It does not seem to be out of line to ask these questions especially considering the other major general purpose operating systems bundle these things and often a whole lot more.

Oh, it contains all the stuff he was asking about. He just wants it all differently. Unfortunately, Microsoft really can't do that because they are a monopoly, and they would get sued for it. Mostly from the EU. You want better apps standard in your OS? Write your EU representative and tell them to back the hell off.

He'll in the EU, they got sued for including IE, and I doubt most of slash dot considers that competitive. They also had to remove media player. Seems like the windows store is a nice way of removing some of that stuff, and offering it as a free download through the windows store. Not a bad idea. Those who don't want it (or are in an oppressive union) don't have to have it, while those that do want it, can get it easily along with any other competing offering. It may not be free, but at least it is distributed the exact same way so it SHOULD avoid lawsuits since the terms are the same.

Utilities that have the most interest will always be in the official stores. Niche stuff maybe not so much. Because they are referring to switching from a desktop version of Windows 7 using a mouse, and going to a completely touch driven device with no mouse. Yes, if you get a brand new computer/laptop/tablet, and want to switch to a touch screen, it will take much longer as you learn how to point at the screen, and the new gestures and how to close applications, etc with no keyboard. That is a far cry from taking a Windows 7 machine with a keyboard and mouse and upgrading it to Windows 8 and continuing to use the keyboard and mouse.

As for the new york times article, re-read the section that starts with "Desktop Windows". Seems they say pretty much exactly what I did. It's the same as Windows 7 with a few minor tweaks and enhancements. The rest of the article is about touch interfaces, the metro apps, and they don't like it. You don't have to use it. You don't have to buy a touch screen. I don't use it, and I don't have a touch screen, nor do I see things heading that way. It's an additional feature that you may or may not like. Just as many people have said before, touch screens (and metro apps) can be nice, but they fail when used as the only interface for people CREATING stuff. It's fine for consumers to consume, but it's a PITA for those that create stuff (documents, spreadsheets, programs, etc). Most people on slashdot are the creator types. Most people however are the consumer types. Many are a mix of both.

You seem to be unwilling and unable to actually even look at Windows 8 at all. I'm certainly not going to change your mind, and honestly, I don't really care to. However, blindly dismissing something out of ignorance is for fools.

I can't speak for everyone. I can only tell you what I have personally done or seen, or tell you when someone says something that is incorrect.

I've mentioned what is better about Windows 8 in other threads, I'm not going to repeat them here. Plenty of other articles about what Windows 8 does right. If you have questions, I'll answer them.

As for iDrive, yes, I read it, but I find it off-topic as what you are describing has very little to do with Windows 8. It's completely different because distractions while driving is dangerous, and obviously most of the user interface there was complete and utter garbage that made you do many useless steps that didn't help. First, applications behave the same, so you won't have to go trying to figure out the new way to bold a word in some hidden menu 5 clicks down when the same application was one click in Windows 7. My analogy was better because it refered to things you do once -- before you begin you main task -- not constantly while you are doing it. Secondly, it's not something that is typically life threatening to the user or to others around them, even if it was.

In fact, if you typically pin your applications to the taskbar, or have your links on your desktop, most uneducated computer users probably couldn't tell the difference between Windows 7 and Windows 8 if you showed them one then showed them the other the next day unless you made a point about it being different.

The differences that people complain about are so trivial, that my ex-wife, who is absolutely terrible at computers picked it up and had no problems after my son taught her everything she needed to know in 30 seconds. The garbage about not being able to have multiple windows on the screen only applies to Metro Applications. I don't use any Metro applications except for a few freebie games, which I suspect is what most people do or will do for a long time. Any application that you can/do run in Windows 7 will act just the same in Windows 8. It's not a replacement. It's not like all of a sudden your Windows 7 apps when you upgrade with Windows 8 you can no longer tile/overlap/switch. You can do absolutely all of it in Windows 8. Some of those you can't do in Metro applications, however, sticking with Windows 7 because you don't like that is silly, because you can't run them AT ALL in Windows 7.

Performance wise? Yes, it boots faster, takes less memory, uses the remaining memory more efficiently for caching. It's pretty easy to check yourself if you don't want to you know, read stuff on the web. Clean install both and see.

Better security? Compared to Windows XP? Are you kidding? They've even added a few more tricks on top of even Windows 7 security as well, like SmartScreen.
