This is bad. On the other hand, I don't think I've ever done a Move in my life. If it's going to another device I copy it, then delete it myself.
Obviously there are situations where a move is much preferred, but I think most people would never encounter this bug. I agree. But then again, we aren't "most people." Thankfully, IIRC (I know it's true in Windows) the default operation between volumes is always a copy (via "click and drag"), and you are forced to specifically request a move (cut-paste or holding down a modifier key). However, a lot of people I know use the "cut-paste" option so I could see this problem coming up a lot (if, of course, more people at work used Macs:)
the #1 artist downloaded is "The Apples in Stereo." Actually, I think that's because the free download you get with Amazon's downloader is a song by them ("Energy"). In terms of most popular download, ok, I think that might be right. But in terms of songs actually purchased, well...
1. Yes, I read the standard on a regular basis. Javac has many bugs, netbeans compiler has many more. What? I've been using Netbeans for a year or so now, and it uses the javac compiler. What do you mean by "netbeans compiler"?
I agree that Latex is arcane; I prefer a good word processor over Latex for those reasons mentioned: WYSIWYG, precise placement of figures, etc. Equation editing, as of Word 2007, is, dare I say it, very good and doable completely via keyboard.
Word can't number references, figures, and tables correctly. You obviously don't know how to use those features properly. I'm not saying it's the easiest thing in the world (there is a learning curve involved), but having used Word for many technical papers over the last couple of years it's not only possible but becomes easier to do with experience. No more manual numbering of stuff...
From my experience, the email and web hosting are two most important offerings. Email: I echo offering IMAP access (encrypted, of course) as well as POP3 access. When you say "Web Access", do you mean to the email? That's important.
Ask students for other ideas. I get the feeling that many students (esp. those in non-technical fields) may not want or need much more than that. That's from my POV as an engineer having worked with many non-techies in the past. Besides the email access, the most popular use of IT services was for checking grades, registering for classes, etc., which is now all done eletronically.
Also, check out other university web sites for information and what they offer.
We can't just blame technology for the trends. There are many factors that, IMHO, seem to be going into this.
Growing up in my hometown 5-10 years ago, I remember kids being outside all the time, playing whatever, chasing each other around. I loved playing street hockey with my friends, for example. However, you go back now, and even on the most beautiful spring day the neighborhood is practically devoid of kids just playing outside (organized sports are still popular, or course, but I mean jusy *play*). Instead, most of them are inside watching TV, playing video games, or, as is more and more the case these days, they are simply trying to do everything and anything to get into a good college (that's put simply of course, but that seems to be the gist of it). Kids aren't allowed to be kids anymore, due to pressure to do everything, due to media influence, etc. "Playing" seems to be considered a waste of time.
Another thing I've noticed is fear in the parents. I used to play outside and get hurt, dig around, get sick, etc. My parents would keep an eye on me but they didn't stop me from playing.
I must agree. After mistakenly buying a flash drive with a U3 chip, I've sworn never to go back. I've had very similar issues using these drives in work computers.
Another issue: at least on the flash drive I bought, the 1 GB is the sum of the writable part of the drive AND the practically unusable U3 partition! ARG...
Otterbox http://www.otterbox.com/ has recently released a laptop case. I've heard great things about Otterbox's products in the past, and might be worth checking out. Check out the review: http://www.techfear.com/articles/2006/7/otterbox_l aptop_case.shtml
Supplies are still limited on their medium sized case and they're only considering producing a smaller and larger sized case.
This has gotten me thinking about protecting my laptop for an upcoming trip...
Unfortunately, as soon as amazon decided to stop selling a book, or for whatever reason, the listing will be gone.
It seems to me that Amazon does keep books that are no longer being sold (e.g. "out-of-print") in it's database. I have looked for information on a lot of older scientific texts on Amazon and I have yet to find a book that hasn't been listed on Amazon, even those that aren't being sold anymore. Might not have, for example, a book image displayed, but it'll be there. Of course, this doesn't mean that one day Amazon could decide to drop all out-of-date listings, but for now...

Great site; one of the first I check out (along with NY Times). Good tips for everyday life to help increase productivity and whatnot.
Check it out: http://www.lifehacker.com/
Hate to be pedantic, but the launch time is 8:38 p.m. EDT (Eastern Daylight Time), not EST (Eastern Standard Time).

Anyway, just my 2 cents...Make sure you have a backup! :)
This of course begs the question: WHY??
To uninstall, check out FAQ #6 @ http://www.u3.com/support/default.aspx
Awesome! I didn't know that this existed, and now I can use my U3 flash drive with impunity :)

The Inspiron E1705 and the Inspiron 9400 have them (the laptops were the first to get them)
