  1. Symptons, not causes on The Future of Game Dev (Except in St. Louis) · · Score: 2

The Big Problem(TM) is that people are confusing the symptons with the causes.

Angry and violent people are often drawn to violent forms of expression, including violent games, movies and music. Some are trying to find a release valve for their feelings, others are trying to legitamize their feelings, and others are just acting out their feelings.

They are trying to treat the fever and not tje infection that caused the fever.

Larry Niven covered the "twich and kill" aspect of humanity quite well in the Known SPace series. His postulate is that because we lack natural weapons, claws and fangs, we create tool-based weapons that make it very easy to kill. This fouls up or surrender reflex and violence gets out of control.

Look at the fights most animals get into. Fights between members of the same species rarely ever end in death or serious injury. The fight is over as soon as one combatant surrenders. The loser walks away and the winner gets the territory/mates/social status/whatever. Humans will often keep escilating the fight until someone gets seriously injured or killed.

  11. Voodoo 1 on The Last Days at 3dfx · · Score: 2

The Voodoo 1 was one of the most ground-breaking pieces of hardware I've ever seen. In an era when a good graphics card would set you back $400.00 (US) and still give you NO 3d acceleration, a day when no one cared about that, the Voodoo 1 came out of nowhere and changed everything.

While it did have the drawback of needing a 2D video card in your system, it did have the advantage that it simply worked with ANY video card you had. Period. It did what it claimed it would do and it did it well.

3DFX really pulled a rabit out of a hat with that card. Many people do not remember that the compitition was either laughable (The Verite or the NV1) or so expensive as to be rediculous. 3DFX created a consumer level 3D card at a price point people would accept.

To do this they concentrated on doing ONLY what was needed. This would later bite them on the ass when they tried to move into the combined 2D/3D card market.

As for GLIDE, well, there wasn't anything else out there. Direct 3D was a joke at the time and OpenGL didn't even run on Windows 95 (the primary gaming OS of teh day). GLIDE wasn't perfect, and it wasn't portable, but it worked.

Looking back on the history of the computer (or any other) industry, we can see that the trail blazers often get left behind by the people that follow their lead, and this is what happened to 3DFX. The dicisions that made their product work in the early days (16-bit color, limited texture size, 3D only, etc...) created a foundation of basic technology that held them back later. The minute NVidea came out with the TNT 3DFX' days were numbered.

I owned a Orchid Righteos 3D, a Canopus Voodoo 1, a Creative Labs Voodoo 2, and a Creative Labs Voodoo 3. They were all great products for their day. There are times that I think about getting my old Voodoo 1 card back from my friend and rebuilding my old gaming rig to play some of my old GLIDE games again.

The Patriot Act allows them tio compell the libraries to give up the evidence with a subpeana (sp?), not a warrant. Which is easier to get and harder to fight? The warrant? No.

A warrant requires some probable cause that a crime is actually being committed. A subpeana (sp?) does not.

Here's the problem: They decise to investigate Joebob Abdula because he fits whatever profile de Jur they want to harras. Now, under the old rules they'd need some sort of probable cause to get a warant to get the records of his library and bookstoor usage. Now, all they need is a subpeana. So they find that Joebon Abdula hasn't read anything more subversive than "Ethyl The Aardvark Gioes Quantity Surveying"? The point is that they are fishing for "suspects" with no probable cause that that person has don anything wrong.

But you live in your fantasy world until the laws get changed in such a way as they directly affect your life for the worse. Bury your head in the sand like a good little consumer and ignore American Brownshirts until it's too late.

Most libraries use one of several specialized software packages, and they can be configured to keep or remove records when the books are returned. The library my wife works at expunges all checkout records the moment ia book is returned in good standing (no fines, etc...). They can't find out who had the book last, or even which patron reported the book damaged and in need of repair.

They do keep track of how many late fees and lost books a patron might have had, but those records are not connected to any books. They even expunge the patron's name from the hold list once they have checked out the book they put the hold on.
