Its not like VA is like Sun or even Apple, who make their earnings through selling propreitary hardware which is backed up by their software and services. There is just too much competition in hardware for the decreasing amount of it that people are buying. The compelling reason to buy hardware from VA? Linux support. Since that's what they were really selling anyway, why not just focus on that as a core business. I know the people that only read slashdot because they hate it are going to gloat about this being the end of VA, and OSDN, and oh look their stock is going to be worth half a penny instead of a whole one now, but lets face it - all PC makers are feeling this slump. So yeah, this is news for nerds, but it doesn't really matter. Its nice to see that VA isn't using their media outlet for spin control, too.
we're not talking a star wars type re-release here. it's only being shown in certain cities on certain days to hype up the release of the movie on DVD. there's fat chance it will ever make it to anywhere within a few hours driving distance of where i live.
What is the real world impact of these numbers? Is it just an ego boost for the producer of product X? Does it influence buying? Does it change R&D strategy? Especially since the numbers differ so much from analasyst to analasyst, how does anyone make any sort of decisions bade on this information?
just because a company can monitor what the employee is doing, doesn't mean they should. Sure, maybe i'd then only spend 1 hour of my workday doing *productive* internet things. But would the 7 other hours be productive? hell no! without the occasional break to read slashdot, check personal email etc, i would go out of my mind. productivity is directly liked to morale. Its pretty easy to tell if an employee is goofing off *too* much just by looking at what they get done. Monitoring employees and keeping them on task all day long may *seem* like a good idea to management types, but in reality the employees will just hate their jobs even more, and as a result be less productive.

How is ipix getting away with this? Back in high school I worked for a real estate company and we did 360deg views of rooms inside homes they were trying to sell using software that made QuickTime VR movies (not Apple's, QTVR Authoring Studio was too expensive). About a year after we started doing it, it caught on, and we started getting ads from ipix asking us to buy their $500 software. I had seen qtvr and thought it was cool long before we ever started using it. How can ipix claim that they have the rights to this technology?
I really hate laptops that have the completely flat keys. Couple that with an eraser mouse, and you're in laptop hell.
For some reason, apple does the best job in the keyboard area. powerbooks have the nicest keyboards of any laptop i've ever used.
if you really need a split eronomic keyboard, just attach some clamps on one so you can slide it on over the laptop keyboard and clamp it down, allowing for space so you don't hit the factory keyboard. a trip to the hardware store ought to do you
IMHO, this is how MS will die - not the Fed suit, but piles of private suits
oh, c'mon Hemos. I would like that just as much as you, but we both know that it isn't going to happen. Sure, they'll end up taking a hit financially, and will probably have to make some changes in their pricing, but they will be far from dead. Heck, all those lawsuits couldn't destroy the tobacco industry, and they kill people.
LOL (for real!). Dude, if I had points I would. In real live my constant string of bad jokes makes people scorn me, but in slashdot land it's a whole other story.
...everything was going well until John Ashcroft (R, Attorney General) broke up the meeting on the grounds that music lead the dancing, and dancing lead to dirty, evil, lustful thoughts.
Because, believe it or not, tax dollars actually come back to citizens in the form of services. The more socialist the system, the better off the poor are, and the worse off the rich.
same in north dakota. for example, at the 'we make you bake' pizza places like papa murphy's, there is no tax if you take it home and bake it, but it is taxed if they bake it for you
I feel that corporations are the ones who *should* be paying for software. After all, they can afford it, and when you compare $200 for a piece of productivity software to the salary of the person that will be in theory more productive for having used it, it's really not that large of an investment. Besides, the corporate clients are where the software companies make their real money. When business can pay for software, it takes the pressure off the home user, for whom $200 for a piece of software is a large investment. I don't see any real ethical problem for Joe User to have all the pirated apps he wants, but businesses really ought to pay for their software. After all, they are using it for profit themselves.
However, I don't see why Microsoft should be able to pressure companies into compliance audits. If they are so worried that their software is being stolen, then they should petition to have a criminal investigation launched. What really scares me about this is I may some day have the RIAA or the MPAA knocking at my door, demanding an audit to make sure all the music and movies I own have been legally purchased, or the cops coming to my door to request an audit to make sure that I don't have any marijuana in my possession. Nobody, even corporations, should be treated like criminals just because they 'might be' commiting a crime.
Greenspan is playing with interest rates, in an attempt to keep the economy under control, but the policies of the president do have a lot to do with it. Quite frankly, the economy is taking a bit of a downturn right now because consumer confidence is down right now. The transition to a new president is probably to blame, but a lot of people are worried that the new Bush ecomonic plan is a return to the failed trickle-down theory of the 80's
