Right, just like george carlin says, we'll all be better off once we've all had babies with different races such that everyone's one color... we'll all be better off once we've all had babies with different sexes such that everyone's the same sex.. Er wait.

Besides I'd wager that over half of the "females" on the net might be male.
You're really going out on a limb there with that wager! You should join #girls and see, there really are quite a lot of real women on the net! :-)

The child is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen :-)

Not sure why i'm sharing this.. just so darn proud of my nephew, and wanted to agree with you that yes, I think people generally assume everyone they meet online is a white male.

...You don't think that microsoft noticed the number of signups and immediate cancellations and realized that indeed, people *were* taking advantage of their offer? That's not even a teensy tiny possibility in your eye?

I believe the existence of two completely different contracts in the beginning proves that microsoft was well aware of the details and their consequences, but they had faith that people wouldn't abuse it (silly people). All they ever had to do was say "offer void in california and oregon", or make it a rebate.

I agree that such violence so early in the movie could potentially turn off a large portion of the audience from what it really meant. I think there are a lot of things that movie makers can do too much of, too early, that turns people off of movies - "gross" things come to mind.

One movie that comes to mind that had a lot of violence but managed to portray it in a meaningful way was Braveheart. As for a movie that had too much of something that turned me off of it - how about Beloved. There were several scenes that just didn't help the movie along, like watching how beloved ate so closely, yum yum.

If Office and IE aren't considered normal windows applications, then what are??

Here's what I think people mean when they talk about an example of a standard UI:

    • Generally, every window you have open in has a menubar at the top
    • "File" is always the first dropdown, and it's always on the left of the menubar.
    • "Help" is always the last dropdown menu, and it's always the rightmost menu on the bar.
    • Commands such as Cut/Copy/Paste are always on Edit, which is next to File
    • etc..

Office2k, IE and Explorer all have all of the above, and it makes it much easier for everybody's grandparents to use computers if that's true.

I've worked with amazon's customer support on an email basis and I was extremely impressed.. a few years ago I used amazon with one email address, and then later I forgot about that account and signed up with a new one. I recently remembered the old account and emailed them asking them if it was possible to merge the two accounts.. They took care of it within a week. The email I received was from an individual person who was very nice, I wish i'd had a way of mailing their manager and telling them how impressed I was.

But you don't go from user-friendly-large-site to evil-monopolistic-microsoft-type-company overnight. Along with that, there's no black and white in the industry, just many shades of gray..

I think a letter writing campaign (it's sooo much easier when it's email :-) would be more effective in announcing to amazon that we think they're being really dumb. I think they are concerned enough about their image with the techie crowd that they *might* listen.
