...Only because it is the only one I ever saw, based on viral ability alone it wins
Speaking of hot flicks, I think that's a pretty good description of their server right about now.
Mozilla presumably needs all the funding they can get. Where are they getting the money to pay for a site like this?
Wheee! Almost peed my pants. Played it over and over, this is funny on many levels, reminds me of the old Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons, where little kids laughed, but there is an adult element that is hilarious.
As far as being effective for general advertising, I'm not sure... It may succeed on the level of getting people talking about it, "Do you GET that new Firefox commercial", or not. It's a bit of a wink and a nod to the tech demographic (taunting especially Microsoft and Netscape).
If I were making a SAFE choice for mass consumption, I'd probably go with the "Give me the Soap". Simple, mass appeal, cute, cuddly, with a clearly stated message. If I had some extra money, I'd produce and run both. If I had money to burn, I'd definitely do the Wheeee! just for fun.
Good job to all winners.
The site is down already... To google video, huzzah!

And the loser is...

I looked all over for mirrors of the two missing videos. Couldn't find any working ones, sorry.
"Connection to database could not be made." Great post. You'd think that when people submit stuff like this they'd think ahead and provide mirror links...
I watched them all, and was completely underwhelmed. For one thing, they were obviously all the same. Secondly though, black text on a white background saying 'Connection to database could not be made.' just isn't funny, and doesn't make me want to use FireFox. It's also stretching the definition of 'video' too. Yes, technically it was something that was seen, and therefore video, but in common usage 'video' implies moving pictures.

Put the design skills behind This is Hot with the Wheee! concept and you got a real winner.
Since the site is a pile of smoldering wreckage, let's talk about something else: the web. Specifically, when did you start needed a database to serve up five static files?
Discuss amongst yourselves.
mod parent down, karma whore, this post had all the mirrors long before this troll account did.
kinda fun
wiiiiiiii!!
Opinions:
surfer: like, ya, what?
whee!: "heh", but "shut UP" voice not authoritative enough.
eskimos: cute
soap: fix the ugly animation of the logo appearing as the washer lid shuts
firefox fever: explorer was kind of funny. only in the slashdot-funny sense, where you don't laugh, or smile, but sort of recognize that someone else might possibly find it funny.
WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
I can't wait to see this response to every IE post on slashdot.
At the time I went to post, the other post wasn't visible yet, slashdot takes a couple minutes to update after posts are made.
Too bad Whee! was a winner. They'll have a hell of a time getting it past Nintendo now.
;)
Maybe Microsoft will hire Gill for their Xbox campaign?
1. Daredevil. What's this about? Nice editing, pretty sweet cinematography (if extremely dark due to heavy use of solar silhouetting). Nice little homily about the surfing ethic. And the kid skateboarding with the surfboard is cool too. But there's no surfing in it. There's skateboarding. Looks too cold to surf. And too dark. Confused.
2. This is hot. Predictable. I liked the touch with the fish. Too bad it didn't hold that note.
3. Wheee! Cute, but the payoff is lame. Firefox just wants to sleep? Confused again.
4. Get the Soap. Dumb. No text, sub- or otherwise, to indicate why the kids think washing gets rid of viruses and spyware. Only the soap-on-the-lens thing keeps it from being dead last. Oh, and the fact that this one could never be anything but:
5. Fox Fever. Ultra-dumb. Lame beyond words. Everything that's wrong about the vox populi artistic movement. How did this hunk of shit get out of the in-box, much less into this list?
That's muh rulin'. - Judge R. Bean
Saw them all through the Google Cache. (I can't function without the Add Mirrors Greasemonkey Script which IMHO is way better than the Slashdotter Extension.)
Anyway, I thought "This is hot" blew all the others away. High production value. Gets some of the firefox message across to a mass audience without getting buried in all the product details. Most of the others will just leave people confused.

I watched them and definitely Get Me The Soap is the best. The idea of washing the computer to get rid of viruses if funny, only because kids are so litereal now. If I was to see that on TV I would be kinda confused as to what firefox is, because, IMO, the average user just uses IE because they don't know about others, except maybe Netscape. The only thing I would add is on the GetFireFox.com logo @ the end put Get FireFox Interenet Browser to clarify what it is.
That which does not kill me only postpones the inevitable.

I see you've played mirror - spooney before
Wouldn't it be far more daredevil-ish to use a browser that ISN'T Firefox???
Funniest by far in my opinion was "Wheeee!". However, I didn't really see how it did anything to promote Firefox other than by bringing opinion to it. Maybe it was something to the effect of "all the other browsers will annoy you, but Firefox won't." I don't know. Made me laugh though and I watched it multiple times.
Not quite sure why "DareDevil" made it in there. Didn't really find it funny or informative, but it was well put together I guess. However, it did nothing to really promote firefox except for a very brief text message at the end. Again, well put together, but all but completely irrelevant to firefox.
"Give Me the Soap". Meh, mediocre. I guess it gets the job done and we all know that cute kids doing dumb things make up all chuckle slightly and say "ahhhhh", but just didn't seem to do anything for me...
"This is Hot" did a good job bringing out some of the plusses to firefox and didn't even need to resort to the bashing of other browsers! Kudos for that. Also, nicely animated. Very well put together piece. For those of you who claim that it doesn't make sense, how many commercials do you see on TV that make sense? Seriously, give it a break.
I think that the clear winner in my mind though is "Fox Fever". This puts together humor and information in one short and very well done piece of work. While not as funny as "Wheee!" it still provided me with a smile and a slight chuckle. More than I managed for pretty much everything but "Wheee!". Tacked onto that we had a commercial that points out the clean browsing that you get with firefox. Even the bashing of IE was done more of less tactfully.
OK, now that all that is out of the way, I would like to point out that I didn't see any of the other submissions. I only viewed the winners. Had I seen then, perhaps I would be more upset about who made the final cuts. Then again, I might like them all the more because the other attempts were far worse. I would like to say "good job" to any participants though. You are obviously far less lazy than me and I applaud that. Keep up the good work.
It's saying "Connection to database cannot be made." Does that mean that firefoxflicks.com got slashdotted?! And half of slashdot users use firefox too!
This is not a sig. This is a llama-duck. Quack.
OK, am I the only one that thinks they all suck? "Hot" is the only one that's at least tolerable. The rest have no actual bearing on what they're trying to advertise, or are so campy as to be useless.
Sorry, but, why?

What is up with all this YouTube Flash garbage, and Google Video needing download of some software in order to be able to play a video? Why can't people just post frickin' MPEGs???
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-803097827 6585778440&q=daredevil&pl=true
It was one of the first three out there, and it reminds me so much of real IE users: much ado about being incompetent and using and incompetent browser. The title says it all.
For fuck sakes, this is why I hate comments on Slashdot - most of the time the moderation is pretty good, until something about Microsoft comes up.
Why can't anyone take any FireFox criticism? You'd think the Parent said "Firefox 'r dumb. IE is teh pwn". He critiqued the videos - in a nice, defined manor.
What's good about the videos:
Daredevil - nice cinematography, good surf-surf analogy, kind of touching. Touches on what Firefox does.
This Is Hot - Great animation, really slick presentation. Clearly states what Firefox is and what it does.
Whee! - Funny in a really juvenile way.
Get the Soap - Kind of cute.
Fox Fever - Funny in a crocodile-hunter-ripoff kind of way. Refers to a few things Firefox does.
What's bad about the videos:
They're all really lame. Mediocre at best. 'That Is Hot' and 'Daredevil' have great execution - but nothing to execute. There's no substance. None of the "flicks" have anything to really say.
'Whee!' is actually quite insulting. The other browsers are retarded? That's classy. 'Fox Fever' was passable until the end when the 'explorer' showed up and was "defeated". What a cheap shot. Again, really classy. Attacking IE without any qualifiers is insulting to both Microsoft and users of both FF and IE (and Safari and Netscape), as well as Firefox - there ARE reasons why Firefox is better than IE, but they aren't mentioned.
'Get the soap' and 'Whee!' don't even try to explain what Firefox is. Daredevil talks about "browsing" but that's about it. 'Fox Fever' is a bit better, but relies on "go to getfirefox.com for more info". 'This Is Hot' explains pretty well what Firefox does (1 out of 5 ain't bad).
Again, I think it's important to remember that Firefox is better than IE, but not by the leaps and bounds fanboys say it is.
"It's faster" >> well, sometimes. Sometimes it's slower. It's a crap-shoot really. And it's never that much faster.
"It's safer" >> yes it is, but not much safer (remember that URL faking exploit?) and most of it's "security" comes from active-x being turned off (which you can do in IE too). And remember: Open source = increased risk.
"Tabs, extentions, and skins provide a better user experience" >> yes! I've got a few really nice extensions I just can't imagine living without (mmm egg timer). But it's important to note that IE7 will include these exact features too.
Remember kids: if you think a poster is a troll because they disagree with you - you might be a troll.

I have afollowing concern about the name of the browser in regards to international marketing:
In Chinese and Russian folklore, fox is an cunny evil treacherous animal. Given, tech community which does not care much about it already accepted firefox, but what about the general populace (target of the commercial number 5)? Does anybody care about folklore?

I really think "This is hot!" was the best one. Professional, great ending, lits the features, the list goes on.
Too bad Daredevil won. When I first viewed that, I had to watch it again and then even look at the comments to understand it.

We're working on it. In the mean time, you can see many of the flicks here and the winners here:
First Place - "Daredevil"
Second Place - "Wheee!"
Third Place - "Fox Fever"
Honorable Mention - "This is Hot"
Honorable Mention - "Give Me the Soap"

Youtube has horrid video quality, in my opinion.
Anyways for "This is Hot" the actual producer of the video is a Minneapolis-based video house called MAKE (they have done a ton of commercials you have probably seen if you are in the US.
Anyways, their hosted version is of better quality than the ones of the FirefoxFlicks site. Check it Out (note: Will try to re size your browser)

I just found it randomly browsing on Google Video for firefox flicks:0 1206353123
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-22437165
It doesn't tell much about FF features, like "This is Hot" does (which is useful IMO). But OTOH the winning DareDavil is also rather focused on experience than screenshots and features. Similarily it has great editing and a nice music.
As opposed to DareDevil I think it's easier to understand -- the surfing girl uses "like" almost every second word.
Seems the flicks idea is catching on, a group is doing it for t-shirts: http://foxytee.com/www.foxytee.com
Did you install the QuickTime plug-in into your Firefox browser?
Judging from your comments, I don't think that you own this electronic box called a television. Yes sir, a television can be used to watch shows and movies and many ads on random products such as Preparation H and McDonalds.
Let's analyse your analysis
1. There's skateboarding but no surfing and you're confused? If you ask me, skateboarding is surfing on dry land. It just happens that some people took it to the extreme and make crazy moves with it but that ain't any different from surfers. Right, that and surfers don't look like emos.
2. Agreed but, from all the things that you could of enjoyed, you liked the fish that appeared for a split second? It was neat I agree but the zoomout at the end of the firefox was nice too and it's safe to say I think that many people also liked the animation behind that.
3. Payoff is lame? What about almost all those ads on TV out there where you see a random old man and women sit on a chair and then a picture of a doctor appears where he says "You too can live a life like this. Ask your doctor about Progrow today. With the new formula, anyone can benefit from it. Side effects may include diarrhea, sexual desire to fuck anything that walks and a bloody feces. Ask your doctor Today!
Ok So here we have an ad of some announcer telling you to get information about a pill which you still don't have a damn clue what it is suppose to fight. Heck, I say we mind as well have a doctor on a green background tell us "Are you suffering from erectile difficulties? If yes, ask your doctor if Progrow is right for you" And end it there. We get it, it's not lame and it's direct but noo, lets have a picture of a green yard with an old men putting butter on his bread and make the listener guess what it's about
Same thing here with Weeeeee, except the Firefox ad is more clear if you ask me. Firefox wasn't carried away and just sticks to his job.
4. Dude, it's kids. It's suppose to be cute cause they're not sure how to solve the problem. It's like when you tell a kid that he has a dirty mouth cause he said cunt but the mouth isn't really dirty. Maybe it's something like this?
5. Ultra-dumb? Well then what do you say about again, those tv ads where people look so frickin exicted on a product as simple and trivial as a pack of gum? Or how about Sunny D where all the kids rejoice and they're like YEAH!! or even better, the ad where a dumbass rolls his new jacket on a newly painted bench and then he's points his Mentos and then the guy's like MENTOS, THE FRESHMAKER! I challenge anyone to react like these guys after consuming candy.
Where I'm getting at with all of this? There are a shitload of ads out there. That's all... Your analysis could apply to at least 50% of ads on TV today. Just change "Firefox" with "Viagra" and so on.
And I don't mean terrible in a "ha ha make fun of Microsoft" way. I mean terrible period. :P Who thought that a highly irritating ad would be a good idea?
"It's faster" >> well, sometimes. Sometimes it's slower. It's a crap-shoot really. And it's never that much faster.
What about Intel Ads showing its superiority in the market. Are they really that faster than AMD in fields where AMD is the clear winner? Or how about ads where you see a guy running real fast because he's got new shoes.
Ads are suppose to be clear about the product and IMHO they should give some accurate information but I don't see that happening in today's ads. The goal of ads today is to blindly sell products. McDonalds is healthy? Yeah, ok there Sherlock.
Seriously guys, it isn't trolling to critisize something. They all sucked - really.'This Is Hot' was the only one to actually explain what Firefox is.

Am I the only one that has problem hearing the girl in Daredevil? Hopefully they fix that for the actual ad or no one's going to know what the hell the ad was about
I watched the first place winner, "Daredevil" and frankly, I was confused. Besides the small text at the end, there was no mention of Firefox at all. From the perspective of an average observer, I just didn't get it.
I also disliked "Wee" (however it is spelt). It sunk down to demeaning other browsers rather then explaining and showcasing Firefox's abilities. The browser should rely on its merits, not the shortfalls of other browsers.
I loved "This is Hot". The animation was well done, and professional. The features of firefox were briefly explained, and a nice shiny logo with lots of flash was displayed at the end. In my opinion, this is clearly the winner.
The moment the IE explosion came up, my Firefox crashed.
I've seen two comments with links to videos that didn't win, and they both beat the crap out of 3 of the winners.
- Weeee! is just stupid.
- Give me the soap is playing off of the typical "children are stupid" idea. I hate anyone that tries to use that idea in their commercial.
- daredevil just didn't have anything to do with FireFox in the first place, it could have been advertising anything if it didn't have the FireFox logo at the end.
I think any two or three people in their high school film class simply screwing around with the camera could have made a better video than these.
Fox fever and this is hot were pretty well done though, congratulations to them.
-1 disagree is not a modifier for a reason. -1 troll, flaimbait, redundant, overrated are NOT acceptable substitutes.
This contest was more of a joke than the jokes in the SNL that's on right now... Here
...sorry if that was a bit confusing
They got rid of there blog(Here) after a lot of the entrants posted "comments" questioning what happened to it. Read the comments on that page to see the problems but here's a sum up of what the general story is:
Facts:
-Before I say anything about the videos this is how the contest was to be done (Herel)1) Concept (30%); 2) Production Quality (30%); 3) Script/Screenplay (20%); 4) Use of Firefox Logo, Name, or Tagline (10%); 5) Jingle or Soundtrack (10%). The winners were all in the first 20% of the videos posted. Only around 30% of the ads have been posted.
-The winner of the competition "Daredevil" was posted online Apr. 11th on the firefoxflicks.com website...the contest ended Apr. 14th. This ad incorporates ALMOST NONE of the guidelines set forth other than the fact that she actually uses a browser. (And it's a clear of the recent coca-cola and American express ads... that's more of a rumor though but you decide for yourself)
-"Wheee!" was in complete denial of the FAQ that they posted (specifically Here) that said that other logos could not be used without permission and yet there goes IE, Netscape and Safari(not to mention the TOS on those logos on there websites(which can also includes modifying the logos in any way))
-"Fox Fever" had no video production quality other than that is was trying to be cheesy which can be argued to have not fallen under the scoring system set forth by the rules.
-"This is Hot" deserved to win more than an honorable mention. It fit the "rules" set forth perfectly and has a very high production quality that (in my opinion) can take on some super bowl commercials.
-"Give Me the Soap" was cute and could fit the rules perfectly.
-It starts to appear that the actual "winners" were not exactly following the rules and guidelines of the contest and the two honorable mentions fit it perfectly (which is probably why there were 2 "honorable mentions" because there wasn't any mention that there was going to be).
Rumors:
-I'll quote myself for the first "rumor":
"the only concern I have about the judging is that the 5 winners were among the first 25% up... I'm not to good at stat but doesn't that mean the odds of that happening unintentionally (5 hits within 25%) 1 in 1024(4^5) (or one could even argue 20% (5^5: 1 in 3125))? If the first ones up were a "cross-section" as noted earlier doesn't that imply that they weren't the best of the best?
"# Asa(one of the firefoxflicks staff Says:
April 25th, 2006 at 8:16 am
cleancut, I don't think it was purely our idea of "the 50 best ones". We posted what we thought was a good cross-section of ads, from humorous to serious and everything in between. We certainly tried to launch the site and build early momentum by highlighting a set of ads that we thought would be compelling and entertaining to a broad audience.
- A
" "
-NONE of the judges ever said a word about the contest ANYWHERE. try googling one the famous "judges" names and firefoxflicks and the only page that will come up is that the list of them on firefoxflicks.com. This lead to ALOT of speculation that some of the videos (Wheeeeeeeee) were picked because of the instant popularity when they were put on the site and not by market viability (or the "rules"). Also all of the judges apparently viewed all 2.5 hours of commercials in LA over 5 days even though they are all working on movies in various parts of the world. But that's probably because the firefoxflicks team forced them to this deadline to be at the SF film fest which wasn't the original plan.
-The firefoxflicks team will never be able to use some of the ads (Wheeee
wouldn't it be nice if there is something like this for the next ubuntu build ?

UPDATE directly from Jason: I know a lot of folks are coming here from DIGG and other memetrackers. The $72M someone told me at BarCampLA and I have no idea if that is true or not. If you reblog this (or report it) please make sure you make that clear.
Even though CNN and other sites are saying 72, 73 Million they all link to Jason's blog and he admits that it's just a rumor....
Congratulations, you made my Firefox crash. Haven't seen that for ages.
I guess I can't read the dialog to see what it says (not to mention that it's not a vanilla Windows environment, so most people won't even recognize it's IE right away), but can't a javascripted dialog pop up again and again and again ad nauseum in Firefox just as well? Be it with a timer event, or by means of an onLeave() cancelling the leave, etc. ?
Another site that does not provide download links for the video files and assumes that everyone has the necessary plugin. No- there are people who cannot have the plugin (because of their OS) or do not want to install it and prefer to use seperate viewer programs to view videos. Therefore, there should be a download link for each video file.
Sad to see that even this site does not follow that simple rule. Needless to say that there is no contact address on the site to reach those responsible for the blunder.
In a word: they suck.
With all this large scale promoting of Firefox, some how people seem to forgot the facts and just start lying to make their points.

Firefox is not lighter or faster than IE. This is a confusion created by the fact that is it is lighter than the Mozilla suite.
Firefox still has security issues, the firefox people seem to be pretty good at patching rather quickly, but I still won't say that Firefox is 'safe'.
The advertising of a 'pop-up blocker' is bizaar, it's not a feature, it's the removal of a feature.
check it out: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/SupportCD/FirefoxMy
Don't get me wrong, Firefox is still the best of the meger crap that is the web browser market, but that's no reason to lie to people.
- Jesse McNelis
...and that is all I have to say about that.
http://jessta.id.au
"one of them showed FF's tabs, which amazes me because that is one of the easiest ways to get somebody to switch from IE."
It won't be when IE7 comes out.
Ironically I managed to crash Firefox by downloading all those links in seperate tabs and then playing one while the others are still loading.
The advertising of a 'pop-up blocker' is bizaar, it's not a feature, it's the removal of a feature.
If you really want popups, turn the popup blocker off. It's not hidden away in some obscure setting in about:config, it's the first option in the Content settings tab!
Edit->Preferences->Content->[ ] Block Popup Windows
Also when it hides a popup you get a message telling you about it and an easy way to show it.
I'll probably be modded down for this...
Daredevil
Wheee!
Fox Fever
This is hot
Give me the soap
Now compare these commercials to what's on TV. I find these more entertaining and even though maybe they'll get just about as annoying, they have a lot more thought than your average ad, certainly more than any that has to do with computer software. This is the best computer software ad out there, and is certainly going to fare well against other ads currently running on TV!
Twinstiq, game news
Everyone here seems to be making their opinions known on their fav videos, but no one is discussing what these will be used for.
Some of these ads have high production value and as good or are better ads that I have seen on TV. Are these any plans to try and get some of these spots on prime-time? Is any wealthy donor like IBM/Google/Shuttleworth/Cuban going to pony up the cash for this?
Heck I could even see benefits to RedHat or Novell funding such an ad campaign. Anything that reduces IE's marketshare lowers the barrier to entry for other operating systems.
Did anyone even watch the ad?
One the the first sentences she says is "I have always liked things fast"
That's the whole point. Jesus, I thought this was slashdot?
Oh, and to the GP - it's "dark" because it is *sunrise*. Just look at the sky. Sunrise is the best time to surf, any surfer knows this.
Google Video does not require you to download anything (except for possibly a Flash plugin, of course) to watch the videos. The Google Video Player is only needed in case you wish to download the video for offline view.
My personal favorites were
This is hot, Fox Fever, Infinite, and of course Wheee!
But with only a couple of exceptions I thought they were all very good and I think they should all be shown on TV.
Perhaps IFC could have a spot where they show all of the Firefox Flicks back to back? If TechTV were still alive (damn you evil comcast!) I know they would have gladly done something like that.
Well, I guess not many Linux people are going to be watching those movies.
Come to think of it, neither will I. Not since quick time changed from being a crappy media player into a crappy media player with a big helping of invade-your-entire-machine-and-redirect-every-poss ible-file-association-with-no-escape-ware.
No sig today...
I don't get the point of ths one and would give it one star.
After thinking about it, it seemed to be a child's association game:
What sound do you think of when you see this picture? (logo)
Given that, some possible outcomes:
- Explorer icon: whee (I'm having fun, even as an idiot)
- Netscape icon: nyaa nyaa (I'm playing keep-away, security)
- Safari icon: phhhht (I think I'm better than you)
- Firefox icon: (silence) (What sound goes here?)
Since the Fox's backside faces viewer, sound could be:
- Firefox icon: fart (I stink)
- Firefox icon: wizz? (I need cleanup)
- Firefox icon: Shut-up! (I'm your pissed-off parent in the front seat of the car.)
All are negative associations for Firefox.
Another sound association for the 'e' might be
'eeek!'
The whole tone is negative advertising, which turns off viewers from even thinking about the product. Parents are turned off from the beginning by the bratty kids, and kids are turned off at the end by the pissed-off parent. I'd switch the channel right away.
Are we sure the votes haven't been rigged/flooded so far?
5. Wheee!
Worst. Promo. Ever. This is the most introvert commercial I've seen in ages. It will communicate to noone that's not already well aware. It doesn't present any useful information.
4. Fox Fever
Good, cheesy, but as a promo? I think it fails to communicate that this is a browser, not a security product.
3. Give me the the soap
More "family friendly" than Fox Fever, but again I feel it's being communicated as a security product.
2. DareDevil
Excellent "lifestyle" ad. I just don't think that is what Firefox needs.
1. This is Hot
Communicated that Firefox is a browser, with no pop-ups and faster. Not a spectacular delivery, but IMO well made and got the point across.
