  1. Scared 4 Apple on Intel's "Terascale" Vision · · Score: 1

    I am worried for Apple.
I hope they don't get suckered into this wild Intel adventure...

I hope Steve Jobs doesn't buy into this and instead focusses on getting Mac OS X to scale well on 2 - 4 cores.. (perhaps 8 cores for OS X Server).
IMHO, a normal consumer should NOT need more than 2 cores.
And they do, it indicates that there is something wrong with the 2 cores that are there ...Or the OS running on it.

I somehow am *very* cynical about new throwing a few dozen cores in the chip trend.

    I agree.

My G.F kid sister behaves like the characters on TV.
I have noticed that in pretty much every situation, her response can be guessed by watching (american) TV for a few months. I don't think most people realize that the kids are emulating what they see on TV growing up.
I mean we see an op-ed once in a while saying TV is a bad influence and then everyone forgets about it. But it is quiet a revelation to actually meeting kids in real live, who behave like a collage of their favorite characters.

Another thing, I noticed is that the young people don't seem to know how to spend time on their own. By that I mean, when we were young, (I moved to the US a few years back), if we had nothing to do, we would do stuffs like:
    Read a book.
    Go outside and play.
    Climb trees.
Eat fruits from the tree when hungry.
    Climb fences.
    and stuffs like that.

Now-a-days kids sit in front of the TV. or play computer/Console games, or go to shopping malls or eat outside.

I do think that in the long run, it will have an effect on the humans.
But since we cannot look into future we will NOT know what it is till we are there.

Awesome post. - Good Common Sense approach.
I plan to take a print out and give it to my G.F. She already has a big debt, so I don't know if it will help her now.
She is trying to pay-off everything. But the interest - the sharks - are killing her. She is trying to stop her life and discipline herself for the next 5 years....

It is so hard to get out of debt, once you get sucked in.
The only solution is to NOT get in-debted.

I wish someone had advised her or given her a list like the one parent posted, *BEFORE* she got into so much debt.

    Good one!

  6. How does Voyager avoid crashing into Obstacles on Voyager 1 Passes 100 AU from the Sun · · Score: 4, Interesting

This is probably a dumb question. But here goes.

How is it that Voyager (and other probes) is able to avoid crashing into obstacles (eg: asteroids, commets, planets etc)?

Do they have some kind of navigation system that can sense an object coming towards it and alter its course?

One would think that in 30 years and so many billion miles, it must be *VERY* lucky to have avoided any obstacles in its path?

    Can anyone explain?

I wish they would do something more practical ...
instead of giving laptops to poor people.
Coz chances are they would probably appreciate good food, water, housing, schools much more.

And chances are, these laptops will be sold for 1 or more of the above.
    Or rarely used.

It is a pity when people think the way to help poor people in 3rd World country is to give them a Laptop.
Reminds of that Russian queen "If the people don't have bread to eat, why don't they eat cake?"

    Why not eh?

  9. Re:Spotlight facts and actual performance figures on WinFS Gets the Axe · · Score: 1

I just did atest on my OS X system: I did a search in the Finder (it's still Spotlight powered, just a different UI with more options) with all results displayed by default and with "type is image" as the only predicate. It found and displayed the full set of 32898 images on my computer in 30 seconds. That's nowhere near the "minutes" that you're making up, and it was from a cold start, and I had the window set to display thumbnails, so Spotlight was being slowed down by concurrent disk accesses as the Finder generated a thumbnail for each result. Doing the same search in list view takes a mere 4 seconds for the full list of 32898 images.

I had no idea we could do this on Tiger. It is awesome.. and truly very surprising how it listed all the images in the much maligned Mac OS X finder.
And I can attest this feature is FAST... It took just a few seconds on my iMac G5. Granted I don't have thousands of images... I have about 5 rolls worth of photos.

On a slightly different note:- I really do NOT get it why people hate finder..

    Thanks for the tip!
    Cheers!
  10. AAC is an open std ..... and so compatible.... on UK Music Fans Can Copy Own Tracks · · Score: 2, Interesting

My understanding is the DRM was "invented" so that the Content owners can restrict the device in which their content/music plays. Or to rephrase, the DRM is there *BECAUSE* RIAA insisted on it as a pre-condition for access the catalog. If the British Music Labels want the music to be "compatible" on all devices, am sure Apple will have NO problem offering DRM free AAC music. Right? As long as they offer their catalogs without stipulating DRM be there, wouldn't Apple be able to offer the downloads in UK drm-free AAC? To me this whole article is a sham..
