  1. Re:* yawn * on U of Wisconsin's Mac OS X Security Challenge · · Score: 1
every operating system on the face of this earth has been hacked, cracked, and 0wned. Numerous times. Get over it.
Ok... I'm sure most operating systems have been hacked, but all?

Here is a short list of OS's that have not had remote explit vulnerabilites that I am aware of (Some probably have had vulnerabilities):

    • MS-Dos
    • Z/OS
    • VMS
    • ReactOS
    • RISC OS
    • AmigaOS
    • Plan 9
    • CP/M
    • Commodore BASIC/KERNAL
    Fairly obscure OS's:
    • IBM's Basic Operating System
    • BugOS
    • GCOS (formerly GECOS)
    • i5/OS (formerly OS/400)
    • MenuetOS
Anyway I'm pretty sure at least one of those has not been exploited. And I did not even include embedded operating systems.
  2. A good thing on GtkRadiant under GPL · · Score: 2, Interesting

This is a good thing. Despite GtkRadiant retaining close ties to ID the licence on it was never very clear. Indeed if one dug around there were around three or four EULA's that may have applied, and they seemed to contradict each other. It was not even particularly clear whether the development of GtkRadiant was even legal to develop. Other software projects that would have used Radiant as a level editor have been scared to touch it.

Anyway, one may wonder why Radiant was not released under the GPL when Quake II was, or even when Quake III was. I'm assuming that it did not occur to ID to release it under the GPL, because the source code was already available. Finally though somebody noticed this and corrected it.

Note: I may have some or all of the facts wrong, as I am not a GtkRadiant developer, or ID employee. This message was based on my experience as a user of GtkRadiant.

Well actually for a very short time the Gamecube was at a loss (according to that article), but that was probably due to a last second problem. That article implies the Gamecube was not intended to be sold at a loss.

Now, Let us look at these other consoles that sold for a loss:

Sega Saturn: Sega was desperately trying to beat the playstation.

Sega Dreamcast: Sega was just plain desperate at this point.

Xbox: Microsoft did not care about a loss on this. They make thousands on licencing fees for every single third party game produced even it not one copy sells! Besides, Microsoft was mainly interested in getting into the market. they could have lost $500 dollars per x-box console and not cared! The simple fact is that Microsoft wanted to enter the game business but did not want to buy out sony to do so, and Nintendo would not have sold.

So the only reasons so far for selling consoles at a loss is Desperation and tring to enter the market.

For the hardware side you could make one of these:

    http://www.redfrontdoor.org/cd-changer.html

Software would be some bash scripting, and a few short programs.

On the other hand, it will probably take more time to make one of these than it would take to do the cd changing by hand.

Bonzai Buddy is an application that uses Microsoft Agent. Microsoft Agent is a technology that can be used to give 'character' to an application. It is used as the basis of the XP search assisant, the Office Assistant (the newer ones that are not enclosed in a window), And even the little question mark thing that appears the first time you boot into Windows XP after installation (or after sysprep).

Microsoft created (or at least holds the rights to) may characters. Some are fairly application specific not having a fairly complete set of aninimations. But Microsoft also has four general purpose characters, one of which is the green parrot named Peedy.

IMHO, their response should not have been "No, we will not give you that information." it should have been, "No, we do not record that information."
I'm not sure that that would be right either. Let us assume that Google is not evil at all. It would still make sense to keep track of every set of search terms every searched for, and the number of times in a certain tyime period (say a week) that that term was searched for. They would use this information to keep track of the current most popular searches. They could look at the results these searches returned and see if there are many irrelevent results. If there are, then they would look at their current algorithm and see if some tweaks could be made to increase the relevence of the top search results.

Perhaps you are confusing retaining information that could potentially be identifying with being evil. But if that is the case, you would be evil if ou archived old email as that may contain personally identifying information.

Or do you think Mozilla Firefox is evil? It is published by Mozilla Foundation's wholely owned commerical subsidiary: Mozilla Corportation.
