"Then again, if people actually did what they were supposed to and actually supported the things they enjoy using instead of stealing them, DRM wouldn't be needed."
That's not really true. The restrictions aren't put in there because people will. Instead, they're put in there because people might. Reality isn't a factor in deciding to put copy restrictions into a software, so altering reality won't change the outcome. You should look at the movie industry's out-cry about the sale of vcrs many moons ago, it'll give you some insight into where I'm coming from.
"We are not here to make you money with clickthroughs..."
Your rant about Roland served Slashdot some ads. Here's a thought: Don't post any comments in Roland's threads, then suddenly Slashdot will have an incentive to toss the tosser.
This is really just hype more than anything. Well, no. Really it's a niche thing. Film companies (like Dreamworks.. as TFS mentions) need monitors with a bigger color space and higher dynamic range. It's not a mainstream monitor, which should be fairly obvious from the ridiculous price tag. But it is useful for a particular industry.
While you can certainly complain that some monitors have more visible dithering than others, only an idiot would maintain that some monitors dither and others don't. Only an idiot would take somebody saying that so literally. Imagine what that says about the people wasting their mod-points on this non-point.
"...or enhance gritty 320x200 CCTV images into uber-high resolution with no artifacts or fuzziness."
Depending on the footage, this is semi-possible. There's software out there that can watch the motion of an object and determine what the sub pixels were. It's not ideal in every scenario (even less likely slow in the case of a blurry face on a security cam...), and it won't be as snazzy as CSI, but it is possible in a general sense. It only works, though if it can get actual motion vectors from the footage.
this is a an extremely overpriced luxury item who's main job is already done by $10 pieces of plastic. it doesn't take an einstein to figure out that such a niche product is going to post weak numbers. I guess it's fitting then that Einstein died before the iPod came out.
Scroll wheel makes a crappy pgup/pgdn. Either it jumps too many pages or (if you lower sensitivity) makes scrolling in continuous mode (e.g. web browsers) way too slow. That's not how the track pad on the MB Pro behaves. It actually works pretty nicely. I've caught myself using that even though I've had the mouse in my hand a few times. You're right, scroll wheels leave quite a bit to be desired.
Interestingly, every single person who's read this has vehemently disagreed with you. That should tell you something about yourself... but I doubt you're going to pick up on it. This is Slashdot. If you end up on the wrong side of public opinion, it's easy for you to express yourself and have every single response be against you, it doesn't matter that you're actually right or wrong. So I agree with you, I doubt he's going to pick up on it. The problem is that on this site in particular and it's wonderful 'thought control' moderation system, it is hardly a useful tool in telling somebody they're crazy.
And no, I don't agree with the guy you're criticizing. I just don't agree with your specific statement as it was written.
"I was using multi touch on my MAC 4-5 years ago. "
Not like this, you weren't. The closest you might have come is if you've used an iPhone. Even then, what Microsoft showed was fancier. Watch the video.
And so it begins, watch as the Wii goes the way of the Dreamcast due to "no hardware mods needed" to run unsigned software. Actually, what killed the Dreamcast was that Sega needed to build and sell another 10 million machines and didn't have the cash to do so.
HyperCard was always one of those languages people talked about that sounded made-up to me.
Sorry to break this to you, but ALL computer programming languages are "made up". First you make up a language, then you implement it, then you use it. It's not like they just dig programming languages out of the ground like coal. Wow... I like how the poster I'm quoting and everybody who modded this up completely missed the original point of the GP post. What he meant by "sounded made-up to me" was "I never actually saw this thing anywhere".
This is, arguably, one of the most idiotic posts I've ever seen modded up to +5. I can't believe you actually thought he meant that he believed that most programming languages have been refined through millions of years of evolution. I can't believe at least 3 dudes with mod-points came by and completely missed that, too. Wow. Just... wow. Basic reading comprehension FAIL.
"In your preferences, under "Authors", you can uncheck his name, and his stories should disappear for you."
Everybody knows that. The problem is that the moderation system rewards righteous bitching. It's the idiots with mod points that are keeping these memes alive. "Oh look, somebody's complaining about kdawson. I hate him, too. If I mod him up, instead of rewarding Slashdot with more page views, they'll stop posting kdawson's stories!"
Oh well, back to reading +5 posts about how kdawson sucks, Balmer throws chairs, and nobody wants a cell phone that does anything more than make and receive calls.

"Is the search function really so hard to use?"
Yeah because Slashdot's search function is second only to Google.
"How do you justify the statement that Microsoft is usually more greedy than Apple?"
I imagine that it is because Microsoft's gotten more 'slashdot time' than Apple.

"What makes him think that people with foreclosures & collapsing currency are going to give a shit about running out and buying a new gizmo? "
What makes you think that the entire US population is tied up in foreclosures? You know that the US population just rolled 300 million, right?
And no, I don't agree with the guy you're criticizing. I just don't agree with your specific statement as it was written.
Well, that is a fancy error message....
What sucked about it?
"I'd say layer -- having several hundred lasers in a single drive is a sure sign you've jumped the shark."
Hmm... actually, why don't they use mutiple lasers on a disc? Get some paralell reads going...?

"Or is FS short for Frankenstein?"
I doubt it, Frankenstein was the creator, not the monster.
"Good. You just do that. We don't want sad pathetic losers who can't leave their damn phone alone for five minutes in here anyway."
It's hard to take you seriously when you only spend 5 minutes at a time at a theme park.
