MS has huge profit margins, so they can afford hiring just about anyone. The problem is they need competent engineers. Not everyone who thinks he/she's competent really is, despite the years they wasted sitting in front of the screen. What you describe is true for smaller shops - they really benefit from cheap labor.

Russian space agencies are very promiscuous project-wise. They'll be happy to launch you to Alpha Centauri, as long as you pay. Needless to say, they can't really do it. There won't be a Moon-base not because of technological limitations, but because it requires huge money and a management that a)can get those money _over the years_ (that's the hard part) from the government b)make sure the project is done, which is non-trivial given its complexity

It seems that I failed to emphasize distinction between Iranians in general ("clearly brighter than their neighbours") and their rulers ("islamic loonies"). The guy in question is just a guy who's interested in UAV. But when mullahs want to build some recon/combat UAVs they'll grab him by his balls and he'll do it. Not because he's bad, but because he's within their reach. His view on the government won't matter at all.

How can that be moderated insightful? Iran is a heavily islamic state. Zoroastrians have either converted or migrated to India 1000 years ago. All their achievements are in distant past. Just because Iranians are clearly brighter than their neighbours doesn't mean that we can ignore that islamic loonies are running their country.

What really happens is that after "major advancments in protecting our youth" "we need to put more effort" because crime doesn't go down and youths don't magically become better adjusted. Nanny-state is like gas, it expands unless confined by sitizens. It's a form of power. They can't kill you and rape your wife, but still they can decide what you can or cannot do. That's satisfying. A moral empire is still an empire.
