  1. Chinese Visitors on Quake in Taiwan Cripples Internet · · Score: 1

Interesting...though my website's (primarily Chinese) traffic has slowed to a trickle since yesterday, I have gotten a few hits from Hong Kong, Malaysia, Guangdong and Jilin. I wonder if they're not connected through Taiwan?

  2. My experience on Second Life Hype vs. Anti-Hype · · Score: 1

I tried Second Life. I guess I didn't make my character "beautiful" enough, because I got constant "yells" of "How dare you sign on looking like that" etc. Must've been the pot belly. As far as I could tell it was just a bunch of sex rooms with pixelated choppy (but meticulously dressed) characters awkwardly flirting and touching each other. It was rather entertaining when I told my character to "disco dance" over to them naked, and they ran away. The interface is horrible too, as many people have noted. Real Life is much better, to be honest.

  3. Not on XP? on Samsung's Solid-State Disk Drive Unveiled · · Score: 5, Interesting

Could someone tell me why one type of drive wouldn't work with a specific version of Windows? Shouldn't they be able to write drivers for that?

  4. Reading on Is Internet Addiction a Medical Condition? · · Score: 1

Is reading an addiction? Most people do it alot, and have for many years. It can be for practical uses, or for pleasure. Actually, most of my time on the Internet is spent reading. If I wasn't allowed to read anything for a week, I would feel deprived. Finding stuff online to read just happens to be more convenient for me. Same with the phone vs. IM. Does that mean I'm addicted? Now games are a different matter...

  5. Ice mountains on The Sierras of Titan · · Score: 2, Insightful

Right, there are mountains...ice mountains, not rock. I don't see what this "similarity" does for humans.

  6. Re:WoW on China Clamps Down on Online Gaming · · Score: 1

If they tried to restrict WoW in China, there would actually be an uprising of historical proportions...yes, it's very popular here.

  7. Captivity? on White Dolphin Functionally Extict · · Score: 1

Does this mean there are none in captivity either?

  8. Re:Data Center Congregation on Shortage of Electricity Drives Data Center Talks · · Score: 1

How about putting them in a basement? It's cool underground. People don't like living underground, so we have to pay for AC, but I don't think servers care. The solar panels can be above.

  9. Re:What's happend if China on China Reinstates Wikipedia Ban · · Score: 1

Oh no, there will still be plenty of flashy congested sites about Chinese pop music stars, and buying gadgets and clothes, and Business English. Just not the corner Internet you know and love.

  10. Well... on Report Blasts "Peak Oil" Theory · · Score: 1

It has to run out some time.

  11. Sensationalist headline on Space Elevators Could Be Lethal · · Score: 1

I thought that the advantage of the elevator was to transport alot of stuff for less money. Are most supplies really that sensitive to radiation?

  12. Chinese "captchas" on Web Users Angered by Anti-Spam 'Captcha' · · Score: 1

You know what really sucks, is I've run into Chinese sites that have them with Chinese characters, for example the popular QQ chat client account signup form. To get an account, you need to fill in a 5 (Chinese) character captcha, and unfortunately for Chinese learners, some fairly uncommon characters sometimes come up and then it's impossible to know how to type them. With no knowledge of characters, it is impossible, as I assume that Chinese OCR isn't up to the task.

  13. forget about money on Would You Take A Paycut for More Interesting Work? · · Score: 1

I quit a well-paying programming job in the US last year in order to teach English to children in China. I'm writing from my nice house in Shaanxi Province, where I have lots of free time to learn more Chinese and work on my own CS projects and other hobbies. My salary is only US$600/month, but that's 6x the average salary in this city - I eat out at restaurants every day and just got back from a trip to tropical Hainan island, which only cost about US$400. Money is relative, do what you enjoy and don't let the fruits of your labor and time go to waste.
