This Headline implies that NASA it wasting money on 'shooting' probes out just to crash them now.

Remember that Galileo has done it's purpose and to avoid a possible extraterrestrial contamination of another celestial body that possibly may supporting life, they decided to crash it into another planet that (most likely) does not support any life.

NASA isn't in the habit of building something just to throw it away for no good reason. Sure, they make mistakes, but NASA is still ran by humans, and humans make 'human errors.' The technological feats that they have done (and are still doing) boggles the mind. (I'd like to see you calculate the exact vector to break orbit and travel to Jupiter over the course of 2 years with only 2 minutes of burn-time)

NASA is still going strong and I feel quite happy that my tax-dollars are being pourned into it. (Besides they brought us TANG! ;-) )

  14. Re:All this, and it isn't even out yet? on EU Competition Commission Investigating Win2k · · Score: 1

It's honestly nothing to worry about if you have any modern version of BIND running.

According to the reference at Novell (who are very con-NT):
"Unless the DNS server has been upgraded to at least BIND 8.1.2, customers may risk crashing their BIND DNS servers if Windows 2000 severs or clients are deployed."

So versions of 8.1.2 or lower are possibly subject to an 'attack'(?). However any modern (and not to mention secure) OS ships with at least BIND 8.2.* (FreeBSD 3.4 ships with 8.2.2)

I consider this just another attack at Microsoft by another competitor. Our offices require the use of MS Office to remain compatible with our clients (not to mention the sheer ease of use of Word), and right now Windows NT is the most stable way to use those.

Windows 2000 is even more stable than NT4 on all our test platforms (and we're even using Professional as a dial up NAT server and small file server and it's been great on a 64 meg, 200 mhz machine)

One of the things you're going to have to consider that these corporations have been dealing with TIGHTLY CLOSED source for the last several DECADES.

Any large corporation is very slow to change beneath it all (that's just the nature of the beast)--even though it would seem that they've changed thanks to marketing hype, etc.

If we voice our opinions (politely, preferably) about such things, most likely the changes will take place.

It's impossible to expect someone that has put nails into the top shelf of a cabinent for 20 years, to get up, go to another part of the factory and start painting PERFECTLY.

It takes JOB TRAINING. Who trains the corporations? The public does. Who trains the public? The media does. Who trains the media? Hmmm I'll stop before I start ranting..

Just raise the 'penalty flag' tell them the mistake politely (especially in public), and wait a bit. They'll learn.

  19. Interpretation on Who Owns College Students' Notes? · · Score: 1
I believe that it should be noted that what this website is asking for is NOTES.

In my experience the term NOTE is an INTERPRETATION OF DATA that I am experiencing (or if in this case learning). I would not see a problem with this if they were taking the notes for free, but it might be an issue since they are paying for the Intellecutal Property.

SideNote: I for one am against Intellectual Property rules in general because of my adopted rule: "If a secret was meant to be kept, why did you tell your friend?" Mainly due to the fact that if you want to OWN intellectual property you should keep it hidden where noone else can see/use it so it cannot be copied or used against you.

I know I'm ranting/rambling, but I'll finish it off with this:

I feel there is no need for any complaints if this information was being given freely, however since the students are making a profit off these notes, at the very least a reference to the original source (though in reality this usually turns out to be the Professor's professor professor professor (ad nausem)) should be given.

Thanks for your patience and understanding

  20. The Media bases its content rumours? on Everything We've Heard About Columbine is Wrong? · · Score: 1

Of course the media bases its content on rumours. Between the American government 'changing the facts' (YES, it DOES happen) on a few mistakes or other reasons, and the capitlistic media doing its VERY, VERY best to BUY VIEWERS from the competitors, how can one not tell the truth? I think it was an old Jedi who said... "..you'll find many of the truths we cling to depend on a certain point of view..". With this attitude toward the mentality of the American public of "Believe what we say, it is TRUTH", how can I honestly be impressed with the sanctity in which America has fallen to? Yes, I do believe that America is the greatest country I've lived in (yes, I have traveled abroad much in my youth), but with this sort of mentality I wonder... "do I really want to stay?" P.S. When I believe "Dateline" honestly pointed fingers at Naziesque bands (i.e. KMFDM, which is a TOTAL fallacy) I nearly fell out of my chair. Didn't the blame game to Rock and Roll fall through in the 60's 70's and 80's? Perhaps this proves that people don't change, only technology does. Thank you for your time, Tenement
