All I use Altavista for is Babelfish now, other than that, I always use Google to search for anything of importance. None of the other search engines ever really had a chance in my mind...
How about bringing back Master of Magic or X-Com with updated graphics? There are so many *other* games I would rather see get remade. I could care less about either of the two game smentioned in the articles...
Couldn't this potentially lead to something even more nasty (if it ever comes to fruition), like M$ coming in and wiping out pirated copies of their OS? XP is already a step in the nasty direction, but that would just be completely insane...
I've read in PCComputing that the Dreamcast Internet browser looks like crap. Bad res, hard to use, etc. And I apologize for referencing a ZDNet source. =]
I thought that the PS2 (as is) was supposed to be capable of handling anything Micro$oft would be creating. The Emotion Engine would slaughter the competition, hands down, and I wouldn't have to worry about what choice to make. Now they're going to throw a modem and a HD in there (which I am assuming will increase the already outrageous $300+ cost). The modem I understand, but a HD? Why? Developers for the Japanese PS2 must not have had a HD in mind, and I doubt the American developers did/do either. What the hell does this do to the games already in development? And why even put a HD in a system with these performance numbers, I would think it would just lead to *lower* performance. BAH!
These are the games I was referring to in my earlier post. They are some of the most painful games ever created, and a good portion of my *exercise* time as a kid. =]
Some of the first Nintendo Olympics style games were extremely hard on the hands. Especially if you intenionally used that "pad" thing (I con't remember the name...) where you were supposed to actually run and jump on it. I always just used my arms. =]
I had the joystick for Nintendo, so I tore my palm skin off a couple of times playing games like that.
Does anyone know if Kryotech will attempt a 1.5GHz machine or something with these? I would assume you woule be looking at about $4000 for whatever they put together...
Last time I checked you couldn't scratch a MP3 player and it would stop working, like a CD. It will also *never* skip like my portable CD player does. It also holds *whatever* songs I want, in whatever order. I don't have time to burn homemade music CD's, when I could spend 1/2 of the time downloading the info to the MP3 player. And if you have a Nomad, you can listen to the radio, or use the Voice option. Need I go on?
Having this amount of space for music is ludicrous, you would never listen to all of it...that would be like giving me a 100GB harddrive at home. I could put everything I own on there and would still have over 80% of it free, and I wouldn't use most of the shit anyway.
So is Linux, so Slashdotters are going to be, for the most part, one-sided on this issue. I myself have always bought Intel chips, but my next box may have an Athlon because one: they're cheaper, and two: they're pretty damned impressive when comparing them to comparable Intel chip performance.
I highly doubt the X-Box will be cheaper than the PS2 by the time it is released. The X-Box is nothing more than rumors for now, while the PS2 will be in Japan in a month. Even if it is cheaper from the start, Sony will be able to drop the PS2 price and still have the advantage.
Quake III crashed before I even started the game. It was some time during the player selection screen. Needless to say, I was pissed. I've been playing UT since...
I have to agree with your last statement, although you meant it to be funny =]. How will updates to the OS on this thing happen? I don't know of any consoles (N64, PS, hell, even Atari) never get such upgrades, but M$'s track record proves they are willing to release buggy OS's that require some upgrades.
And the "up to 1Ghtz" statement disturbs me. Does this mean that M$ might consider offering the X-Box at different power levels? A different price for a different processor, etc, that sort of thing. I don't think M$ is looking at this the same way that Sony and Nintendo are, and I think that might be their downfall.
of the fact that Intel has a 1.5Ghtz chip, they won't be releasing it for quite awhile (even if this chip will run once the OS loads). Why doesn't AMD give Intel it's death blow and drop the 1 Ghtz Athlon now? Quit with this 33-50Mhtz jump crap and SHOW ME THE GHTZ!!! =]
Sorry, maybe I've got processor envy, my 400A Celeron doesn't measure up anymore...
This topic has seemingly moved to the topic of FPS as murder simulations, so I feel I have to give my $0.02. In my opinion, only those people that don't have the brains to realize that video games are just that, games, should never have access to a gun the first place. I don't know about the rest of you, but if my FPS experience were to become real, I would die rather quickly, because I'm not the type to run and hide (that's what health is for!). I'd rather sit there and take the spray of bullets and be left at 1 Health and still get the frag, instead of taking off and getting shot in the back. I wouldn't be standing after the first bullet hit in real life. I also have a hard time equating mouse/keyboard or joystick use to the use of a weapon (crowbar, gun, whatever). Wouldn't a true simulation let me use my "Microsoft Force Feedback Crowbar 2000" controller? Bah, this whole topic stinks of ignorance on non-gamer's part...
I have to agree with you, give an honest opinion on something and you're labelled "troll" or "flamebait." I'm glad I could care less about my own karma, because just getting my ideas out is more important.
Some guy already did that, the link was at HardOCP awhile back (not sure where it is now though). It was pretty cool, especially the fact that he was asking to be sent more, because he had run out...and the color scheme left, uh, something to be desired. =]
You've obviously never worked in Tech Support, helped a family member install software, or tried to explain to someone how a computer works. 90% of people (not necessarily Americans) don't know jack about computers, 5% think they know everything about computers, and the other 5% eventually find their way to Slashdot.

Col. was good, but I'll take Civ. anyday (mmmmm Civ III). I've only heard great tales of Pirates!, wish I owned it way back when.

Wasn't it considered "industrial terrorism" before, just never given that label?

The Juice is still loose!

I would expect it to actually work about 6 months after those commercials. =]

Why do they have to crash it at all? I read the article, but I don't recall seeing anything about there being a *need* to crash it...

As long as it will still fit into a microwave, I could see this as being a great house cat.

If I knew how, I'd create a LEGO BFG for Quake III or UT. Now that's fragalicious!
