    Texas politics has been sort of oddball regarding parent. Despite being a solid red state, Republicans won control of the Texas state legislature for the first time since the Reconstruction in 2002.

    Here in Texas where districts are redrawn once per decade, the Republicans redrew the districts again in 2003 for the sole purpose of gerrymandering. This Supreme Court upheld the statewide redistricting in 2006.

    Imagine the chaos if districts were redrawn every time the opposite party gained control of the legislature.

    I would hate a society where media outlets have such a powerful influence on the general public's opinion regarding any subject. I realize America is already reached that threshold point where the majority of Americans either don't form their own opinions or just don't care, but I believe public dissent should be generated through a bottom-up approach.

    I'm a happy RR customer as well. I have a computer running torrents 24/7/365 without any complaints from TimeWarner or worrying about a bandwith cap (Azureus reports 1.25TB down/1.75TB up). You can't say that about a lot of the ISPs out there today.

    They do test between different comparison levels. The problem is they haven't posted any of the results yet which makes this article incomplete and useless.

    Slightly off tangent, but hibernation (S4) fails in WinXP SP2 if you have more than 1GB of RAM.

    My biggest problem with standby on my WinXP machine is that my machine will randomly wake up after a random amount of time. I've already disabled WOL and Wake-on-USB, but my computer will wake up randomly from standby anywhere from 3 minutes to never. I still can't figure out what's causing the problem. :(

    I agree, if you ever watched PBS's News Hour they ironically have a less biased, more in-depth reports on the domestic / international news as opposed to CNN or FOX News that peddle to their viewers with sensationalism.

    There's a 6% reduction between UK and US in terms of murders with firearms per capita compared to murders per capita. I'm not sure how much of an impact firearms alone have on violent crimes. I believe it may be more than just firearms, perhaps cultural influences, that results in the much higher violent crimes rate in America.

    Are you grandstanding for the sake of grandstanding? The only people I can think of saying something like "busts out the chop-suey and puts your old white ass in the hospital" are either non-Asian, or AzN gAnGsTA.

    Some individuals may find the "oriental" label offensive as a product of colonial European period. As a Chinese American, I can't really say I'm offended by the term but then again I've only heard it usually referred to oriental rugs or from old white guys. There are much more racist terms than "oriental".

    Compared to y'alls stories I feel lucky to be with Time Warner here in Texas. I pay $45/mo for solid 300/40 and I have a computer at home that does nothing but torrent all day. I don't know how long Azureus has been keeping stats, but it puts me at ~1.5TB down and up. *knock on wood*

    I don't agree with the university's decision to block student access, I'm just arguing that it's doable in a better manner than simply blocking internet access at night.

    Without going into whether the university should be controlling how students spend their time or not, they could just implement a proxy for all the dorm ethernet jacks and block commonly abused ports (bittorrent, etc).

    I think UT Austin handles the bandwith problem quite well. After a few years of trying different methods, they settled on the current format:

    Students are allotted 4/8/12GB of weekly bandwith depending on their plan. If you go over your bandwith limit, you are automatically moved into a 2nd class network that has bandwith throttled (slightly better than dial-up) or buy 1GB for $5.

    I worked IT support at one of the largest US universities for a few years. I'm not claiming to have spent my live "among the masses", but I dealt with a varied customer base from incoming students to aging professors that needed hand-holding through everything.

    Yes, overloading un-powered USB hubs can cause problems but those occurrences are rare in my experience. However, I've never seen a hdd enclosure or external hdd that didn't come with its own power block. I haven't worked with many external cd/dvd burners but I'd guess most of them come with their own AC adapter as well.

    The exact opposite scenario would be a disaster and it's evident in home theater setups. Every company feels the need to come out with their own plug and cable for whatever reason, and consumers end up spending a bundle on cable and adapters.

    I take it you hate USB as well? USB has greatly standardized devices that would otherwise be hogging serial / parallel / proprietary ports and I don't see people shoving stuff where it doesn't belong.

    The problem is if something fits in a USB port but isn't supposed to work with USB. I haven't seen a device like that exist.
