Yes the cost is expensive but I like the concept. Still have my free runner and N900. Now I can upgrade still have a form factor, keyboard and screen I like. On a larger 2nd run costs can drop and others can pick up the same idea. BTW I have known web servers to running on the free runner ( only as demo concepts)
The love child of Openmoko and N900. I think if they deliver on the promise, this will change the way people view their mobile devices. Motherboard replacements and case replacements will gain traction just like in the assemble your own PC era.
The the good think about Openmoko is that you can install Qtopia (also under GPL now) if you want to by a simple one line command. I use it in that configuration as my main phone. I can't think of any other phone where it is so easy to choose the environment you want.

Disclaimer : I sell the Freerunner in India so my comments may be biased.
In India we already pay a service tax for internet connections and the rate is the smame, i.e. 12.25%. If the news about charging VAT instead of service tax is true (I doubt it) the debate is over which tax authority collects the revenue and not what the consumer pays. More like two revenue collection departments of the governmnet fighting amongst themselves.
Also VAT is decided by the state government and goes to its kitty, while servise tax is cllected by the federal (central) governmnet and then redistributed according to a pre approved formula with the various states.
Are u from the future where GPLv3 has already been finalised and there are softwares being licensed under it? If yes will you please tell me if google did build a moon base in 2016?
What in the world will the poor people do with all the cellphone and $100 computers. How about giving them medical equipment, building schools and homes first and then giving them computers!

The Neo 1973 (www.openmoko.com) does this ok and when the Freerunner comes out it should be the perfect phone for this purpose.

GPL 3 stories keep getting posted on /. so at least someone finds it relevant.
Does Gmail not qualify as a market leader? Everyone I know has switched to gmail from hotmail and yahoo.
Are computers the most important requirement for education?
