How to fix it? Where do you start... The whole patent thing with big corporations is diabolical. Take the whole "AOL" and "Instant Messenger" patent/trademark discussion for example - where is it going to end?
College is for having fun and acting the eejit and generally screwing around. When you leave college/university then the reality of finding a job and having to support yourself and get on with the sobering thought of getting a career sets in, then you start to mature.
Life is far too short to be unhappy in your work. The stress from working long hours at an unpleasant and demanding job that you do not like is just not worth it. I definately would take a pay cut to have a more interesting job. The quality of life would be so much higher, and you can't put a price on happiness.
I'm currently writing this from Japan (originally from Northern Ireland), where I am here teaching English to Japanese High School kids. The pay is quite good, but I would still do this job if they just paid for my food, rent, bills and other "necessities". It's a very rewarding job and I completely love it. Unfortunately, the job is for a maximum of 3 years and then I have to move on to real life again! Maybe I'll be more bitter and twisted in a few years. Ask me again then.
I'm boring, straight to the point, and can't be creative even if my life was on the line. Hire me!
