The project, while generally welcomed, has come in for some criticism from the open-source community. The bug database should help make open-source software more secure, but in a roundabout way, said Ben Laurie, a director of the Apache Foundation who is also involved with OpenSSL. A more direct way would be to provide the code analysis tools to the open-source developers themselves, he said. "It is regrettable that DHS has decided once more to ensure that private enterprise profits from the funding, while the open-source developers are left to beg for the scraps from the table," he said. "Why does the DHS think it is worthwhile to pay for bugs to be found, but has made no provision to pay for them to be fixed?"

I new I'd find a little truth in there somewhere!

Of course this system from Coverity only checks for static source code bugs, and not run-time errors or semantic errors. And even then, not even necessarily real bugs, but "possible" bugs. Sounds more like FxCop than anything else. The real meat of this evaluation was probably done on the Symantec side, which was probably a laundry list of tests for known vulnerabilities.

The funding will come, unfortunately it is all how you classify it. A scientific satellite to help observe global warming? NOT in this administration! They don't even want to acknowledge that global warming is happening, let alone help observe it. If this upsets you, I suggest you vote for a President that actually cares about Science. I tried and his name wasn't even on the ballot! :(

Yet I haven't seen proof that any of these things are avoidable or even a problem. You're saying it is ok to rob from me to pay others to do research that I'm not interested in. If you think these issues are so important, why won't people voluntarily pay to research them, as we do in other sciences?

You also say that public research brings advances to society, but I don't believe that, either. The greatest advances in society happen in competitive marketplaces when businesses see a consumer need to be filled. NASA doesn't have consumers, and it creates needs out of thin air.
You say this as if the American public was given a list of stuff they wanted there tax dollars to pay for and chose the Iraq war over scientific research. This isn't about people deciding not to send that monthly check of $50 to NASA for aerospace research, this is about our government taking our money out of NASA's hands and placing it in the hands of defense contractors and war profiteers.

Also, the greatest advances in society happen in the open market place where you constantly have to worry about stepping on other people's copyrights and patents? Cuz most of them on my list are from garages, university basements, and government funded non-profits.

NASA doesn't have consumers? Never eaten Astronaut Iced Cream?

As I said, "While the style of gameplay in Planetside wouldn't appeal to enough people for it to have 100k players in peak hours". Planetside is a fairly unique game. It is trapped between two very popular genres and is shunned by both. One thing it does have is a strong community who for the first two years pulled off a impressive grass-root marketting campaign. Problem is, a few hundred die hard fans just don't have the power to push a game like that in this day in age.

WOW has received tremendous publicity and marketting. Just because they aren't running television ads (which I don't think is the more brilliant way to market a MMORPG) doesn't mean a lot of resources go into attracting new players. WOW is simply the next big thing in the MMORPG genre, so 'duh' it has 6 million subscribers. Planetside is a niche game, one of the few MMORPGFPS games out there, and a tight community who loves to play it. Unfortunately, SOE doesn't give two shits about them and refuses to put any resources into attracting new players.

It has gotten so bad, we have in game ads in Planetside for SWG :(

Planetside was never really butchered by SOE (though for some this is debatable). Planetside's core gameplay has remained close to its original concept despite rather large (pun) additions to the game. What is killing Planetside is a total lack of publicity, promotion, and marketting. While the style of gameplay in Planetside wouldn't appeal to enough people for it to have 100k players in peak hours, it would certainly attract a lot more avid players if the players only knew about it. When was the last time you saw a commercial for Planetside on television?

In team based online multiplayer games, the older players bring a level of experience, maturity, and organization that often make the group better as a whole, or at least more fun to play with. In many gaming clans I've been with over the years, its usually the older players (40+) who take the lead and provide an example for the 12 year olds in the group. So I say they're good for gaming, and at the very least, they don't swear as much over teamspeak and don't call everyone a n00b.
