I'm not sure about anybody else here, but I was surprised to see that they mentioned that this will benefit 'Desktop' users.

I think that when it comes to the performance spectrum, Servers would be where this fix is the most needed. Admittedly if you are running a solid server, you should know to use older gen hardware and software that has been proven to be stable. However, some of this 'shiny new' tech coming out is appealing.

How about the Seagate 1500GB drive hang error? To my understanding Windows has been fixed, but the problem still persists in Linux. Could this potentially make a difference? I've been looking to build myself a nice NAS and those 1500GB drives are _cheap_. I can pick one up for about $160. I remember not too long ago that could only get me 80GB.

My father was busted with marijuana when he was 17 (now 45). He can't enter the US and has not had the time to get and it resolved.

Being Canadian and having family that cross the border on a regular basis, how will this affect Canadians? Will we have to register online?

Canadians entering the states (who are driving, not flying) do not need anything other than a valid drivers license and a clean criminal record (which they look up upon entering).

If you are flying in, all the rules for everyone else is the same.

So, to reiterate, do Canadians driving into the country have pre-register online?

I want Win7 to succeed because of a few reasons, the biggest of which is because I like Linux the way it is. I don't want it to become mainstream and ruin it. If that ever happens, I promise I will switch to something else (maybe BSD? Hell, maybe Haiku.)

I am so fucking tired of everyone screaming and shouting "Linux is bettera tan tem all!!!1!!!!!one!!! Winbloez is teh suck!"

I listen to Howard regularly (not hardcore fan, but 2-3 times a week) and I think he's over paid. $100 million per year for 5 years? That's insane. I also listen to Bubba The Love Sponge, who is going through contract hell right now with SiriusXM. Last I heard was that negotiations are not going well and they are unsure if they will be back next year. I find him more entertaining and they're making a fraction of everyone else. They even took up a second deal with a local FCC-regulated FM station in Tampa Bay, FL just to make ends meet. They also have to push merchandise like crazy, as well they run "Bubbapalooza's" where they (essentially) do what they do on their show, live in person in various places across the US.

(Disclaimer: These statements are not directed to you. They are just general statements.)

That is, unfortunately, the common answer when someone mentions anything of distro bubbles: "There are alternatives!". You know, this has got to stop at some point. Noone asked if there's another distro, the OP only mentioned that Ubuntu 8.10 is slower than previous versions. And he's right to complain if he was used to have a good performance on it. Hell, even I had better experiences with Windows XP than Ubuntu 8.04 in apparent performance.

The reason people suggest alternatives is because there are so many Distros. If you use solely Ubuntu and then the next release is awful, you'll get a bad taste in your mouth with Linux in general. If you don't even entertain the idea of trying something else, that taste will stay forever and you may end up back with Windows (or whatever you previously used). What most people fail to mention, is that it's just as much work to restore your previous install as it is to switch back to Windows(/OSX/BSD or your previous choice of OS).

Also, by switching to something else (anything else) you are sending a message back to the developers of Ubuntu to smarten up on their next release. You get what you give, really. (*begin the "but it's free!!!" crowd*)
