  1. Re:Hogwash... on BPI Requests ISPs Suspend Suspected Filesharers · · Score: 1

I know people who live without money, housing, toilets, and most of the time, food. They're called "homeless" where I come from because of their lack of a reliable place to live. I don't think that they were what the original poster was referring to, though. There will always be exceptions to the rule. If my DSL line didn't conveniently require me to have a telephone I would live without one as well. But the fact is, as more people come to rely on this technology to run their daily lives (shop, find jobs, find lovers and friends, find housing, etc.), the threat of having it revoked is a major concern. Of course, we could all go back to our agrarian roots and start our own farms because none of the trappings of the modern world are really "required" for our survival, and may in fact be hindering our lives more than helping. But, come on, let's face reality here... You want to take my net access from me? You can have it when you pry it from my cold, dead hands...

  2. Welcome to AOL... You've Got Child Porn! on ISPs to Create Database to Combat Child Porn · · Score: 1

Nothing like mentioning child porn to grease the wheels of a /. discussion.

    From TFA:
Plans call for the missing children's center to collect known child-porn images and create a unique mathematical signature for each one based on a common formula. Each participating company would scan its users' images for matches.

Forget all these arguments about child porn and whether it helps and blah blah blah. It's not an issue that's going to go away any time soon. What really frightens me about this is that they're not only using this database to tag child porn they've found, but to look for new child porn according to a (surely infallible) mathematical automation process... Exactly what kind of digital signature does child porn have? Will this be able to differentiate between a naked 18 year old and a naked 12 year old? Will it be able to tell the difference between real child porn and pictures of my 10 month old naked in the tub that I send to his grandma? This is like the post office opening your mail, photocopying it, and sending it along to the FBI for archiving... These guys sure have their work cut out for them...

  3. Re:What they need. on Teen Sues MySpace Over Sexual Assault · · Score: 1

I agree with what you're saying here. Ultimately, the responsibility for a minor's actions lie with the parents. But as you have stated, it's impossible to know everything your kid is doing all of the time. Personally, I was using chat boards when I was about 12 or 13. If you think MySpace is a scary place, you should meet some of the people I met over the years.

Fourteen isn't quite as young as you may think. I was in a very active sexual relationship by that time of my life, and was always on the hunt for more. I won't say that kids of that age aren't naive at all, but they're not as dumb as the media often portrays them. My parents sure as hell didn't know that I was going to meet up with strangers (hopefully a hot chick) that I had met online, but they had instilled enough sense in me to know that you should only do so in a very public place with a lot of exits.

What this article really says to me is... stupid girl meets evil boy, runs home crying to mommy and daddy, who get dollar signs in their eyes... i'm no great fan of myspace myself, but this is just another superfluous litigation to choke up our legal system. This will probably end up being another McDonald's style "Warning: Coffee is a HOT drink, stupid."

  4. well, duh... on GTAIV to use Engine from Table Tennis · · Score: 1

I was waiting for this news to break. I figured it was coming sooner or later. I haven't seen the table tennis game, but from what I've heard it's pretty cool. But, come on, look at Rockstar's game releases. Did you really think they were designing a game engine for the 360 just to make a table tennis game?

So if this passed, you're saying all of my podcasts go bye bye? Well, at least the ones playing copyrighted music... And how does a podcast differ from a radio broadcast, exactly? I can record a radio show with no problems, but if it comes in via a podcast it's a big bad no no. I mean, obviously, people recording music off the radio has just KILLED the music industry...

  7. uh oh spaghetti-o's on Most Web Users Unable to Spot Spyware · · Score: 1

    Dear SiteAdvisor,

I recently took your online spyware quiz and was very shocked. While I consider myself a safe and secure web user I only scored a 3 out of 8 on the quiz. This was like waking up with a hangover, only to find holes in your condoms. My mind is now reeling at the thought of all of the viruses and spyware that my machine might be harboring. I've been to several sites that look similar or offer similar services as the ones in your quiz. I'd like to protect myself as soon as possible from this threat, and hopefully rid myself of any of these dangerous infections before they wreak havoc on my precious data. After taking the quiz, I quickly went to your downloads page in hopes of downloading this software. However, while I have used Firefox extensively, I mostly run Camino and Safari. Are there plans in the works to create a version of SiteAdvisor for these browsers? Can you suggest any other software that I can use until such time as a SiteAdvisor plugin for these browsers comes out? Please help me to stamp out this scourge of spyware that is threatening to destroy my machine... before it's too late!

    Sincerely,

    Sleepless from Spyware

  9. Tin Foil Hat Warning on Database Business Problems at Oracle? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I think it was a Playboy interview with Ellison in which he mentioned that he was all for a national ID system. I couldn't help but think then that he was for it because a) he is uber-rich so privacy concerns don't bother him, and b) it would create HUGE gov't contracts for high end database firms... like his. Now, there are plans to create a nationwide database system for tracking IDs, and Ellison is saying their business is going to expand in the next few years... maybe I'm just grasping at straws here, but the coincidences frightening.

  10. Re:Fine line between MUD and MMOG? on Dungeons and Dragons Online Impressions · · Score: 3, Interesting

I don't know if this is exactly in line with your ideas, but I think it's close... http://www.paranoia-live.net/news.php Some gamers who play paranoia developed a java-based application that allows people to meet virtually for table top games. The app allows for chatting and has all kinds of built in features geared towards the game. It's not table top, and it's not a MUD/MMOG. I think it fills a nice place in the middle... It still requires all the imagination of table top, just not the space (and you don't have to share your junk food and soda with anyone!).
