Wow. The wii in the back for your kids to play on seems a bit unnecessary though. When they hit their teens, they probably wont want to be seen with their parents anyway and I can't imagine the geek mobile will help. Who knows why you got modded offtopic when your comment is directly related the article. For bonus geek points you should paint your five digit/. user id on the side of the van - instant street cred.
People like this are why ham radio should be banned and all ham radio owners forbidden from owning electronics.
Please tell me what benefit this man provides to anyone in public.
There's so much distraction there. This is a pileup waiting to happen.

I think people who choose to play this kind of game would do so because of the limitation. Clearly the market for such a product would be smaller, but I don't think that it would be nonexistent. I personally believe that the avatar part of the patent is nothing more than a novelty, but being able to earn health or fitness credits is a pretty good idea.
Maybe the guy has a good sense of humor about it. Think of how famous the Star Wars kid could have been. Probably not very, but he might have gotten some good interviews and an extra 15 minutes. Sometimes the only difference between having people laugh with you and at you is whether or not you decide to join in.
Having said that, I'm not sure why you got modded flamebait, you have a valid point, maybe it was the anonymouscoward part. Personally, I wish I knew that guy. What a bad ass.
Anyway, yeah - fat people. For some reason society has decided its okay to mock them. Even better, a normal healthy weight is "fat" and only absurdly low fat percentages are "normal", meaning that's even more people that you're allowed to tell them what they should be doing with their diets / bodies.
According to random numbers found here, acceptable body fat percentages for men are between 18%-26% and between 25%-31% for women. These numbers aren't even vaguely "absurdly low". Now, if you are talking about the media's version of what is "healthy" I agree. I really dislike that women (and to a lesser extent men) are pressured into being overly thin and often develop eating disorders.
I don't see a problem with this type of game though. As you said there are many overweight people and I think this could serve to motivate some of them. Anyone that might be discouraged by it doesn't need to play. As someone else mentioned the wii fit already does this.
I think the likelihood of getting a stipend depends on a number of factors including: school, caliber of student, available funds, and department. I went to grad school for Math and think the vast majority had assistantships or fellowships. On the other hand, I don't think I've heard of a lot of people getting stipends when they work on an MBA.
I would hope that students actually paying for their advanced degrees wouldn't be expected to do so much tedious work.
Does the distro work with your wireless card without any complicated installation procedures.
At least that was a pain for me (as I am an uber n006). After a lot of googleing the solution was relatively pain free in ubuntu. I agree with your points though, the best distribution is the one that works for you and Ubuntu seems to do a pretty good job all around (for a general user). I've been meaning to try out Lubuntu and just haven't gotten around to it. Anyone have positive experience with it on an older, low-mem system?
After looking at the Richter Scale, I think my earlier comments were a tad hasty. A rating of 3.4 on the scale is relatively minor and usually doesn't result in damage. I still think the fact that the magnitude was higher than expected shows that they were acting irresponsibly, but taking this into consideration it doesn't seem quite as egregious.
In other news, Swiss marine biologist accused of attaching lasers to the heads of sharks.
Seriously, if this guy changes his name to Dr. Quake or some other reasonable mad scientist name his only punishment should be a lecture from the super hero of his choice.
__________
On a more serious note, this is pretty scary. His excuse that the result was stronger than he expected is lame - when dealing with things of this magnitude you should try to be as certain as possible. Calling such a damaging incident "a learning process" seems a little asinine. I hope no one was hurt.
Thanks for the attempt at defense, particularly since it only got you modded flamebait too. Bad moderation drives me crazy. Hopefully meta-moderation will revoke their rights to moderate.
Troll? Really? I'm just saying you shouldn't initiate physical contact with someone that has a job that puts them in danger. I guess someone had a problem with the fact that I said cops are pretty friendly (I even said there are exceptions)! Sure, cops that use their powers inappropriately should be legally dealt with in an appropriate manor - but why hate them all without justification? Modding someone troll because you disagree is an abuse of the system. You're a dick.
I'm not saying that tapping an officer on the shoulder is assault, but it probably isn't a good ideal to initiate physical contact by surprising them with a tap on the shoulder from behind when they might have a (quite reasonable) expectation of being attacked. Also, cursing at an officer isn't assault but why be a jerk? Cops have a difficult job and in my experience are pretty friendly even under adverse conditions. Certainly there are exceptions though.
I run linux on one of my home computers and it was easy to install. But windows is pretty easy to install too. I think more than 2% of people can follow a trivial menu driven installation. Ridiculous hyperbole doesn't help your argument.
The likely reason that humans haven't noticed as much of a difference on a starvation diet, is that they have generally started later in life. (Obviously, there are many humans that have starved most of their lives but still not had increased lifespans - the diet still needs to be nutritionally adequate). Iirc I think this is one of the reasons that the Okinawans are believed to have had longer lifespans.
I didn't mean to sound crotchety too (who knew I would get to use that word twice in as many days). I just didn't like the snarky tone of the above commenter and the logical fallacy that all of his knowledge is common. I instead apparently came off as a jerk. By the way, I assume from your nickname (which is awesome) that you are in a similar age group.
Yeah, I know about all of those things too. You made a similar point yourself - Salon hasn't been relevant in a long time, that is a big part of why many people will not remember it.
I'm 26 and didn't know what it was either. Just because you know about something doesn't mean everyone else does. From other comments it looks like they put up a paywall around 2001 or so, and I expect fewer people have paid attention to it after that point. Before that not nearly as many people were online. Is there a reverse "get of my lawn" meme to direct at crotchety old people?
Personally I carry both a watch and a cell phone at all times and always end up checking the phone for time instead of the watch. When I'm not on the move I usually just check the computer because it's much closer to hand than either the watch or the phone.

Of course they don't believe in global warming, it's freezing there.

You could try puppy linux.
I would add to that list:

Now, if only I replied to the correct person...

If I've told you once, I've told you a million times: Stop exaggerating!
Correlation does not imply causation. Now, if you stab your eyes out did I cause it? Well, maybe...
at least the comic is good.

So...why the watch?
