I don't even think the readers read the comments anymore. There's comment dupes constantly now! I mean is it too much to ask that they take 10 minutes to skim the comments on the front two or three stories before they post a comment?
Yeah. I noticed that. I understand when not to use 'begging/begs the question' when meaning 'raises the question' . But I have read that wiki page before, and I just read it again, but it still makes no sense to me. Can someone please explain in plain english when one *would* use the phrase begging the question?
"That begs the question" is an appropriate reply when a circular argument is used within one syllogism. That is, when the deduction contains a proposition that assumes the very thing the argument aims to prove; in essence, the proposition is used to prove itself, a tactic which in its simplest form is not very persuasive.
wtf? I for one welcome our Fosset story posting overlords. We've already had a bunch of stories on this, it's nice to get the conclusion. As for the US election, is it even finished yet? I'm sure ther'll be time for it to appear on./ front page. If you are that desparate, try google.
Sweet. I see now. But why are the tags on ~50% of the stories overlapping onto the text that reads 'Read More...' ?? Some times it seems to wrap onto 2 lines, avoiding the overlap, sometimes it just clashes.
Of course when I said karma, I meant score. My browse level is 1:45, threaded, oldest first.....
And while I'm at it how come in Opera 9.61 WinXP the Slashdot story headings show up as Black on Green which means I can't read the them without tilting my screen. I guess it just completes the whole don't RTFA and now I can't even RTFHeadings.. (works fine in FF3 btw)
it's been 4 minutes since I last posted a comment... AND???
And why do my posts never show up with the body of the post visible without clicking, whilst other users who post with a karma of 1 do have their posts show up with the body in view? I just browse at the default settings...
Sounds like what you want IS twinview. Xinerama has a bunch of stuff wrong with it and a few limitations that disappear when using the nvidia twinview mode.
Ok, get this - driving to work this morning on the M1 motorway, I looked over to my right and there was a woman in a brand new BMW doing I guess about 90mph with her face up close to her rear view mirror putting on her bleedin' makeup!
WTF?!
I looked away for a couple of seconds and when I glanced back over to her she was starting slowly stray halfway over in my lane still dabbing makeup on.
At this point I'm think - no, surely she's not going to hit me. Is she?
Then suddenly I thought - yep, FUCK ME - she IS going to hit me!
It scared me so much that I panicked and dropped my electric shaver, which in turn knocked the bacon roll out of my other hand.
Mother fucker! Ok, now I'm pretty upset with this tart.
In all the confusion of trying to straighten up the car - fortunately I was steering with my knees anyway so it wasn't too bad but my mobile thingy dropped out my ear fell straight into my coffee causing it to splash and
burn BIG JIM AND THE TWINS, this caused me to scream, which made me drop
the cigarette out of my mouth, ruined my shirt and DISCONNECTED AN IMPORTANT CALL.
Fucking Women Drivers!!!!!!
(old joke, but that copied from a post on ocuk.co.uk)
If they are tailgating you, you are probably in the wrong lane. Allow them to pass by moving over.
One difference I believe between Germany and the UK is that in that situation the car behind has an option to indicate his intention to get past, UK this is an extended flash of the headlights, in Germany this is done by indicating left.
Also to the GP post you may be able to out brake an ABS enabled car in a straight line. but I doubt if you had to swerve and brake you would be able to out brake/handle an ABS car, as that is what ABS gives the driver, the ability to still steer the car under braking, not the ability to stop quicker. However, you say you have 15 years experience driving that car, so perhaps you have mastered it's characteristics, and can probably do cadence braking when under pressure situation(i.e. when the traffic in front of you stops instantly when you are doing 85+) Many drivers today would do nothing other than stand on the brakes, in a non ABS car locking the wheels and thereby losing all control with the whammy of less effective braking thrown in. In the wet this is motorway pile up material.
Sweet! I do like the autumn season, with all the colour. Only I have to enjoy it on a much smaller scale, here in Scotland. Here are some pictures I could find http://www.rampantscotland.com/flowers/autumn_a.htm
Is Maine known particulary for it's foliage? It seems a rather odd thing to comment on. (By foliage you mean the leaves on the trees turning autumnal?)
you hould have an idea of just how much memory / swap you tend to use, and you must have at one point done something dumb, like open 500 25 meg images or something by mistake, and thought Shit! and checked the mem usage, just for laughs..
Anyway. Ime, I have often used same as ram, but twice, i.e. on 2 different drives. and used the priority option to run them at the same level.
Also, the problem with swap, is that if it does get used alot, then the whole system slows right down. If you have a lot of swap, and a lot in use, your system will be slowed down, but for much much longer.
Here you go, knock yourself out : http://ask.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=00/07/29/1734221&mode=thread

I mean, what the fuck?
T-mobile itself has a hyphenated domain name... : http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/ what's the deal about domain name hyphenation being considered retro?

Slashdot front page has loads of display problems. The days of the couple mm left column overlap seem like the good times in comparison.

lulwut?!
Besides, if someone "could care less, but it would be a chore", then they can still care less and therefore have a degree of care. Damn yanks. :)

I agree. But in your parent post I think you meant 'heavyweight' instead of lightweight. Otherwise, 'lightweight' is redundant. /pedant
The picture of all the kit gives an idea of how crazy this is. Reminds me of teh masterer from this: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=TuiDJvBSsHg purepwnage

This TI processor is the same one used in the pandora box that was on slashdot the other day.

Man, I was gonna read it, but I clicked and then by the time I scrolled down a bit, and a bit, I was too tired and/or bored to continue.
ugh pointless? Just set up a second PC for communication and 'film' the screen of the main PC. Hell, just sit in the same location as your buddy.
