As a PhD student I have to release aritcles to these journals. I must release at least 3 articles to journals that are indexed by Thompson Web of Science, by doing that I must give away my copyright and sometimes the institute Is paying to them. My proffessor has to release articles to get funding and to keep his job. Others release articles in hopes to become a professor one day. Really, the system is sick - the goverment funding is divided in our university to institutes based on who publishes more to journals indexed by the databases.

Yesterday I received an invitation of publishing to a journal special issue on my narrow field of research. The journal is free to everybody and I get to keep the copyright tho it does not give me any points torwards PhD. After reading the comment on that torrent I feel obligated to write an article to the journal even if I really don't have any time for it.

PS! The stuff that's usually called 4G is not fourth generation tech either. 4G means 1Gbps when stationary and 100Mbps when on the move.

4G shoudl get you 1Gbps when stationary and 100Mbps when on the move (in car or bus). Here, in developing Estonia, we get 21Mbps everywhere and in some areas (towns) 42 Mbps from 3.5G networks. It seems unfair, that you pay more to get less.

Is the decompression step of images in web hardware accelerated? I do know that videos made of jpeg frames can be decoded in hardware but do the browsers actually use the hardware? When I first heard about WebP I assumed Google is pushing an unified decoder architecture that would process all videos and images in hardware saving some precious joules while doing so. Never bothered to check it out tho.

It might be simpler and operate on different basis. For example - valve gifted their entire catalogue of games to the participants of Portal 2 ARG who managed to get all 36 potatoes. They also cherry picked the 10 community leaders from the ARG and fly them over to Valve HQ and provided them with early access to portal 2. Essentially they created a bunch of torch bearers who will promote Valve in their respective communities. Another example could be a fan who e-mailed for an autograph and got disproportional response.

Hydro-plant is much worse - a dam break at large hydro-plant has potential to kill millions of people. If a nuclear reactor melts down it kills few and people have time to evacuate. Some more people will have health problems but it's still far better than being dead.

Comparing to the actual price the $5 is as good as free but creates a small entry barrier in sense I have to go searching for my credit card or iTunes store credentials. Maybe they want us to be all set for publishing once we get this XCode running on our machines making the iTunes account creation a part of installation process.

Do you really know what an atom is, or that a Higgs boson is a rather important thing, or did you simply accept they were what someone told you they were?

As much I understood from philosophy of science the science is set of models that describe universe we live in. Often the models are incompatible - an atom means different things to different people as there are different models (classical physics, quantum physics, etc.) to describe atoms and they are all right to extent. Right is even the chemistry teacher who uses tennis balls to describe atoms in a molecule.

While it might be difficult to understand the cutting edge of science it's easy to understand high school physics. There are plenty of appliances in kitchen that once belonged in leading scientific labs such as light bulb, refrigerator, boiler, radio, tv, etc. People don't just believe they work - they KNOW they work and often HOW they work.
