  1. Re:Debian = RH Enterprise on Debian NetBSD for Sparc · · Score: 1

I think it's funny that people always complain about Debian stable being so old when the current packages in the RedHat "Enterprise" distros are using the same versions. RedHat 9 may have the latest Gnome and Xfree86, but their stable, supported, pay-for-update Enterprise editions are still using Gnome 1.4 and Xfree86 4.1.

If you want dependability you use well tested software. On that score Debian was way ahead of RedHat, who didn't figure it out until this year.

Watch out for the cheap copies of Perfect Sessions. They are nasty pirate copies being passed off a new. A better bet is the Amazon exclusive package which contain all the DVDs from the Perfect Session collection without the soundtrack.

Alan Moore had planned to use a group of characters created by Charlton comics for the Watchmen, but once DC (who owned the characters) saw that he meant to kill them off, DC asked Moore to modify them.
Comic Book Artists Magazine has a great interview with Moore about the Charlton characters and how they relate to Watchmen. http://twomorrows.com/comicbookartist/articles/09m oore.html

Are you smoking your NDAs or is this a troll?? I can not see how you would prefer closed source UNIX, especially DEC, over Linux. I'll admit it's been a few years since I've been on a DEC system, but I've found Linux to be just as stable and MUCH more flexible. Perhaps you could enlighten us with a point by point comparison?

  10. They had better listen... on Is Your Elected Official Really Listening? · · Score: 1

Here's the deal. I sent an e-mail about protecting civil liberties in the face of the Sep.11 tragedy to my elected reps in congress:

    Senator Patty Murray
    Senator Maria Cantwell
    Representative Jim McDermott

From Representative Jim McDermott I received no e-mail reply, but I did receive a response in regular mail. This was a form letter concerning racism and America's resolve for justice. It had absolutely no relation to the subject of my original message.

From Senator Patty Murray I received an e-mail expressing concerns about terrorism in America and promising a detailed response via regular mail. That response has not been delivered. Her recent voting record in the Senate however shows that her concerns about civil liberties are not the same as mine.

From Senator Maria Cantwell I received a detailed e-mail response, addressing all of the concerns I mentioned in my e-mail and illustrating what she was currently doing and planned to do about them. Her voting record in the Senate has since followed the in that vein.

When the next election comes around, who do you think won my vote and who lost it? I do not want to communicate with my reps via paper mail, therefore if they or their staff do not read my e-mail and respond in kind I'm not going to vote for them. If my rep sends me a generic response and then votes against my wishes, I will cast my next vote against them. If my rep actually votes as I wish and communicates with me in the manner I choose, I will not only vote for them, but I'll spread the word and try to convince others to do the same.

It may not seem like much power, but it's a damn sight more than many people have.

This is really more of a rant than flame bait, but I'm going to throw this in here just to see who bytes.

Speaking as a Mac user who uses Linux at my job, why should I bother with OS X? IMHO Linux is much more flexible and seems to me to have more of a future in business than Apple or OS X ever will. I was very exited when Apple bought NeXT, but after waiting 5 years, OS X 1.0 just left me cold. Why should I spend time learning about OS X when I could be honing my Linux skills?

This is not a practical joke, it is a calculated part of the M$ FUD campaign against Linux. There is a team of PR people hired by M$ to scour the net and post comments like this on message boards and moderating their post to levels like these. It goes beyond a simple troll and into the realm of guerrilla marketing. I would guess that 95% of the Pro Windows comments you read are from the M$ web marketing team.
