  1. But to say that software is unusual in this regard is demonstrably false.

Ehh I don't think so, I mean most commercial software has a demo version to try out. Something like that could be a solution here, but I'm not saying it's a practical one.

Gmail is NOT "getting better every week". It hit its peak about a year or so ago, before they forced this idiotic new UI change on us.

Just wanted to second this. If I could go back to the way it was a year ago I'd be happy. I'm also tired of the Gmail Labs kludges that add functionality and break something somewhere else. (like the preview pane that makes it so I can no longer see the 'recent activity' at the bottom of the screen.)

I wouldn't be offended if they took what they know about it now and did a rewrite, thoughtfully including a number of the features from Labs. Do a little streamlining, reduce some of the bloat, all that jazz. Oh well, I can dream.

That's not a Google tax (since it isn't shared across all Google equipment), it's a "Paying American Wages instead of Chinese Wages" tax. Cost of living in the US is higher.

Please pardon my ignorance, but is this really true, or is it that Google felt their product should be priced higher for whatever feature set it has? I haven't seen a before and after comparison and I have trouble believing Google would tout it being American made with that much more cost associated with it.

Apple really should push the AirPlay device mirroring angle. I see it really being the ultimate iPad accessory -- it's awesome to be able to mirror stuff directly to the TV or play videos.

I just recently have been exposed to this and I have to say not only that I'm impressed, but I hope we get some competition going here.

To those who haven't seen it, it works like this: You have your iDevice and you want something on it to appear on the screen. Double Click home button, swipe, and click the "Air Play" button. As long as you're on the same network, blam, it's on the screen. It reminds me of Iron Man, Tony Stark flicking things from his phone to the displays. At my house now it's like "Wanna see a funny video I found on Youtube?" *video on TV*

Sounds like Google's laying the ground work to do this, too. Awesome stuff.

As much as I was a chickenhead in my youth, I gotta say that the Atari 8 bit family had better video. I think. I haven't thought much about it in ages. If I had the room, I'd get an Atari 800 to play with.

I don't know how the Atari 800 compared to the Commodore 64, but when I was a kid my parents got me a used 800XL originally owned by possibly the biggest pirate ever. I've yet to find a video on Youtube of a game on that machine that I haven't played!

It was great machine to have at the age of 10. I remember some of the games I had were written in BASIC, I had fun going in and editing them. Heh.

Recently I went on a Youtube spree to check out some of the games I used to play, and I gotta say I was impressed with what I found. Check out this one:

This is Goonies, I suppose you'd call it either an adventure or possibly a puzzle game. I remember firing that one up over and over again and spending all this time trying to figure out how to progress to the next screen. I can't think of a modern day equivalent of that game.

Fun stuff. I really don't regret that this is the machine I had while all my friends had NES. (Although I was perturbed at the time...)

They're both called patents, and they're both based upon intellectual property.

Can you tell the difference between a man and woman? They both have the word 'man' in their names.

Now if we're done pretending to be intellectual here, the difference is that if this were a patent dispute, this would be about preventing technology from being used. This has nothing to do with a small inventor, unless of course he goes to Samsung's lengths to duplicate an existing product.

You keep insinuating that people replying to your posts don't know how to read.

I really don't understand why my comment was modded down. The complaint is that IP Law is stifling innovation, right? There are plenty of examples of that happening, right right? Great. So what about in this context? Samsung is in trouble for copying the iPad. If Apple wins, Samsung has to change their design. And what do you call a change in design? Innovation!

Now you may have an issue with that statement. Fine, argue with it, maybe the word 'Insightful" will appear next to your post. But before you hit reply, I just have one question: If Samsung is just copying details of a successful product (as opposed to spending the time to try out ideas of their own that might... *gasp* .. come up with an unexpected benefit that the consumer will like..), how does that lead to innovation? This is a serious question, I mean the Tab wasn't even cheaper than the iPad.

That would be because you see the word 'patent' and not the word 'design'.

From the f'n article that you and the idiot with the mod point didn't read:

Reached for comment, Apple reiterated the same message itâ(TM)s been hammering at since this debacle began. âoeItâ(TM)s no coincidence that Samsungâ(TM)s latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad, from the shape of the hardware to the user interface and even the packaging,â spokeswoman Kristin Huguet told AllThingsD. âoeThis kind of blatant copying is wrong and, as weâ(TM)ve said many times before, we need to protect Appleâ(TM)s intellectual property when companies steal our ideas.â

Go look up what a design patent is. It's a point that's been hammered into the ground only a million times in the comments section here since late last year.
