Bzzt wrong. I can say "Slashdot is only for dummies" all I want. I cannot put out a book "for dummies". I could say "more or less" to hell and highwater if I wanted to in my normal speech.
The current site qualifies as parody. However the original site which has been changed was an informational site, therefore your analogy is invalid. If ABC had sued FOX for "Who want's to marry a millionaire" that would be a similar case which is why it was called "multimillionaire" to prevent such problems.
Microsoft must be immediately dissolved, and it's assets sold at auction.
First off, this is the right I do NOT want the government to have. If they got away with this with Microsoft, believe you me every time they had a problem with a company, this precedent would allow them to do just that.
All source code for all applications they have ever written should be placed under GPL, and the copyrights assigned to Richard Stallman.
Why the GPL? Why Stallman? What do either have to do with this? Besides the fact that this case is about win9x and Internet Explorer ONLY, if they were to take the source code it should be public domain and nothing else. Why should RMS get some kind of gift from the government? If anyone were to get a copyright from it it would be the companies that actually deal with Microsoft and were so harmed by them (i.e. IBM, Sun, Apple etc..). But you wouldn't want this because they are big, bad, proprietary companies aren't they?
The microsoft.com domain should be assigned to the EFF, with them directed by court order to maintain a web site at that address containing all the relevant court documents for all time.
Once again, why? Just because the EFF is "fighting for the little guy" does NOT make them some higher moral entity. I respect the EFF and much of their work, but Why should they get anything out of this (see above).
All other domains with Microsoft in their title should be required to change their names. It is acceptable that they still have "ms", such as MSNBC, but only if they find a title where the MS means something else.
So the name Microsoft will be completely obliterated? What will that accomplish?
What do you think will happen to the companies that rely on MS products if MS disappears one day? Do you think that they will suddenly give up and start using Linux? Is that really what you want? Not me. Sorry the last thing I want to do is retrain several thousand users (and I work for a small company) to use their 7337 Linux desktops. We have Linux servers on sites. We have MS servers, we have sun, we have SCO. The desktops are all MS however. We couldn't afford to have to completely start over from scratch, and neither could any of our customers. Of course your proposal doesn't take that into account does it? Screw big business (and small/medium business too) as long as Microsoft and it's name is completely obliterated from the planet.
Something needs to be done, but the ways you describe are the obvious result of extreme zealotry and are insane.
Call me a Microsoft shill but I am looking out for my and many other small/medium business owners out there, not to mention the end user. Completely ending all things MS will hurt a very large consumer and economic base in this country.
No you misunderstand, I thought that the MS story was valid in the first place. My point is if that if they are going to post stories about security flaws I want to see all the stories not just ones that make Linux look good. And now that I have posted the exact same thing twice I hope I get a -1 for redundant.
If they ignored every website hacking then it wouldn't matter. However, In light of the recent storie(s) about the IIS "backdoor" this story should have gotten just as much front-page attention. It only goes to show that this site is ultimately biased. Fine, I don't care but I want to hear about ALL security problems on the front page, or none of them. Zealotry becomes noone.
This is definitely a Bad Thing. If we look back several months to the Pokemon lawsuit where one of the "bad" lawyers got taken off the case for a similar reason. Remember how we all cheered? Well... There's that whole double-edged sword thing cropping up again. Since Scholastic publishes educational magazines (Electronic Learning is a big one) and educational software, hopefully the relationship will be far enough from the film industry to keep Garbus in the ring.
For people who can't afford the random breakage that crops up with 2.3.x on their production machines, it's pretty important for bugs to continue to be fixed in the 2.2 series
That's funny, last time I checked/. I got the impression that Linux out of the box had 0 downtime. Guess I misread all those posts.
-Marc
P.S. this is not a rant at you, but directed towards the misinformed zealots who seem to feel that Linux can do know wrong, and don't seem to understand that there is still work to be done.
Why would you download MP3's of dubious quality when you can rip your own? That doesn't make ANY sense. And don't tell me you don't have a cdrom drive. Not to mention the fact that most of the MP3's on Napster are usually under the 150kbps range and sound like crap. But hey to each his own I guess.
Sure, I was grandstanding - someone wanted to point out that I'm weird, and I wholeheartedly agree. Do you have nothing better to do than flame me over it?
Firstly, my message wasn't a flame and if it came off as such I am sorry. However, you somehow had the cojones to compare the Black Civil Rights Movement to Free (as in speech) Software which is about as ridiculous as comparing Stallman to Stalin.
. I don't think I'd be spending all day answering flames if I were as complacent as the rest of ya.
Once again you seem to be missing my point here. Posting on/., although interesting and informative at times, is not "activism". It is not "striking out at the Corporate Scum" It is soapboxing in a generally Pro Free Software forum.
This whole thing, to me, was supposed to be a quick defense of RMS - I never thought I'd spend all day defending myself instead
Well then don't make inflammatory comments (see above).
(/., btw, is hardly a media site as in 'a site which reports news.' it is, to me, a sounding board for reactions to new or opinions. also, your assertion that all corporations and all media are equal, or, your assertion that i imply that all corporations or media are equally bad, is false and baseless.
It would be a site which reported news if it only mirrored other sites. However,
1. It has editors who choose what stories get posted.
2. It does not post the original article but usually an opinion on the article.
Note, this is not a bad thing it is what I look for on this site.
But I do realize that there is a bias.
That's OK. I can deal with it. However you do imply that television and radio is inherently worse than the Net. I wouldn't say that I totally disagree, but if you are intelligent and proactive about the things you hear and see noone will be able to brainwash you. Are you so afraid that big bad Dan Rather is going to convince you that Elian should be sent back to Cuba, and that you should smoke Camels, drink Bud and buy Nike?
Love,
-Marc
p.s. You shouldn't stick your tongue out so much your face will freeze that way.:P
I don't own a television. I don't listen to the radio. I throw away mail advertisements unopened.
And yet here you are posting to SlashDot. What, do you think that coming here you are avoiding the mass media? Have you forgotten that/. is owned by a corporation? If you are so anti-media why are you even online?
You know it's great when we can pat ourselves on the back thinking that we are so special because we are bucking the party line so much, yet in reality you are just as complacent as the rest of us.
Forget the fact that there are millions of people suffering over absolute bullshit
If you think for one iota of a second that the free software movement has any bearing or relationship to true suffering in this world then you have have your head really far up your ass.
Even if it didn't if the story got moderated up that would mean people either
1. Didn't see it the first time (so redundancy is meaningless) or
2.Were interested enough in a story to want ot read more and post more about it. Not bad things in my opinion.
B) Put only INTERESTING stories up
Once again moderation could show what the majority community feels is interesting. True it may not help submissions but it may give the editors a feel for the current mood of their audience.
If you payed attention and didn't spend all your time with your incredibly weak attempts at flamebait you would notice that some people post at +2 by default. This is after they have reached a certain level of karma.
Of course you are too busy trolling for Goatse.cx and rather immature name calling to notice such things aren't you?
It's very interesting that you claim it is not a rebuttal when it is posted in response to this post.
If this was a new topic it should have been posted as such, but obviously you were referring to what the parent had said about Metallica possibly being in the right.
"With that kind of stretching of words, you could as well call my comments bananas or power convertors."
Interesting use of hyperbole here, claiming that somehow I have taken your comments out of context, (interesting use of "could" here as opposed to the more correct "may" or "might" but hey, I'm no pedant) when in reality you are refusing to acknowledge that fact that you posted a weak, mindless comment and, when called on it, resorted to childish name calling.
I wish that everybody was as nice as you and stop fucking calling people "pirates" as if they had killed and raped and stolen whereas they have just moved a few electrons around.
And anyway, their music is crap for retarded acneic teenagers.
You have shown quite conclusively that you are one of the retarded acneic teenagers that you seem to despise so much. I would recommend that you back up for a second, reread your post, take a deep breath, and chant "It's only Slashdot, It's only Slashdot". Most people who have passed their retarded acneic teenage years can find more constructive ways to counter an argument besides poorly thought out sarcasm and name calling.
Intel is proud to announce it's newest line of processors, created to combine the speed of AMD with the iMac style of computer, The MD 20/20/86. The MD will come in grape, banana and fruit punch.
Warning! Use of these processors in multiple cpu combinations, especially if flavors are mixed may cause your computer to be blurry-eyed, slow, late-rising and generally hungover in the morning.
Why would you want to? I get the feeling that in order to get an early post you just put down whatever came to mind. Nothing personal but come on......

The following section is being provided to remind you of what you posted. It is not verbatim.
The argument
Metallica has a right to complain.
Your rebuttal
No because they spend their money on on drugs and hookers.
New Argument
You have unjustly accused them.
Your rebuttal

Now with regards to
