  1. Re:misses the point on How to Turn Your PC into a Mac · · Score: 1

Actually, I did a modified version of this a few months back before I picked up a Macbook. The real reason I was interested was because of the functionality the dock offered--I was able to put all my ex-"quick launch" icons into a separate area, thereby freeing up a huge amount of space on my taskbar. This allowed many more windows to be open before the horrible autostacking feature came into play.

I agree with what you're saying about it not really being anything like OS X. However, there are still some (relatively minor) usability enhancements you can gain from this type of modification, which in some cases make it well worth the few megs of ram required to run the fake dock program.

  4. Will this help in cases of bad lag? on 'Killer' Network Card Actually Reduces Latency · · Score: 1

So, according to TFA, this card is supposed to reduce lag/latency. The big question for me is this: will it make any difference if the server you're trying to play on is having trouble? I know that 90% of the lag I get is caused by low bandwidth on the server side, not the NIC on my end. I know that, in theory, this reduces the time it takes to send/receive the packets on your end, but in cases where you have (noticeable) lag in the first place, it shouldn't make much difference unless it can somehow reduce the size of the packets or somehow bump your packets up on the server list. I guess that you'll be slightly ahead of the competition even in cases of bad lag, but when you have very bad lag to the point where the other players are jumping around the screen, I see no reason why this would help you.
Maybe as a card to help you out on already very expensive/fast servers, but for most servers you play on every day this won't help you.
Of course, the people who play on "normal" servers aren't the target market anyway; this card is for the elites who have private servers set up for them and their elite buddies.

So, according to this, electric cars can go a lot further than they could before. But the big problem is still there: the electricity doesn't just come out of nowhere. It has to be generated, and at the moment ~70% of elecricity generation comes from fossile fueles. If there where refueling stations that where entirely solar powered, then this would make some sense. But if the electricity was just coming from the local energy company, it makes no more sense than just using good old gasoline.

So they're planning to use relatively untested supposedly "non-lethal" weapons for crowd control? Well, while they're at it, why don't they set off some mini nukes nearby to test the effects of radiation on large numbers of people? I know I'm repeating what many others have said here, but for one thing there is no such thing as a "non-lethal" weapon. It may not be lethal the first time, but who knows what will happen if someone is repeatedly shot with it? How do they know that all people will react to these the same way? They say that some of these weapons will also be used to disable electronics. Won't that also disable a pacemaker? Or an inculin pump? I would think this was totally immoral and illegal even if they where using it in Iraq. Using it here makes even less sense to me than that. I guess to them, the war on terror really does start at home.

  9. Opera? on New Web Browser Leaves No Footprints · · Score: 0

I can already do all this using Opera. Just set it to store 0 pages in the history, a 0 mb cache, etc. and you don't even NEED this thing. Also, I know this has already been said, but Browzar seems to be based on IE, so it can't be anywhere near as secure as Opera. Browzer seems to have trouble with maximizing on my computer, and the close, minimize, and maximize buttons end up hidden under my start menu (my start menu is on the top.) Opera also has a hide to taskbar shortcut (ctrl-h).
The only real use I can see for this is if you're at someone else's computer, and need a quick and easy way to browse the 'net without them knowing about it.
Needless to say, Opera also has all these other nice features (such as tabbed browsing, integrated bittorent client, etc.) which are sadly lacking in Browzar.

Unless some guidelines are set up about how the colonization of space will work, we could end up with entire planets owned by a single entity.
Of course, this could be a good thing, if it goes the way the colonization of America did, with planets instead of large chunks of land. But if I remember correctly, that was more religious groups than corporations, which wouldn't happen now due to the huge expense of space travel, and the obstacles they will find in space.

As for all the Apple notebooks now being widescreen, I don't know about everyone else, but I'm going to miss the good old days of non-widescreen notebooks. The only real differences I see is that this has the ability to not just lock the remote user out, but to make your actions invisible. Also, the screenshot shows that you can manage multiple computers at once. Also, what if you install some piece of software, and part of the license agreement that you didn't read is that they can come into your computer and steal all your passwords, credit card numbers, etc? That could make what is currently spyware legal, as long as they say what their gonna do in the license agreement. The only solution I see is to read all those license agreements...
