There's a lot of theories about alternatives to the big bang besides the one mentioned in the Yahoo article. The main one that is getting a lot of interest in scientific circles isn't this new one in the Yahoo article. Instead, it's the so called Ekpyrotic theory, with the name coming for the Greek word for fire. It is so intresting because it brings together two disparate areas of physics: inflation and M branes. Inflation is a weird concept that says the universe expanded from the diameter or an atom to the size of a grapefruit almost instantly - required to explain the way galaxies are clumped and clustered in the sky we see today and first postulated by a guy named Alan Guth. M branes are an offshoot of string theory postulated by Ed Whitten. There's tons of stuff on these topics on the web; all of it is facinating, enter any of these terms in a search engine and keep reading. Next stop, Google...
Computergeeks is showing the QX3 as back in stock Monday morning for $42.50 with around 400 units available. The stock they had listed on the website went from 360 to zero yesterday.
J&R Electronics has 100+ units in stock (the salesguy wouldn't say exactly how many) as of 9:30 AM EST Monday morning for $49.88 each plus shipping of $4.95...

And in the hands of geeks, where they belong, instead of a landfill someplace or gathering dust in the back of a warehouse after being removed from active inventory...
You know, this is a terrible thing that happened and this is the first opening on Slashdot I've seen to actually say so. I and many others offer our heartfelt condolences. One way or another, America and Americans screwed up on this one and we are truly sorry. Canadians have always stood by Americans when the chips are down - for example, on the beaches of Normandy for D-Day, as well as the time that is probably forgotten by 99% of the people now, namely smuggling out some Americans in plain sight from Iran during the embassy hostage crisis over 20 years ago...You have been steadfast allies for all the right reasons and it is very much appreciated. I only hope that the investigation on this incident is an honest and open one, as a first step in making things better...instead of the worse a whitewash / coverup would bring.
Hey, you guys on the West Coast, don't take this so hard, you've seen this scene already. It's a straight rip-off from the death-of-Spock scene. Separated by panes of glass...the friends struggle to open the door...but no, can't do that, they're already dead...so we have the mauldin goodbye...at least they didn't say anything about the needs of the many and needs of the few.
Oh, and in the last scene they get buried in Arlington.
Immersing yourself in the mythology of your native culture as a child hasn't been a waste for thousands of years - it's at the core of what makes us HUMAN. Or so I tell myself, wishing I'd never thrown out my first-year issues of ASM, tattered tho they were from repeated immersion.
Hmmm. Altho the article is not detailed enough to really tell whats going on, there are other possibilities besides communication, chemical or otherwise, between the bacteria. What they have is a SYSTEM consisting not only of bacteria, but also moist growth medium, antibiotics, air, and the plastic or glass petri dish. Let's say the plastic/glass is inert and isn't playing a role in the effect. Possible there is some interaction between just the air, moist growth medium and antibiotic and the EFFECT of this interaction is happy bacteria, which aren't participating in originating the effect. For example, putting in the 5 mm gap in the wall to connect the two chambers also allows water vapor transfer between the dosed and undosed media. If the bacteria colonies grow and absorb water, the media around them becomes dryer and the drug more concentrated and deadly. If there's a vapor pathway to fresh medium, maybe the dry drugged medium absorbs water thru the air from the undrugged fresh medium, diluting it. Since the bacteria are only growing on the surface, this is enough to keep them going. I'm not saying this is what IS happening, I'm saying that true science is about trying to consider ALL possibilities, even the ones that won't make the news, like water vapor transfer instead of bacterial chemical warning signals. Rule one in science is always consider some other (usually unglamorous) possibility.....
If you've never heard Hawking's musical efforts (I kid you not), now is the time. Check out www.mchawking.com and prepare to bust a gut laughing. This is not to be missed.
I think this whole thing has been blown WAY out of proportion. They measured the illumination levels of pixels in 15 wavelengths. Out of all the Pathfinder photos, six pixels were found that matched the illumination levels you would expect for chlorphyll. Four of the six pixels were of the spacecraft body. Surely NASA checked the lander for moss growth before launch so two-thirds of the pixels are false positives right off the bat. Now, if you were going to bet on the origin of the other two (count em - two) pixels, what's the odds breakdown - chance vs. Mars life vs. flecks of paint or something else from the lander that we ALREADY KNOW can trigger false positives?
This stuff really is something and it's just gotten big in the past few years. Instead of installing itchy sheet after sheet of that pink insulation stuff in houses, the new way is just to spray it in. There's a big movement to make dome homes with it too. Check out this.
I have yet to see ANYBODY in this field tie the Pokletnov claims to the mainstream theory of gravity believed by most particle physicists, which is that it is caused by a particle called the Higgs Boson. What's interesting is that these mainstream physicists share many traits with Pokletnov to the untrained eye - they haven't really found the Higgs particle yet, they just think it's there because it ought to be, and without understanding of some really DEEP math the Higgs at first blush seems to be just as much handwaving as anti-gravity. Some of the best public-consumption stuff on the Higgs is to be found here, something about the (so far unsuccessful) search here, and an audio discussion with the inventor of the whole concept, Dr. Higgs himself, here. If you want to get into the serious math of the Higgs (good luck) one place to start is the bottom of the web page here.

You can still get in there and slug it out at EBay...

Hmmm. Revealing the fate of the Gunmen. Are you sure this whole thing wasn't....a conspiracy???
He is??? Just what does this mean? I thought he died when he fell over the brink with that monster. Believe it or not, I've never read the trilogy...
Well, this point was actually a great surprise to me when I obtained...ahem...first hand experience....
Hey, at least Slashdot didn't reveal that in the last scene, our heros are buried in Arlington...

Wow. Computergeeks had around 350 units in stock when the story was posted 8 hours ago or so...
The IntelPlay site has a good QX3 FAQ as well as the product's 3/29/02 obituary. We can only hope they are clearing out stock before introducing the new improved version, but I doubt it - Intel is discontinuing ALL Intelplay toys, not just the microscope. With MTV style advertising like this it's no wonder it failed to find a continuing market niche as a classic toy - it takes longer than a 10 second attention span to do science. Some gross-out photos are here, as well as a comparison of a QX3 vs.Zeiss dissection scope as well as a comparison of the QX3 and another "inexpensive educational toy" called the Pocketscope. The main Pocketscope site talks about how to add video and lighting to their superior optics. Tinkering with, adjusting, modifying and using the QX3 is discussed here, here and here. More places to buy a QX3 before they go universally out of stock are GlobalMart, Erwincomputers, and Amazon.
Nah, I'm just a geek that thinks this thing is fun. No vested interest here.

Actually, he ALSO originally had a "thing" for the somewhat shy and wallflower-ish Daily Bugle assistant Betty Brant, didn't he?
