  1. It's management and leadership on Do Non-Technical Managers Add Value? · · Score: 1

Lots of discussion about "shielding", "protecting" etc. Good stuff, but don't forget that being in a management position also means being a leader, and leaders need to challenge their teams to reach higher (quality, productivity, etc). and accomplish more. New managers out there shouldn't lose sight of this. It's very important. Source: IT VP.

  2. Re:lawmakers on Paper Companies' Windfall of Unintended Consequences · · Score: 1

Irrelevant! I am differentiating between the letter of the law and the spirit of the law. You're a typical anti-corporate insect. You object to applying the same argument against individuals. The principle is the same. How does the argument change if the Prius costs is less than the credit? Are the "previously bike-riding individuals" scumbags then?

  3. Re:lawmakers on Paper Companies' Windfall of Unintended Consequences · · Score: 2, Insightful

It's not perverted; nor is it malfeasant. If you had a more fuel efficient form of transportation, say a bike or motorcycle, or your feet, and bought a new car eligible for a tax credit, and accepted the tax credit, you'd be doing the same thing. I'd be less interested in this and more interested in illuminating the *intended* tax breaks that we perceive as unethical. Congress needs some sunlight (and a good disinfectant).

  4. This is win/win for Amazon (prediction) on Amazon Caves On Kindle 2 Text-To-Speech · · Score: 2, Interesting

I believe what will ultimately happen is that they'll have two tiers of Kindle books - one with audio disabled, at the current price; and one with audio enabled, which will cost more. Amazon wins because they generate more profit; and the Author's Guild wins because they can claim they're working for their constituency. In the end, it's only you and me that gets the shaft.

  5. Publisher's role now and in the future on Amazon Caves On Kindle 2 Text-To-Speech · · Score: 1

The following is more a question to prompt discussion than an answer: without paper, what is the publisher publishing? Do they still get the same % cut? Are they attempting to reduce Kindle's attractiveness because they know in the end, without paper, authors like Stephen King and other popular (and not so popular authors) can self-publish, removing the publishers from the picture entirely? It seems to me that once you eliminate the paper, the publisher's value-add (and power) is significantly reduced.

You are forgetting that standard of living and wages are closely linked. I do not want our country to suffer while waiting every other homo sapien to achieve home + 2.5 cars.

  8. CONGRESS! on Reporter Phone Records Being Used to Find Leaks · · Score: 1

I love Slashdot, but for the love of God don't spend more than 5 minutes here on this subject unless you've already sent correspondence to Congress demanding action on this issue. They have ability to impact this situation, and impacting their re-election chances will provide the necessary impetus. Thank you.

  9. Bull on Ars Technica Reviews the MacBook · · Score: 1

Interesting analysis, but I disagree. The cost differential between a, say, 15 and 30 GB drive is marginal, probably like $10, so why would Apple even bother? That's the reason why they have jump from 4 to 30 - NVRAM to HDD - availability and pricing of components.

  10. Re:naive on Has World Oil Production Passed Its Peak? · · Score: 1

I believe this is not yet proven. They can heat up the shale to extract oil efficiently; what they cannot yet do efficiently is create the frozen perimeter around the extraction site. Promising, but not a foregone conclusion.

Stop buying their movies and/or cds and they will feel the pain. It will start with reduced revenues, and ultimately result in their disintermediation as the music creators see there's more money to be made going solo.

  12. Re:Good move for the wrong reasons. on Hopes Rise for RIM · · Score: 1

I think it's bullshit that Congress is only getting involved now, and the method in which they're doing it. Influencing the uspto in this manner is bush league and consistent with the abuse of power we have seen. The citizenry needs to ensure that congress is acting above board and in our best interests. If ip rights are too strong - change the law. Congress, you can't have it both ways. If you want strong ip, then great, but in that event NTP wins, not RIM. Loosen the ip restrictions and every other tech company would cry foul - and congress doesn't want to lose those precious $$'s from their lobbys. Everyone should not forget that RIM could easily license the rights from NTP - but they're just being little bitches and decided not to. I am just so pissed lately about the influence of big business (especially MPAA RIAA) having our elected representatives in their pockets and promoting onerous ip rules, and now we have congress trying to back-door an exception. Live by the laws you write for God's sake.
