  1. Re:If their CS programs are like ours... on The Death Of CS In Education? · · Score: 2, Interesting

This is the TRUTH. In fact I did exactly this. I thought I would try out "business" for something new and hit on a huge gravy train.

I went from being an average/slightly above average software developer to a superstar business programmer/analyst.

Svery simple concepts like cron and CVS were unheard of, and by scheduling jobs and automatically sending out reports/trigger based warnings etc.. I'm able to easily appear like I'm doing the work of several other business analysts that still manually enter numbers into Excel reports (OMG!). I try teaching others here, but many people on the business side really just don't get it.

The biggest problem I have had so far is getting IT to understand that I know what the hell I'm doing and should have access to proper tools (e.g. SAS, SQL+, a UNIX box so I can schedule, and allowing me to run scripts that I've written on my own computer).

It may not be as challenging as pure software development, but it sure pays a lot more.

Learning the business is very easy and can be done by paying careful attention in meetings for the first few months on the job. I have great people skills and am very social, so I found this very easy.

  11. Re:The Japanese work long, not hard on Americans Are Seriously Sick · · Score: 1

I visited my sister who was teaching english there for two weeks, so my opinion is purely based on the local region (Takanabe) and the short time I spent there. I have to agree with the statement that the Japanese work long but not hard.

The children seemed to be raised by the state. They would go to school early. Stay until around 5pm, then go home for dinner. After dinner they would go right back to school for sports or to a crunch school like Kumon. They would then come home late to chores etc, go to sleep and repeat.

The same schedule was held by the workers, except they seemed to go back to work after dinner. I'm not sure if everyone did this.

The businesses I visited really seemed to take a lot of breaks. The environment was always jovial, and there didn't seem to be much pressure to perform. This could of course be very skewed by my presence. It is rare to have foreigners visiting small towns in Japan. I'm also 6 feet tall and 200 lbs so to them I was huge.

Maybe someone else who has more experience can fill in the blanks?
