Would this be a satisfactory system if this hole were plugged?

The problem is whether there is any satisfactory system given the likelihood of whiny Slashbots complaining about either loss of privacy, insecure maintenance of critical information, and threat to identity security. If the default posture is "it will be hacked" to any proposal for a necessary identification system such as this, how could such a system be designed so that these objections are unwarranted?

As we Americans move towards a national healthcare system, this question will need to be answered soon.

Note also that the penalty for a -1 Troll is far more damaging than a +1 Insightful is beneficial.

A post with 10 moderations, of which 5 are -1 Troll and 5 are +1 Insightful, will have +-0 points, but the poster will most likely have had his karma reduced to Bad or Terrible. Any post that pertains to any mildly controversial subject, no matter how well argued, will reduce the karma of the poster. Given this negative feedback loop, only posters who spout along the lines of this site's zeitgeist are rewarded.

One man's insightful or interesting post is another man's troll. Given the relative weightings of the current karma system, Insightful, Interesting, and Funny posts are unequally and negatively balanced by the Troll and Flamebait moderations they attract. Funny moderations are worse in that they inflate post scores without a corresponding increase in karma, so they are ripe for the Overrated moderation which cannot be remedied in metamod. This leaves only Informative posts which are not prone to negative moderations, but that is only if the poster can refrain from giving any strong opinion.

A site full of Informative posts is great for what it is. However it is not really a great conversational environment where people are able to express strong feelings or argue with any vehemency. Unfortunately that is what Slashdot's negatively weighted moderation system has created. In order to eliminate the trolls here, they have taken measures that reduce the likelihood of good posts and increase the number of lukewarm, mediocre posts.

  10. Death throes on AOL, Yahoo Mulling Merger · · Score: 1, Interesting

I remember when Yahoo! and AOL were the most important companies in their field.

AOL was so big that they bought media giant Time Warner.
Yahoo! was so big they were the homepage of over 90% of the internet-savvy population.

The internet changed AOL so much that it became unrecognizable as that company that used to clog mailboxes with 3.5" floppies and CDs with their software. Google surpassed Yahoo!'s hierarchical solution with its ranking-based solution.

Now both companies are in their final years, looking for a way to survive into the next decade. But realistically, without an actual software infrastructure that can be deployed across various device domains, the companies have no compelling story to sell customers.

They will continue to see their users migrate to Google and Apple. The best they can truly hope for is to become yet another app on Android and iOS (YAAOAAI!). They will never again be the gate keepers they once were.

For almost all of my browsing needs, I use Chrome. I don't assume this protects me to any significant degree, but it at least gets me out of the way of these IE exploits, and that is useful.

However, IE is not just the browser application. Any application that incorporates the browser control (and there are many) could be a vector for this attack. The question becomes whether the settings in IE8 or IE9 that block script execution are applicable in those apps since they may rely on that functionality. If the settings carry over, then do my other apps become crippled? Or if they don't carry over, how at risk am I via those apps?

It must be prevented externally of IE itself. The AV software must be able to catch and block any script stepping out of its bounds, and if I can't trust the application to do that by itself, I must trust something else in the system to do that for me. If AVG is the only one that can block this problem, it may be that I am SOL since I won't install AVG.

In a nutshell, there is very little benefit in trying to sell an infinitely copyable item to people who can make their own copies.

Clearly people want the product. What they don't want is to have to pay for it. Surely an imaginative company like Vivid could find a way to distribute their product in this new paradigm.

The word "endangered" is used in several articles referencing this problem. However, no article provides the wild owls' population numbers. Endangered species should be protected, but it should be shown that the species are indeed endangered.

I'm sure Harry Potter did provide some impetus behind taking these animals as pets, especially among young children, but the problem in India is further exacerbated by the belief in the magical properties of the owls, especially tufted owls. The culture of taking these birds from the wild is longstanding, and not traceable back to Harry Potter at all.
