Tips on subverting China's censorship of Flickr. (cnet/news.com)
Specifically, Greasemonkey needs to run a script that changes the Flickr server name into its numeric Internet Protocol address, Butterfield said. That would indicate that the China block uses the Domain Name System (DNS), which translates alphanumeric addresses such as "Flickr.com" into the numeric addresses actually used to route packets of data over the Internet. How soon before China starts censoring by IP range?
Gartner Group predicts IBM losing control - research firm questions IBM's marketing strategy for OS/2
****GARTNER GROUP PREDICTS IBM LOSING CONTROL 04/18/91 STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT, U.S.A., 1991 APR 18 (NB) -- Gartner Group predicts that IBM will not be successful in its efforts to encourage a majority of users to migrate to OS/2. The information technology industry research, analysis and consulting firm says that by 1995, OS/2's market share will only be half that of Windows. The prediction is based on a recent personal computing conference held by the Gartner Group.
Off topic, I just found out that even if you preview a post with HTML tags as "Plain Old Text" it still renders the HTML tags properly. On the other hand, regular text still works fine in "Plain Old Text" mode so why isn't this mode used as default?
China was politically and culturally weak during the 19th century, and Chinese fought one another over foreign money. This has largely attributed to the downfall of China as a nation.
With the Patriot Act, mishandling of the Iraq War, and companies forfeiting principles for the pursuit of profits, are we destined to follow China's footsteps as well?
Is the sole purpose of firms to pursue profit for shareholders? Or do firms have social responsibilities domestically and abroad?
I know, I have been looking into Linux games recently as well (been loving the old-school feel of Battle for Wesnoth) but sometimes I just want to play games my friends are playing. When Starcraft 2 comes out later this year (personal guess), they're releasing it for PC and Mac but not Linux. Unfortunately, I don't love Linux enough to boycott games in protest.
Also, I bought the x1950 before I installed Ubuntu and started using it on a daily basis. In the future I will be buying nvidia though unless AMD's influence can substantially improve ATI's drivers.
I've been using Ubuntu whenever I can, my biggest problem from switching completely to Ubuntu is:
1) PC gaming 2) Problems getting my dual monitor setup my ATI x1950 3) A bunch of scripts I wrote that only work on Windows.:(
And the deal breaker for my fiancée / family: Thunderbird breaks (seg fault) with Anthy installed, my parents need to write e-mails in Chinese and my fiancée needs to write e-mails in Japanese.
That and the fact that my parents visit Chinese sites that think IE is the only browser available.
Perhaps you may be a responsible parent, but not all parents are responsible. The government needs to look out for the interests of children as well as parents.
What happens to children with irresponsible or abusive parents? Does the government have the responsibility to step in and protect the child?
I agree with you that governments do not need to regulate what children hear, but they do have some responsibility in protecting children.
aka Not In My Back Yard syndrome. Another example: Most people aren't against beach property development until after they get their own beach front property. Afterwards they point out how development is killing the environment and ruining the beaches.
Personally I've been happy with laptop keyboards as long as they were full-sized, although this restriction does limit the size of the laptop I'm buying. I'd agree that I haven't found a comfortable keyboard with smaller keys though.
Scarred by history: The Rape of Nanjing
Between December 1937 and March 1938 one of the worst massacres in modern times took place. Japanese troops captured the Chinese city of Nanjing and embarked on a campaign of murder, rape and looting.
...
The number of women raped was said by Westerners who were there to be 20,000, and there were widespread accounts of civilians being hacked to death.
Yet many Japanese officials and historians deny there was a massacre on such a scale.
They admit that deaths and rapes did occur, but say they were on a much smaller scale than reported. And in any case, they argue, these things happen in times of war.
When I visited Osaka castle in 2001 they had a small section dedicated to WW2 on one of the floors. Under one of the historical photographs it stated that Japan was responding to the US aggression and mobilized its armed forces in national defense. I can't remember if it was referring to Pearl Harbor or Japan's entry into WW2 in general.
History doesn't necessarily need to be rubbed in the losers' faces as it causes unnecessary hate, but sugarcoating or ignoring history is equally dangerous.
Sure the authorities may not abuse this power now but what's to stop them from abusing it in the future?
During the 1930 US Census added a seemingly harmless addition to the census form: nationality. This meaningless piece of data was used 20-odd years later for the collection of German and Japanese immigrants into concentration camps.
I have spindles of CD-RW and DVD-RW thinking I would use them for backup or other purposes.
Honestly though, with hard drives as cheap as it is it's cheaper to just write a script / set up a cron job to backup over the network (within a home environment).
I use some CD-RW's for compatible CD-MP3 players, and occasionally DVD-RW for temporary file storage or transfers bigger than my 1GB USB drive.
The problem with vastly different races or teams is that supporting the game (for balancing issues) would last years and I'm not sure if all companies want to spend as much time actively supporting a game.
I mean, most companies seem to spend a few years supporting a game before completely dropping it. On the other hand Blizzard just released a patch for Brood Wars as recently as 5/16/07, 9 years after the game has launched!
I'm happy that it wasn't an MMO either. I loved Starcraft and I loved Warcraft 3, but I'm extremely happy that the two have developed into different RTS games.
Warcraft 3 was a slightly RPG-ish RTS game that focused on heroes, items, and tactics. From what I've heard, Blizzard is trying to develop each race's identity even stronger in SC2 with more massing for Zerg, stronger but fewer units for Protoss, etc.
The core of Starcraft focused a little bit more on strategy (but not to the extent of Supreme Commander) and I'm glad that they continued that trend as well. Considering their Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo lines it looks like they've developed them into different genres. Diablo is action RPG, Starcraft is old school RTS, Warcraft into a mix of RPG/RTS and MMO. Blizzard also made a small attempt at FPS with SC:Ghost as well.
I think most gamers are more attached to gameplay rather than storyline, so it doesn't make sense to make a Starcraft MMO that will steal players from WoW whil only attracting a few more MMO players. I don't play WoW / MMOs, and had SC2 turned out to be another MMO I know I wouldn't play it either despite how much I loved SC1. I don't think I'm alone in this.
I used to be a PC game reviewer for a big metro newspaper. I wrote plenty of scathing reviews (95% of the games I reviewed were crap, as is the market) but I think only one or two of them ever got printed. I suppose my editor wanted the section to have a more positive atmosphere and to get companies to keep sending in games to review (the section was fairly new).
It works via a plug-in and I just tested it with Firefox 2.0.0.4.
I've always used Windiz Update as an alternative to Windows Update.

I had memorized most of the manual so I could answer those random questions between levels without it.
Man, I remember playing that game and having to single unit control everything since there were no groupings!

Does the lack of security validate any action?
