Man I hate those ticketmaster prices. $2.50 to "print at home" so you don't have to bother sending me a ticket? Even if I get will call (which they list as costing $0.00 shipping & handling, as it should) they STILL charge like $4.00 for "shipping and handling." Then they tack on the $4.00 convenience fee on EVERY ticket, what the hell is that!? And no matter what shipping method you choose, they seem to randomly change it for you. Box office is the way to go.
Apparently this guy failed out of economics and had to make up his own title?
From 1996 to 2003, they rose by 8.9% a year Seems to me file sharing didn't really start to take off until 1999-2000. I guess they were just trying to stock their coffers early?
He soon found out that rock concerts and American football games were subject to the same market forces. And why buy tickets to a football game when I can just download it for free? Um.. wait..
Gee I dunno, maybe record companies are taking a bigger cut of everything, driving up CD prices, ticket prices, merch prices as high as they'll go, to the point where illegal downloading is becoming really popular because they're such greedy bastards? I'm used to reading poorly done studies, but seriously did this guy consider any other possibilities, or did the RIAA tell him to go tell the BBC he's a "rockonomics" whiz, give them $1,000 bucks and hand them a story about how downloading is driving up concert prices.
Bowie has advised his fellow performers: "You'd better be prepared for doing a lot of touring, because that's really the only unique situation that's going to be left." I don't even know what that means. Water and electricity are free? How does that relate to illegal downloading at all. Sounds more to me like, "New records are overproduced generic crap, THAT's why people aren't buying them, THAT's why concerts cost more because you need a LOT of equipment and lightshows to make Madonna sound good!" Utter crap.
The only solution to the storage problem is to eliminate the users! Larger disks solve nothing, they find ways to fill them up.
We have a small graphics department. They have a 2 terabyte server all to themselves. I just recently added two 200GB drives to bump them up to 2TB. About a week later they reported the new drives were full. In disbelief I went over to see what they had on there. ONE project was 40GB.
When I got my new computer with an 8GB hard drive in '98, I remember the comments: "Wow! You could do a full install of FFVII on that!" Now hard drives are up to 750GB and Final Fantasy is only up to XI?
Yes, sorry, bad example.
A better one would be: why does anyone play Madden 'XX, when they could go outside and play football?
It's much simpler to play a cool song on guitar hero than it is to pick up a guitar, play a few mangled chords until your fingers hurt, and get all frustrated that you don't sound like Zakk Wylde.
Are you saying a human can react better than a computer can to these situations? This discussion goes far beyond the simple systems in the new Jaguar, but hypothetically... suppose we do have a fully automated car someday. Then the woman who wants to put on her lipstick while her car drives can do so, and the person who actually wants to pay attention to the road and drive his own car doesn't have to worry about her.
As far as unexpected road conditions, that's exactly what this car is designed to handle. It can tell if it's not getting as much traction as normal, even in conditions where you might think the road looks fine. It will then make the proper adjustments (as opposed to saying, I'm already late for work, the roads aren't that bad, I can go full speed!). And if it does hit a deer, the smart collision detection system will take the impact much nicer than a "dumber" car (presumably).
We aren't talking about a fully integrated computerized highway system, we're talking about a car with some nifty features to make it handle better.
How is writing a news story about this a good idea? Kids are stupid, when they pull pranks they sometimes post the info online... why would the cops tell anyone they watch these sites? Unless the theory is that putting their stunts online is motivation for the vandals to commit the crimes in the first place.. but it seems to me kids got into trouble long before myspace came around.
I'm also surprised at all the backlash about lack of privacy on myspace. I guess all of you have a lot more to hide than I do. I mean yeah if you're out breaking the law on a nightly basis... probably don't put that info on myspace... but gee I'm 24 I play guitar, if some idiot who doesn't know me has tons of free time to browse myspace finding that out, more power to you.
I am so sick of reading about how Apple is going to increase their market share tenfold by making it possible to boot windows XP! Apple makes a decent computer. Not great specs by any standards, but they use reliable parts and it all fits together very well and looks seksy. But it's damn expensive too! I can't see a gamer spending a crapload of money on a system that they can't slap the latest video card into every 6 months. And I can't see a business spending crap tons of money on a more expensive machine to do all the same tasks they currently do. Maybe they'll sell some upgrades to people who use an older mac and want the ability to dual boot, but beyond that...?
Problem is I live in a county where the guy who promised to lower our taxes won. Well, now the county's practically bankrupt, and we have a state control board coming in to find new ways to tax us. So THAT really worked out...
In New York they have a line on your tax return to report any online purchases you made over the past year but didn't pay tax on. They even suggest a value for you to pay if you aren't sure! (How nice of them). I think you're also supposed to report any (non-taxable!) purchases made on indian reservations, so they can tax you for that too. How the hell did we get to this point?
But TFA says "computer IT analysts," a category which seems to include everyone in the IT department "from desktop support technician to Webmaster to database wonk," is the number 7 job. So it still seems to rank pretty highly with them, as opposed to the "Crap Jobs" survey.
This stuff happens, kids get humiliated. It's part of growing up. Your situation is what you make of it. You know, what did he gain by sueing these people? He can't change what happened, so at the end of the day it's a quick way to make some cash off some stupid people, and that's pretty shallow.
I think the problem is, people are going to run what is more functional, not what they *want* to run. I want to run linux. However, since I'm not very knowledgable on linux, I can't do the things I need to do as efficiently as I can in windows (yet), so I want windows running most of the time. I found dual booting to be a huge pain; I don't want two OSes for different purpose, I want ONE OS that does (the majority of) what I need to do. And the biggest hurdle macs face right now to becoming that one box that does everything is that there isn't much you can do on a mac that you can't do on a windows box. Sure there are apps that are nicer on macs, and some security advantages, but there is nothing you simply *can't* do on windows. Therefor the only reason for a gamer to buy a mac and dual boot is the notion that OS X is better or cooler somehow, and in the long run I think it just becomes a hassle to use an OS that can't do everything you want just because it does some things better.
OR: People will say, finally, I can buy a mac! But that on app they really like to use that kept them from switching is still only available for windows, so they'll just boot their mac into windows. They don't have any apps on the mac side that they have got used to using. Eventually their windows partition will get bogged down with malware and they won't be able to install a new dvd burner and they'll say, "Hell, this mac is more problems than the old pc!" The OS difference is irrelevant if their favorite program is still on windows.
Firefox downloaded and installed flawlessly, and iTunes streamed songs easily from other PCs on the network.
So he installed a better browser, because IE is crap... and ran iTunes. Why is he even doing these things in XP, he has OS X on the damn machine!!
Obviously the big reason is games, but I think this is going to be bad for gaming on macs in the long run. Not many developers released their games on mac before, but why bother now? Just install XP!
Really, how accurate is GPS? You can't look at a satelite feed and say, "Holy crap, Jimmy is behind the school smoking pot!" I could see it being useful for abduction cases but not much else, unless your child is flying across the country behind your back. What these over-protective types REALLY need is those cool satelite cameras that can zoom right in on their child's nose, like they had in Enemy of the State. And a speaker implanted in the child's ear so they can yell at them remotely.

Believe me I want to give them plenty more storage after seeing what they're working with, but my manager won't approve a purchase.
You were worried about backups when you were 12? I was more concerned with Power Rangers.
We have a small graphics department. They have a 2 terabyte server all to themselves. I just recently added two 200GB drives to bump them up to 2TB. About a week later they reported the new drives were full. In disbelief I went over to see what they had on there. ONE project was 40GB.

Yeah, and why buy GTA when you could just go out and shoot a cop!

How are they going to tax allofmp3? I bet those clever russians have a loophole for just such an occassion.
Shut up, you'll give them ideas!!

So what happens when you install chessmaster 9000 on linux?

Operating systems have got a wee bit more complicated since the DOS days...
