  1. Re:I wonder... on Astronauts Pull Off Risky Spacewalk · · Score: 1

Well, my first thought would be some sort of leftover Cold War thing. Push our accomplishments while ignoring theirs.

Second thought would be that it's just this particular mission that's getting a lot of attention. Since the last one ended in such tragedy, everybody is holding their breath. So anything that doesn't end in death, destruction, and ebay auctions of body parts from space is a good thing.

On the other hand, anything shuttle-related is easy news. It's in space, it's cool, and again, if it doesn't blow up, it's an easy happy piece.

But yeah, the shuttle-centric phenomenon is pretty common. Remember when China sent up their first guy? Or was it Japan? India? See? Some nation went into space for the first time, and I don't even remember who. Or when.

First, as many slashdotters as possible get jobs at the big telcos. Then, we allow the big telcos to get the legislation passed that allows for a tiered internet. However, when it comes time to program the tiered internet, all the slashdotters that previousely got the jobs at the telcos can volunteer to do that work. Then, they'll program it so nothing actually happens. Turn in a big script that just doodles smilies or something. Then, since the telcos have won, they'll stop trying, but we'll still have an internet where the tubes ain't broke! Genius!

The other problem is that there is a LOT of empty space at the bottom of every slashdot page. But beyond that, I love IE7. It rocks. 1) Why do they bother calling it "reverse osmosis?" From a quick review of high school biology, I have come to realize "reverse osmosis" really means "pumping through a filter."

    2) I saw this other method in Discover that I really liked. Basically, it proposes using deep water and methane to flash-freeze water. All you need to do is to pump methane into water of the right depth, and it instantly freezes into that flammable ice mining rigs love to dig up and play with, without like, refrigerating it. Anyways, as it freezes, all the salt gets pushed out and it floats to the top, so all you have to do is melt the ice and reuse the methane. It appealed to the recycler in me, and it seems to me some tubes and plumbing would be easier than nanotubes, eh?
