A prime example would be me buying carpet from Interface. I would buy carpet from them even were it twice the price of the nearest competitor. I would do this because I am loyal to their ideals. I would change brand only if their fundamental philosophy changed.

And I would fire you in a second for costing the company money with your irrational ideals. Goodbye.

They actually think its better to distort the music to make it louder (and subsequentially have the listener turn his volume down) than to master at appropiate levels and allow the listener the luxury of turning the volume up as they see fit.

Ahoy as well, IANAL either, but from what I have read the compatility clauses cover reverse engineering only. You are still not allowed to strip the protection off the media.

Again, this post needs a -1 WRONG mod. regular cds do not have DRM on them, are not "protected" and it is NOT a violation of any (US american) law to platform shift the media contained therein. The part of the DRM equation that makes things illegal is the clause in the DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) that says it is illegal to circumvent copyright protection. That would mean it is now a CRIMINAL offense (Felony to boot) to DECRYPT copyrighted works or to REMOVE DRM from any copyrighted works. Unless of course, you have permission from the copyright owner.

Where the hell is my damn -1 WRONG modifier? ANY attempt to circumvent the WEAKEST of encryption (css ispretty freaking weak) without the consent of the copyright holder is a criminal offense in the USA. And just to make matters totally STUPID, its a felony to boot. Thank you DMCA.

Your choice to use a Linux box doesn't give you the right to circumvent the law.
Actually, yes it does. Copyright law specifically allows for reverse engineering for the purposes of compatibility. Well, it does up to the point where you need to break encryption to achieve that compatibility... then suddenly its a felony to even talk about it. and no, it doesn't matter how weak the encryption is.
DRM is not whats borked. The DMCA that encourages it is whats borked.

You could easily say the same for extracting oil from under sheetrock under an ocean. But we do that anyways. Its not the startup cost that matters, its the ROI. But in this case, I don't think with our current technology, anyone would see it as profitable. However, if we find something worth mining, you can bet the technology will get developed, and then it will be profitable.

I absolutely abhor seeing people try to correct intelligent usage of that phrase. Maybe at one time it meant what you WANT it to mean, but that original meaning is stupid, and noone cares. Language is the art of communicating, NOT of memorizing. If a group of words makes more sense in one definition than another, then guess what? It just got redefined.

In a conversation concerning the requirement of systems to use standards in order to be conisidered acceptable, it helps to not counter your entire culture by declaring unilaterally that you choose to ignore your own mandated standards.
