Oh for gods sake. They were getting gouged by the Geek Squad. It's an alliterative headline, a grand tradition of hundreds of years. This is just righteous touchiness, and no one is going to say "gosh, anyone who says they're a geek can't be trusted, some guy on the news said they'll rip me off". Honestly, pick your battles.
That's nice, but no one has completely broken AACS either, they've just dragged out some individual keys. On other fronts, MagicGate still isn't broken either, and many of the various music players still haven't had their signing mechanism cracked either. Granted it's theoretically impossible to completely hide all the keys, but it seems to be serving its purpose of making it highly inconvenient.
Pardon, usually it's a CD and not a DVD. Seems to work with either on my player though -- it just looks for the magic file, regardless of what you stick in it. Most people with computers have CD burners, even my laptop burns CDs.
Typically you download it and burn a DVD (a regular non-HD one) with a standard filesystem and a magic filename (like FIRMWARE.DAT or whatever) in the root directory, then stick the DVD in the drive. If you don't have a burner, you have them mail the disc to you.
I think if you're a stage magician, you've heard of James Randi. As for scientists, "ought to know", perhaps -- he's a leading expert in controlled testing of subjects that attempt to actively sabotage the process. But "probably know", that's not a given. Science is a big field, and he's not exactly published in scientific journals.
I prefer an amp that doesn't clip at all. Then it doesn't matter whether it's a tube or a transistor. I'll add my own clipping and thermal noise for effect, thanks.

Dinosaur Spokesman: We had a good what, hundred, two hundred million year run? How long you human critters been around? Two mil? Odds on making it to three?
Remember when Judge Jackson told a reporter what he thought of Microsoft coming into his court with blatant lies and fake demonstrations. His ruling was overturned because of his *bias*.
Judge Jackson broke the three cardinal rules of being a judge:
1. You do not talk to the press. 2. You DO NOT talk to the press. 3. YOU DO NOT TALK TO THE PRESS.
NC-17 is the killer of theater releases. However, it seems that "unrated version" DVD's have become a pretty widespread norm. The MPAA is losing its grip on the DVD market, and good riddance.
The destruction of a city's books cannot destroy the total advance of science in a culture that values it. The simple reason for this is that the important books tended to be copied. Copyright law wasn't quite so strict back then;)
The caliphate was pretty much gone by the 13th century: ruined by corruption, internal conflict, and the aftermath of the crusades -- not so much ruin wrought by the European invaders, but by the militant Turks that filled in the power vacuum when the Europeans left. In the end, Persia was probably more of a civilizing influence on the Mongols.
Truly rigorous scientific sources you have there. Pillars of anthropology and historical research, all.
This article brings all the fucking kooks, jibbering and screaming bloody invective against the folks in the "enemy tribe". My enemies list should be quadrupling, but I'll grant that even the greatest fucktards here might have the occasional technical insight, so I hold off. Not you though, buddy, but you're not prolific enough to bother plonking.
This is the best article I've seen linked from slashdot in ages, possibly ever. Shame that I knew in advance that the comments wouldn't begin to measure up.
> Jews and Judaism have never crusaded against anyone or instituted any forced conversions ever.
I think the Canaanites might beg to differ. But I guess back then, everybody really was doing that sort of thing, and I'll grant that the Jews have probably gone the longest without doing any of that crap, so kudos for that.
Oh please, stop with the faux sense of outrage that someone might accurately describe a video game for the murder simulator it is.
Hi Jack Thompson, nice to see you on slashdot!
Seriously. This is what this game is. You kill...almost indiscriminately. That is the name of the game. Hell, this is probably why I'm going to buy it.
Er, um... maybe. Oh wait. Hi Jack Thompson, nice to see you on slashdot!
Microsoft is in no way being short-sighted by locking down the XBox. Game licenses are what make them money, XBMC and homebrew doesn't. You may not agree with their decision, but it doesn't make them stupid for it.
It'd be nice if they let people freely mod the things once it was fully EOL'd in a few years, but that isn't really germane to the product strategy.
I owned an Amiga. And a C64 before that. And even, *shudder* a VIC-20 before that. Booting off the game media still doesn't make it "optimized for games", and it's simply not realistic these days except when the hardware is completely standardized -- which is what consoles are all about.
But the GP is talking nonsense. Shell out five grand for a XPS or Blackbird and you're buying a gaming PC, full stop. The Amiga was no more "optimized for games" than a Mac (to get back on topic)

Birds eat bugs. But I guess we can just pour on more DDT to make up for their being gone.
And most of the people in these countries would prefer that rich white people stopped poisoning their environment.

Firmware is signed.

You're a really uptight bastard, aren't you?
I feel sorry for people who derive personal validation from the control scheme they use in their games.

Catholic dogma holds the transubstantiation to be literal. By and large, Protestantism does not. So you're both right.
> Many good scientific have been religious in some form ot believe in god: Newton, Einstein, Bohr, etc.
Newton also believed in alchemy. Newton was a freaky little nut.
Einstein was a pantheist, and specifically rejected the idea of an anthropomorphic god that intervenes directly in the universe.
No idea about Bohr.
