I can see how running multiple processes would make Jail better for *BSD, but if you want to run an entirely different OS in a VM, it just isn't there. That said, I don't think VMware is as awesome as Xen, but Xen has trouble running certain OSes that VMware can run without issue (within reason), so I think they all have their strong areas of coverage.

If you plan on a municipality/federal government doing some kind of funding, which is available currently via the RUS grants through the FDA's website, you might well take 2-3 years to get it rolling. If you have funding from other sources, go for it! I actually started a WISP in the "Southwest" (Arizona) back in 2001 and it did well, but bandwidth costs were prohibitive. I sold out to a local Cell phone company and they still use the infrastructure we built out, but they could better afford the bandwidth.

  18. Rackable Systems on Reasonable Hardware For Home VM Experimentation? · · Score: 1

I bought a Rackable Systems dual proc, each with dual cores with 16 gig of ram and a 500gib hard drive (internal) off of ebay for less than $400 US. It is currently running 4 Checkpoint R65 firewalls, a windows 2003 server, a windows XP workstation and a Provider-1 management server. All that eats about 6-7 gigs of ram and 3 processors when the traffic gets pretty high. When I use the Provider-1 system to manage the firewalls, it boosts up to 4 cores and 8-10 gigs of ram. The system is quite noisy, but I stick it in another room and it helps. I have 2 terabytes of NAS that I run most of the VMs off of with a 24 port gigabit switch.

Does that make sense? Not being snarky, but just stating how it appears to me. **Disclaimer** I am not a lawyer, nor do I pay one on T.V.
