And btw, how do you judge the speed of something moving overhead? How can you compare a trail in the night sky with a jet airplane, when you cannot even see the object and have no idea how large it should be? If you don't know the size, you can't tell the speed (as you can't judge distance). Common commercial jets are similar enough in size then observation allows some rough judgements about their speed.
Objects with what appear to be sparks coming off? Sounds like a meteor to me. As to this:
And as to why three objects can come into the same area---a larger meteor that has broken up in the past, or several objects in resonance in their orbit will be travelling in the same path, with very close time.YEKIMENKO: How would a microwave generator be used "in anger" Boris?
BELITZKY: It would be used to fire a plasmoid, that is, a blob of plasma into the path of an incoming missile, its warhead, or an aircraft. The plasmoid would effectively, ionize that, region of space and, in this way, disturb the aerodynamics of the flight of the missile, warhead, or aircraft, and terminate their flight. This makes such a generator and its plasmoid a practically invulnerable weapon, providing protection against; attack via space or the atmosphere.
Plasma is a gas...even in large quantities, it is subject to rapid diffusion in the atmosphere. It is hot--the air surrounding it is cool. It has a tendancy to expand with respect to the air around it and diffuse.
If you want to believe though, please go ahead and do so.
A meteor's observed speed depends on it's speed relative to the earth. If it is travelling at a slightly different speed, and is being overtaken, or is overtaking, the earth, in a similar orbit, a very horizontal, "slow" flight path could be observed.
The explosion that is described seems consistent with something similar to the Tunguska event.
If not, when the first spams start coming, get very pedantic on the abouse@ reporting. Some of the first ones will be small time operators trying to sell lists to you. Get them shut down.
Don't download older server versions, like 338--they will not work.
Only get the 348 version client and server. The older one (338) server was out a month ago, so that is why many places have it.

One of those rare, but inevitable moments of technical difficulties is upon us. Our finger script blew a cork, so if you are having problems accessing one of the.plan links above, that is the problem, we're working on it. We also had to purge some unread email from the mail server as a result of the server crash that the finger script caused, so it's possible your message was lost if it was sent in within the last hour or so, and you might want to resend it. Sorry about the problems, any patience you can spare while we investigate what's up is appreciated."

Way to go. You/.'ed the finger script at bluesnews.com. How about mirroring it next time, i.e. finger johnc@idsoftware.com > localcopy.txt, then link the local copy?
...I think it's quite possible they made a calculated risk, given that the game would probably be out by now when they wrote the article. They assumed that the reader would find it more interesting because it would be about current games, not some year-old game.
However, in the case that this failed, which it did, they have the backup plan of saying, "Someone mistakingly added the the 'opposing forces', assuming it was the full title of Half-Life."
It's pretty important in journalism to get the scoop (for news items) and also to be current in the 'information' you present. I wouldn't put this kind of thing above anyone.
Because of the "sky is falling" reactions I've seen in this forum, I've gathered a few interesting links. Have a look. (/. appears to have mangled the text in my message, but the links all work, although they look funny).
http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/onlineprod/p rod.html - the blank areas on the map on the left are where there are no measurements. Most of the ocean... Globally averaged atmospheric temperatures in the map on the right. General upward trend, but a LOT of fluctuation.
Most modern meterological stations are within cities, resulting in higher measured temperatures due to residual city heat than stations in more isolated areas.
Atmospheric measurements from satelites in 1998 showed very COLD temperatures---the coldest winter since these measurements began. (found this in the NOAA climate database)
I'm not saying there's nothing to global warming. However we are still emerging from a mini-ice age 10000 years ago. Deserts are expanding. This is what is expected. Perhaps we're helping it along a bit.
I wrote a paper for a class on this. If I could only find it electronically right now I'd post it.
"global warming is not a figment of the imagination, otherwise why would there be such a stir about it, especially among the scientists who have been studying it the most? "
Two words: MONEY and GRANTS. If your field is considered important to society, you get much more funding.
I saw a reference (but can't recall where, Scientific American?) about atmospheric models. Until recently the effect of the CO2 storage capability of the ocean has not been considered. In addition, as someone else mentioned, clouds could not be modelled (and still cannot be).
Why do we need to donate our computing cycles when the NOAA is getting a 1000 node beowulf cluster? (slashdot story) Don't waste your time. Let your computer idle. Don't you know that when it sits there in any modern os, such as LINUX (or NT), the os sends the HLT instruction, which causes the processor to idle, which means 1) less power consumption and 2) less heat, which means longer life? Even win9x users can use a program like Cpuidle to do this.
Recently UTDemo was released, a demo of a game competing for the same market as your upcoming product. According to most accounts, it is a very impressive, polished game, even for a demo. So my question: Has the release of Unreal Tournament Demo by Epic caused any change in the features that will be included in Quake 3 Arena, and/or will Quake3Arena be delayed to add further features in response to Unreal Tournament?
I had some demonstration C-source code for various compression methods once, but I never could really understand it at the time (probably because I was 12 then).
Although as I understand it other people's work was used as well, the work done by these compression pioneers was cruical to the rapid flow of information we have today.

What if this results in prostheics for humans who have misdeveloped or missing eyes? Would you consider it wrong then?
This is not just a matter of curiousity. This is genuine research. Research with making humans see images (who have no eyes) with direct interaction with the brain from electrodes has already been done to a small degree.
Related perhaps? It seems to be relevant to the MS and DOJ trial, but if it means changing securites rules too...

Yet the stock market values it at several times the value of the top Oil company in the world.
I don't know about the article---I'm no Economist, but MSFT > XON on the stock market definitely seems wrong.
These are ALL consistent with meteor events.

Regarding the first event described in Australia:

What, you're going to go for telemarketer operators? They're just kids getting paid $5/hr.
As far as mass-snail mailers, it's not costing you anything. Actually, neither is telemarketers. You can hang up/toss out the mail.
The main complaint about SPAM is that THEY are costing YOU money, or at least piggy-backing off of your internet connection fees.
They may have changed their minds since then.
We'll have to see.
That sucks...you still get like minimum 150 ms ping in Quake.
Obviously.
Your faraday cage needs to have a spacing on the grid similar to the wavelength of the offending RF signals, at least in that order of magnitude.
You going to shield the glass of the CRT?
What about the cable between your video card and monitor.
No computer is completely surrounded. There are big gaping holes--i.e. the floppy bays. If you wanted, you could completely surround it to.
Also, in a similar vein, people could shield their ethernet cables...
They're not trying to decode it into text--they're trying to view it the exact same way you are viewing it--as a video signal.
For example, if you are running your monitor at 72 hz, and your TV at 60hz, the signals should be separable.
In addition, if they know what channel you're running your TV on, it's even easier to filter the TV signal out.
(Based on basic principles of EMF.)
For example, if someone is joking in their answer, a computer program cannot tell the difference, while a psychologist might be able to.
