I have no sailing experience, but all of this reminds me of biking. In particular, why I don't bike on busy, winding roads. I see lots of bicyclists that do, and of course they have every right to be there, but man, it's too damn scary. Too easy for some driver not paying attention and too close to the shoulder to come around a bend and wipe you out.

The 1984 ad was brilliant. It worked on all levels. When all ads on TV were cheesy spots, it was a mini-movie. It had the "1984" vibe. The perfect message -- anti-IBM (unfriendly, corporate). The perfect timing -- launched during the Superbowl, before Superbowl ads were a big deal. If I recall it put Superbowl ads on the map.

The PS3 ad campaign, while I'll give it style points, was totally the wrong message. Who the hell wants to buy an expensive, obsidian overlord dominating their living room? And the creepy baby! Uncanny valley is not where you want to place your console.

The Wii's ad campaign was kinda weird too, with the Japanese and little car. Totally un-American (think big meals and big cars). But at least they showed ordinary people playing and having fun.

So what was the point of your post? Microsoft took a huge step forward, but it still can't stop the average user from getting their browser owned? The same browser they do online banking with? You give lots of advice that is good for geeks who take a more-than-usual proactive security approach, but what about the vast majority (hundreds of millions) of users who do not?

I think what we should all take from this is that Microsoft cannot release a secure browser, despite tremendous pressure to do so. Microsoft should be embarrassed. It's 2007 and the same kinds of problems from 10 years ago are still occuring.

"Tired" doesn't mean that it needs to be replaced. Sorry to nitpick, but yeah, the connotation is that it needs to be replaced. An analogous term is "stale". There is this pervasive idea that everything needs to be re-invented to be fresh in technology. I'm glad this point was addressed in an intelligent manner, as a counterpoint to the usual Microsoft bashing and Mac lovefest.

I don't think it's reasonable to assume the ad came from Obama. As YouTube shows, anybody can make a pro-anything video.

You talk about plausibility deniability. That cuts so many ways. You could argue that this guy was a Republican (seems unlikely, given who he worked for and his history). You could argue he was pro-Clinton (seems unlikely, as this attack hurts her image too much). Or you could argue that it was Obama, given all the connections. If anything, the last seems the most likely from a "plausible deniability" angle. It's also possible he just did this on his own.

So, what *evidence* do you have that he was out to frame Obama? Pointing to generic Wikipedia articles on dirty tricks doesn't count as evidence.

What evidence do you have that he was trying to frame Obama, instead of just being an over-zealous supporter? For that matter, for all you know the Obama campaign could have knowingly approved this, and this guy is just willingly taking the fall.

I stare at the screen for hours a day. I don't want to stare at blaring colors that serve no other purpse than to say "look how cute and shiny I am!". Besides being hard on the eyes, the XP color scheme looks like it's designed for children (which it probably is, aimed at the masses in a patronizing way).
