Back in the late 80's, and most of the 90's, Mac bashing was the cool thing to do. Really, it's just been the microsoft loving fools (i've heard them called micro-softies) who bash on Apple. It's really a lot like the people who have a sticker of calvin urinating on a ford logo plasterd on the window of their chevy pickup.

However, since the introduction of the PPC, mac hardware has generally been respected by the geek community. Now that macs run OS X, the geeks like it even more.

However, there's always going to be somebody who has to bash the mac for whatever reason. But lets face it, in the year 2002 you can't show how cool of a computer user you are by simply bashing Apple.

Now Microsoft on the other hand....

And isn't it a shock that for $1300 you can build yourself a top-of-the-line athlon box with tons of ram and a geforce 3?

Yes, for $1300 you can do that. However, people who would do that are not part of Apple's target market. People keep forgetting that Apple is a premium brand. They aren't competing with people who would order their own parts and build a box. With a $1300 entry price they aren't even competing with Compaq etc in the bargain market. Your same argument can be used to take a knock at Sony's PCs as well. Point is, for a premium brand like Apple, you pay a premium price.

  6. expensive macs on OS X Vs. Linux On The Desktop · · Score: 1

Its not really the case that Macs are more expensive than PCs. Apple is a quality brand name, like Dell. A high end Mac (PMG4) is about the same price as a high end dell. A low end iMac is around $800. sure, there are some bargain PCs for less than that, but you would have a hard time matching the quality for the same price.

There is a tarball that is "for all operating systems", but it looks like it might be the quicktime addon. They make you regester to get the binaries and source. On2's website is also pushing their commecial vp4 codec, which they claim delivers full screen 60fps mpeg-2 quality video at around 750kbit...

Good flick. Of course, they showed it at the crappy theatre in my town (on three screens tho) instead of the big theater with the big screens and the digital sound (sigh). Maybe there is some nationwide strategy that they aren't telling us

Anyway, my girlfriend and I took her 10 year old sister, and we showed up at 6:15 to find a fairly long line already there to get tickets for the 7pm show. I haven't seen a line like that since Phantom Menace, so I'd guess Monsters is going to win the box office game this weekend.

Monsters, Inc, and Harry Potter are the two movies I've been most excited about seeing (old enough to drink, but still into the kiddie films... go figure). I figured that since Monsters was backed by Disney and Harry Potter by AOL/TimeWarner, I wouldn't be seeing a trailer.

    WRONG!

The new Harry Potter trailer played! It was pretty much the same one as before, but had some addition footage of quiddich and other eye candy that probably just recently got finished.

Then, just after the theater had played their little "hey, we're Carmike cinema's and we have a lame 3D intro thing" thing, and I was beginning to think that the rumors were false, the LucasFilm logo popped up and did its shiny thing, and I was treated to some very hastily thrown together scences from AotC set to Darth Vader breathing. Got to see portman, the new anikan, yoda, some light sabers and some ships. Nothing special, but enough to remind me that I should be getting excited about seeing it this summer.

Then there was the Pixar short, which was probably one of the best short cartoons that I have ever seen. The CGI wasn't so much impressive as the level of emotion that the characters had. I won't give any spoilers, but I will say that I enjoyed the short more than the movie itself

And don't get me wrong, it was a good flick. However, it did play out like a chilren's cartoon. While there was some stuff for the adults, this was certainly no Shrek. It was still enjoyable, and the munchkin liked it.

So um, yeah. Go to it. You won't be disappointed.

As a user of all three of the major platforms (*nix, windoze, mac), I can honestly say that I like each of them the best: for certain things.

I use my linux box quite a lot, since I'm a student of computer science and wannabe developer. The free tools are there, and they work well. I also have Visual Studio on my windows machine, but I'm not much of an end user application developer. I also serve some webpages off my dsl, and like to do geeky things... the linux box is great for that

I use my windows machine to play games. It also has the software support for my TV tuner and DVD player, and thus it is used as somewhat of an entertainment unit in my bedroom. However, things like web browsing and general computing (IE, word processing), are more a matter of OS taste and 1.4GHz vs 500MHz really doesn't make a noticable difference.

The Mac is great for photoshop, flash... all those creative things. That's what people buy macs for. Those who are buying the top of the line G4 are the professionals who spend most of their time in apps like photoshop and use a lot of filters. Joe User is just gonna web surf and word process, and the only useful comparison in that area between the 500Mhz iMac and the Gig+ PC is just a matter of OS preference.

This story was just flamebait, pure and simple. People should spend less time ranting about what platform is faster, and just pick a computer that fits their needs.
