"Watered down?" Since when? Are you familiar with the Kármán Line? Not to mention any alternative definitions of the lower boundary of space are well below 200km (above sea level).
I think you're just imposing your own personal opinion onto what qualifies as "space," as opposed to what the aeronautics/astronautics societies have established as "space."
