    So why bother with .NET?

    Simplicity. I hate MS to my very core, but I can whip up apps in C#.NET faster than I can in Java. 99% of the time I don't care about portability. I just care about getting things done on time. Of course, then there's the other times when I have to use MFC for various reasons, and that pretty much cancels out any gains I got from using C#.NET...

    1) Yahoo, 2) msn and 3) Google. Maybe all the people who visit the former two do so for the news, or the groups, or the mail, but I'm not sure your hypothesis is automatically valid.

    That's perfectly valid, and that's exactly what I do. I use Yahoo exclusively for mail, groups, news, etc.. and I use Google exclusively for search and maps and maybe a few other things.
