit to block all internet gaming.
I assume you are an adult who has graduated from school at some level. Let me tell you that I as a student share your sentiment as I look around and see many of my friends addicted to games like World of Warcraft which they play through proxy servers. They neglect work and fail classes. And you can call them kids all you like but they are legally adults and they are paying the school for their education opportunities, not the other way around! I do think that if the parents are paying for the education, they should monitor their child's grades and if he fails out tough luck, he's on his own.
At 20 years old I agree, I'm still a kid =) . But you know what? I see nothing wrong with relaxing as a single young adult by playing games every now and then. How is this even taxing on a school's servers? Many games still have netcode optimized for 56K! Why should my school tell me what I can and cannot do in my free time? I am paying my school for its reputation as an academic institution, not as a parental unit.
I agree. Not that the games they picked aren't good choices, but CS really opened the door to computer gaming for non-geeks. So many of my friends who were strictly console got into Counter-Strike and subsequently play computer games to this day. From my point of view, it really changed the way people look at computers as a platform for easily accessible and innovative entertainment.
Good points. However, I still do not believe that government scientists should be put doing the research on this. Consider this: with federal scientists, there is an opportunity for our government to get their policies implemented by manipulating scientific reports so that they can appear to be the "saviors of the world". It may seem a little far-fetched, but the concept of limited government is a tried and true way of thinking. Since when has Research been one of the branches of our government?
Certainly if global warming poses an economic threat that private research has shown, policies should be enacted. But this information should not come from within the government itself, it's too risky because it opens up the doors for politicians pushing their own agenda.
Is the government shutting up private researchers? No. It's as simple as letting the American people do what is necessary, and the government staying out of it until it becomes a national concern that cannot be dealt with.
I would imagine that you can be clumped into the group of people that think enacting environmental protection laws will curb global warming? I'm not sure when our nation's ego got so big that we think we can change the world with our laws.
Since when has it been the government's (or in particular our President's) responsibility to tell us about environmental problems? Certainly if this so-called global warming problem begins to threaten the US in a direct manner, something should be done. But up until this point I have seen no such information come to light. We all know the dangers of global warming, and we have all been pretty well informed by researchers outside the realm of politics.
Global warming certainly may be real, and we may be causing it. But I don't believe that the president should be taking a "stance" on global warming. And that includes federal scientists; I think the bigger problem is not that they aren't being allowed to say anything, but that we have federal scientists working on global warming in the first place! Since when has global warming been a major security issue to our nation? The government should not be there to do the major research. That responsibility is reserved for the world of academia.
If and when global warming becomes a US threat, then by all means let them speak their mind about how we are to "protect" ourselves. Until then they should leave it to the American people to decide how to curb global warming on their own.
1. A beneficial factor or combination of factors.
2. Benefit or profit; gain: It is to your advantage to invest wisely.
3. A relatively favorable position; superiority of means: A better education gave us the advantage.
I have never seen the benefit for me of running WGA. Also, I have never profited from WGA. A successful validation means I have helped Microsoft profit, not me. So maybe there should be a clause that says "This software provides a genuine advantage for Microsoft, not the consumer"
I feel bad for your situation, but where I go to school there is one girl in my junior EE class of 21 students and we all do homework with her, respect her etc. because she's a nice person. I don't know you personally but I can tell you that the girls who do "male" things like engineering and have an attitude about it like "I should be respected for this," it makes me not respect them.
For the engineers that tell you that it's a "man's field," tell them they're right, you should be at home cooking something. They'll probably laugh and never bug you about it again. You women need to learn a sense of humor sometimes =) . Even if they're serious, there's no denying the fact that you've accomplished a lot in your career. They'll realize this if they have any brains at all and if not, why care what they think anyways?
My mother was a mechanical engineer at UMass back in the late 70's, the only girl in her class, and all the guys enjoyed having her in class and respected her. Things are different for everybody, I wouldn't take your own situation and make a gross generalization from it, although what you describe is sad.
A good point, but it should be noted that it is scene releases that you can gauge quality by, not tracker. A good tracker just helps ensure that you are indeed downloading a good quality scene release (along with checking up on your ratio of course:) )
As a Christian, I see your point about how some of our "religious practices" seem anti-American. But Christianity should be viewed as a personal relationship with Jesus, and not the rule-following, ritual-practicing religions around the world. Christianity is the only religion where it's not about the religion, it's about love for Jesus. That may seem silly if you don't believe that he is the savior of the world (!) but it's the core of Christianity. All of the hullabaloo about worshiping the "King" as you called him is funny because that's what the Jews wanted, but didn't get. Jesus is king of our HEARTS, he's not a literal king by any means.
Anyways, bringing it back to topic... I don't care what scientific discoveries are made; it's not going to change my beliefs by any stretch. I attend a Christian college (Grove City College in W. PA) and I took a course in astronomy a couple semesters ago. The course was taught from a scientific point of view and detailed the scientific evidence we have that supports the earth being billions of years old. Obviously many Christians in the class were up in arms about this. The way he explained it was that no matter what science tells us, he still believes God had a hand in it. Whether
a) God designed the earth to look 5 billion years old (or however old it is, I've forgotten what I learned in the class =D )
b) It took God 5 billion years to make the earth (i.e. 7 days God time ~= 5 billion years earth time)
c) Science is wrong and the earth really is only 14000 years old,
I will still put my trust in Jesus.
So with global warming, you need to understand that these Christians are only saying what should be said; that science is not perfect, and this should be presented as a theory without enough data taken yet to prove it actually exists. 'If' global warming is true, then it would take many many more years to realize the resulting temperature trend. The earth is not an entirely stable object. Nothing is really. Temperature will fluctuate from time to time, and we could just be on the uprise of a wave of heat. I wouldn't be surprised if 50 years from now we start to hear about some sort of new "ice age" and our impending global doom as eskimos.
We (I and other) Americans aren't as skilled or hard working as foreigners, so our solution is to just let more immigrants in? How about stepping up to the plate and showing the rest of the world that we can function on our own with as little help from others as possible! If our best solution is to let someone else do the job right, what does that say about our work ethic and ingenuity as a country?
Humorous because it's true. But I would be careful attacking these people for how much money they make. Regardless of how much money these "artists" make on their labels and how many mansions executive types own, the RIAA has no business claiming enormous grievances for their songs.
It's important to remember that what what's the issue here isn't the amount of money, it's the principle of the thing. These guys think they can do whatever they want just because they have their fingers in so many pies.
Check out this site for fan-made adventure games (I believe they are mostly free) - http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/ . Some of them are quite good!
Hardly my point. The privacy that concerns me now is any kind of software embedded into future versions of uTorrent. Obviously you will not have to use uTorrent if you choose not. But if Cohen has a handle on what goes into the client there is a possibility of tracking searches, monitoring filenames, reporting torrents with unrecognized hashes of movies, etc. It's stuff like this that current uTorrent users need to be made aware of.
With Cohen walking hand in hand with the MPAA nowadays, how will this affect the privacy of current Torrent users such as myself? I have to admit I'm a bit worried. It doesn't come as a big surprise though. Torrent's excellent code and features make for one of the best clients available right now.
You, sir, are a terrible person.

How about a free PS3 instead? Oh wait, that would just introduce more Sony problems into our lives. Whoops.
A nickel ain't worth a dime anymore
Like I'm going to let airport security subject my laptop to "nitrogen nuclear quadrapole resonance". Sounds like an electronic death wish to me ;) .

Maybe not. Time will tell.
That's incredible, good thinking if you figured that out yourself. Any other useful scripting tips for blocking unwanted junk?
Nobody says it like Carmack, that's for sure. The man has such a way with words =)

Amen. I am tempted to tell my good friend (or former good friend) to start using WoW on Linux. Maybe he'll get banned and hang out with friends again.
Most of the people I know who are serious about pornography use p2p, not the web. Bittorrent anyone?
